What Is Preppy Girl Aesthetic?

woman enjoying sight seeing - Preppy Girl Aesthetic

The preppy aesthetic derives its name from the “prep schools” that educated the children of the wealthy. As many of these elite institutions were modeled after traditional English schools, their uniforms featured a classic, tailored style with a distinct, old-money air. The term “preppy” emerged in the 1950s when kids from affluent families began to wear their neatly pressed school clothes to social gatherings instead of ditching them after graduation. The look became a symbol of the American upper class, and its popularity has never waned.  Today, the aesthetic conjures images of Ivy League alumni and features a polished, collegiate style that is classic and sophisticated.

The Origins of the Preppy Style

The preppy style emerged in the 1920s when wealthy families sent their children to private schools. These academic institutions adapted uniforms inspired by the traditional English dress style. Students continued wearing their preppy clothes even after graduating.

Fast-forward to the 1950s, when the preppy style symbolized the American lifestyle, status, and success. This was also when preppy-style clothing brands Tommy Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren, and Brooks Brothers came into play.

The preppy style took off in the 1980s when  The Official Preppy Handbook was published. It’s a tongue-in-cheek guide to prep schools and how certain groups should dress, and it sold more than a million copies.

Remember popping your collar in the ’80s? All the cool kids did it, not just those in Ivy League schools.

For a closer look at preppy style through the years, look at Jackie Kennedy, Brooke Shields, Princess Di, Katie Holmes, and Reese Witherspoon.

What Preppy Style Says About a Person

Preppy style can carry a stereotype of “better than you,” “from old money,” or “entitled.” However, those are just stereotypes. Preppy style can say you are confident in your clothing choices. You don’t care much about trends. You stick with what works for you: classic preppy pieces. Preppy style says you take pride in your appearance and look neat.

Fashion Lessons From The Official Preppy Handbook

woman in a forest - Preppy Girl Aesthetic

1. Everything Matches: The Preppy Girl Aesthetic’s Color Coordination Obsession

Nothing says “Preppy Girl” like a perfectly color-coordinated outfit. As The Official Preppy Handbook notes, “Everything matches – some Preppies go as far as to change their watchbands every day.” That is so true. The only change now is that Apple makes that watch, and you have to choose which Hermes band you’ll wear from one day to the next. In 1980, wearing a “computer” on your wrist wasn’t exactly a “thing.” What on earth would old-school preps say about Twitter and Instagram? Or Snapchat even? I digress.

2. Preppy Style is Classic and Timeless

“Preppy clothes are built to last since they won’t go out of style.” Two words – Ralph Lauren. Need I say more? I have sweaters that are 30 years old that have been handed down to me by my mother. Preppy clothes are eternal. Buy quality, not quantity – a lesson that never goes out of style.

3. Prints, Colors, and Patterns Galore

“Primary colors and brilliant pastels are worn indiscriminately by men and women alike, in preposterous combinations.” And what’s wrong with that? Absolutely nothing! “Preps love prints- their particular favorite prints.” Need I mention J. Crew’s love for critter pants? Yeah, I am still going after 35 years and counting. Who doesn’t love a whale, sailboat, or lobster embroidered on fabrics? Wardrobe staple!

4. Monograms Are a Preppy Girl Aesthetic Closet Staple

“Most preppies are so proud of their monogram that they put them on virtually everything in sight.” I need to mention only one company here – LL Bean. Boat bags with monograms are every preppie’s bag of choice. It's time for me to admit I have a dozen of them. Yes, I have a problem.

5. Looking Like Mom Is the Goal of Preppy Style

“There is one sartorial goal for Preppy women: to look like Mummy.” Well, this is more personal and for each person's own. But, it is 100% true for me. Mum knows best and always has. Every day, I aspire to be as fabulous as she was/is.

6. Dressed Up and Ready to Go

“Get completely dressed for a party and then take off one piece of jewelry.” This is just a brilliant tip, no matter the date or time. Oh, Preppy Handbook, what did I ever do without you?

7. Official Preppy Handbook Closet Essentials

“Sperry Top-Siders. They have been in Prep closets since sailing lessons started in sixth grade.” It says everything, and yes, Sperry Top-Siders remain a closet essential. “Diane von Furstenberg Wrap Dress. Never mind that the print gives it away as four years old. Flattering on all body types, wearable for work or dress-up, comfortable- it’s practically perfect.” And 35 years later – it’s still the most flattering dress in all the land. “Pearls. Everyone has them, and they’re usually real (grandmothers). A single strand, of a modest length, with a simple clasp.”

I went to a college where we never removed our pearls – even worked out in them. Still, my most prized possession is the jewelry box (although worn much less in London these days). “Coach Bag. Suitable materials, good workmanship, classic design. Navy blue or winter is the best color; it lasts for years.” You know I love this brand – hell, I designed a bag for them. Ahem. The FFG Coach bag. “The camel’s hair coat is the quintessential Prep winter coat for a woman.” If you don’t own a camel hair coat…., you just need one. Now. What are you waiting for? Ralph Lauren’s waiting to help.

Go. “The Virtues of Pink and Green. Wearing pink and green  is the surest and quickest way to group identification within the Prep set.” Pink and green are fashion combinations that the Prep set defined, and the rest of the world has adopted them. It’s not the most straightforward combination, but it is always worth a try, as the style points are endless. “In casual wear, it is considered very spirited, very fun-loving to wear one offbeat, loud item – usually the pants.”

It’s 2024, and fashion favors the bold and their fabulous printed wide-leg or palazzo pants! Now, consider yourselves well versed in modern prepped, influenced by the folks that started it all… officially!

Critical Elements of the Modern Preppy Girl Wardrobe

woman near a sea - Preppy Girl Aesthetic

Silhouettes: Preppy Aesthetic Structure and Design

The preppy aesthetic is marked by its tailored and structured silhouettes. Outfits feature sharp, clean lines with a polished look. While layers are shared, each piece is well-coordinated and complements the others for an effortless vibe.

Patterns: Classic Preppy Aesthetic Prints and Designs

Argyle

Regarding the preppy style, knitwear with argyle patterns often takes center stage. This classic can be worn in dresses and skirts and is primarily seen in knitted vests and pullover sweaters.

Checkered

The checkered pattern is a classic worn on blazers, shirts, vests, skirts, and dresses. Pairing this pattern with bolds or solids also makes it easy to create a statement style.

Plaids

A popular pattern primarily seen in women’s pleated skirts and matching blazers, plaids are timeless and complement casual outfits and formal, dressed-up styles. Just like the checkered pattern, plaids pair well with solids.

Colors: Preppy Aesthetic Color Palettes

The classic preppy style incorporates primary colors like black, navy, nude, beige, and white. However, a more modern take on the preppy style can often include various pastels. It is surprisingly versatile because you can use any color palette and let the pattern and style do the talking.

Fabrics and Materials: Preppy Aesthetic Textiles

Tweed

This is the best material for creating that textured, luxurious, effortless look. You can get herringbone, tartan check, or solid weave tweed and exude glamor and richness. A tweed jacket is a must-have for preppy style.

Knits

Knits give off a professional look, especially when the collars of your shirt are visible on the neck. You can use your cashmere crewneck or chunky V-neck varsity sweaters to achieve that preppy style and layer them with plain blouses or dresses.

Cotton

Cotton is a light and comfortable material often used for everyday clothing. It is also easy to care for and comes in various colors and patterns, making it a popular choice for preppy clothing.

Silk

Silk is a soft and light material that gives clothes an elegant and sophisticated appearance. It is often used for blouses, dresses, and scarves and is particularly valued for its softness and shine.

Linen

Linen is a light material often used for summer clothing. It is also easy to care for and comes in various colors and textures.

Cashmere

Cashmere is a soft and luxurious material often used for sweaters and cardigans. It is also durable and hard-wearing, making it a popular choice for high-quality clothing.

Leather

Leather is a durable and stylish material often used for shoes, handbags, and jackets. It comes in various colors and textures, making it a versatile choice for preppy accessories.

Wool

Wool is a warm, durable material often used for winter coats and jackets. It is also easy to care for and comes in various colors and textures.

Many of these may already be in your everyday wardrobe. Pair them together for outfits with a preppy aesthetic.

Must-Have Preppy Aesthetic Clothing

Blazers

Blazers are the ultimate symbol of the preppy style, especially if they are made from flannel, tweed, or wool. Opt for a double-breasted and oversized blazer, and consider adding an oversized belt or a link belt to cinch it at the waist.

Men can wear a blazer over a button-down polo or short-sleeved collared shirt. Pair it with a knit vest over your collared shirt for that university look.

Bonus points if you have a navy blazer.

Collared Button-Down Shirts

A plain white button-down shirt (or oxford shirt) is necessary to perfect the preppy style. A crisp button-down shirt automatically gives your OOTD instant class and sophistication.

Investing in a plain shirt is a great idea for both men and women since it can be the foundation for any outfit. Pair it with trousers, short skirts, or even long maxi skirts. It goes with anything and everything and is very easy to layer with other clothing.

Investing in other primary colors like black, gray, and navy blue is also a good idea, as you can easily mix and match them with your khakis and blazers.

Cable-Knit Sweater

Stay cozy, warm, and stylish during the winter with a cable-knit sweater. Cable knit adds just enough detail and texture to boost your preppy look.

Argyle Sweaters

Argyle is a trademark pattern of preppy style. The easiest way to create preppy outfits is to don an argyle sweater.

Tartan Skirt

Plaid skirts are a must-have for preppy outfits. Pair a tartan skirt with a crisp button-down, blazer, and loafers for the ultimate schoolgirl aesthetic, or pair it with your cable knit sweater and boots for a more conservative nod to the look.

Sweater Vests

Trendy fashionistas have borrowed these from the preppy style for the past few years. If preppy style is your style personality, they will stick with your wardrobe long after the “trend” ends.

Stripe Rugby Polo Shirts

These have been a trend in modern fashion for a moment, but they will also be a classic staple for preppy outfits. Wear them with jeans and sneakers, or take the prep factor up another notch by pairing them with khakis.

Shoes to Wear with Preppy Outfits

  • Classic white sneakers- Low-profile sneakers like Keds and Sperry sneakers work best for this aesthetic

  • Mary Jane shoes

  • Oxford shoes are more masculine, but females who follow an androgynous style may wear them for preppy vibes.

  • Boat shoes- Canvas or leather shoes with a rubber sole for wearing on a boat deck

  • Loafers/ penny loafers

  • Ballet flats

Accessories for Preppy Outfits

Pearls

For women, pearls are the one piece of jewelry that can help you nail the perfect preppy look. Whether it’s a small pair of pearl studs, a single-strand pearl necklace, or a delicate pearl bracelet, pearls are crucial to complete your preppy style.

A Structured Satchel

Accessories are simple and understated. A structured satchel will pair well with the tailored lines of a preppy outfit.

Headbands

Again, simplicity is the way to go. A leather or cloth-wrapped headband can be all the finishing touch you need for your preppy outfit.

21 Preppy Girl Outfit Ideas for Every Occasion

1. Dress Like You’re Going to a Private School

The preppy girl aesthetic is heavily inspired by old money, classic academia, and traditional private schools. So, it only makes sense that the style incorporates many elements reminiscent of these themes. Start with a pleated mini skirt. The school vibe makes it the perfect clothing piece to incorporate into a preppy outfit. You can wear a pleated mini skirt with anything, but it looks perfect paired with oversized sweaters, like the oversized sweater vest in this particular outfit.

2. Oversized Blazer + Knee High Boots Outfit

Blazers are another big staple of preppy fashion. They’re super reminiscent of the old academia style. It’s super cool that more women are now embracing blazers, and it seems like each has put their own chic and modern twist to the piece. An oversized blazer cinched with a belt is just a chef’s kiss; ugh, it’s so good, especially paired with a pair of sheer tights and some knee-high boots.

3. Turtleneck Sweater + Pleated Plaid Skirt

Pairing a turtleneck sweater with a pleated plaid skirt gives you the preppy aesthetic outfit you can wear anywhere. It’s cute, casual and chic.

4. Oversized Sweater Over Jeans Outfit + Loafers

Loafers like the ones in this outfit give off that private school aesthetic if that even makes sense. Tied in with an oversized white collared shirt layered under an oversized sweater, they make for a pretty stylish preppy fit.

5. Cricket Sweater, Shorts, + Red Boots Outfit

Cricket sweaters (is that what you call them? Do you know the sweaters with the stripes around the collar and bottom?) have something about them. As soon as you put one on, you’re suddenly this fun, playful, sophisticated person! They’re so chic! And you can style them up like any other sweater, like in this outfit, with a pair of shorts and a lovely pair of red boots.

6. Cardigan and Plaid Pants Outfit

This outfit is perfect for a preppy aesthetic. Honestly, plaid pants deserve more love. They’re super stylish if you give them a chance, and they look good, especially when paired with chunky boots like Doc Martens.

7. Pleated Skirt + Lettered Sweatshirt Outfit

This is like a preppy outfit's fun and playful version. This lettered sweatshirt and pleated skirt outfit with sneakers has all the elements we’ve learned and love about the preppy aesthetic. It’s an outfit that’s not taking itself too seriously, easy to put together, and so cute and fun.

8. Polo Shirt and Belted Shorts Outfit

A polo shirt tucked into a pair of belted shorts and loafers is a gorgeous combination of pieces that would otherwise be simple.

9. All-Black Cropped Sweater and Pants Outfit

A cropped blazer paired with loose trousers is chic and modern, especially with shoes like Converse sneakers.

10. Collared Shirt Under a Sweater with a Plaid Skirt and Red Boots Outfit

Something about an outfit made up of beige just sounds so appealing, especially when it comes to preppy or academic aesthetics.

11. Oversized Shirt and Sweater with Shorts and Boots

We’ve firmly established that oversized sweaters and sheer tights are a staple for preppy style. Still, we’ve also come to appreciate that there is something so stylish about layering an oversized shirt under a giant sweater with the collar and sleeves peaking through; it’s a combo that chefs kiss so good.

12. Turtleneck Sweater, Mini Skirt + Boots Outfit

This outfit, the tight long-sleeved turtleneck top with the mini-skirt and the boots, is the perfect example of how you can do preppy without having to do too much.

13. Oversized Shirt Under Sweater + Boots Outfit

This is another example of the style many people love, with the white shirt peeking over the sweater. Another way to style it is with some tight-fitting trousers and a pair of knee-high boots. It’s casual, it’s stylish, and it’s preppy vibes.

14. Striped Sweater + Pleated Skirt Outfit

Pleated skirts are versatile pieces of clothing you can never seem tired of and can be styled in a million different ways. When styled with chunky loafers and socks, they add to the private-school girly preppy aesthetic.

15. White Shirt, Plaid Mini Skirt + Socks and Heels Outfit

Socks and heels are a combination I never thought would work together. But I guess it’s a combo that just needed the right moment. You just have to have fun with these trends, honestly, and this outfit is giving grown-up school girls but in the best way possible!

16. Leather Jacket, Pleated Denim Skirt + Boots Outfit

Another way to wear a pleated skirt is to wear denim, which has a different vibe, especially when paired with a leather jacket and black knee boots.

17. Vest Top, Black Skirt, and Boots Outfit

This little beige vest, black skirt, and boots are outfits that are so easy to put together but somehow can encapsulate the style so well. It proves you can participate in a fashion trend or emulate a specific style with only a few good pieces.

18. Blazer with Bodycon Maxi Dress + Sneakers

These days, you can throw a blazer over almost anything to boost an outfit, but it mainly works with a bodycon maxi dress and sneakers. It’s combining two things that shouldn’t work but somehow do.

19. Cap, Blazer + Pants Outfit

This outfit is probably the epitome of preppy style because it combines some of the elements we’ve come to love about the style: a blazer and some loose pants, but it does so in a fun and not at-all stuffy way.

20. Oversized Sweater Vest and Boots Outfit

A loose, baggy sweater vest paired with sheer tights and some boots is a match made in heaven; it is an outfit with the right amount of preppy but free-spirited!

21. V-neck sweater and Pleated Skirt

This is a classy, preppy look with the V-neck sweater vest, the oversized shirt layered under, and the little pleated skirt!

11 School Girl Outfits to Nail the Preppy Fashion Trend

woman sitting on car - Preppy Girl Aesthetic

1. Show Off Your Socks (Knee Highs, Of Course)

Long socks are an essential part of the preppy look, whether they're crew length or knee-high. They're often paired with loafers and babydoll shoes, but we're partial to these ballet flats. They give the popular aesthetic a refreshing update.

2. Try a Graphic T-Shirt Instead of a Button-Down

If you want a more casual feel with an indie sleaze spin, trade your standard button-down for a graphic tee instead. This quick switch is an easy yet effective way to get your schoolgirl outfit to stand out.

3. Add Some Edge with Combat Boots

For a twist on the schoolcore trend, ditch the Mary Janes and opt for moodier footwear, like combat boots. I would take the plaid skirt — and make sure it's a mini — and pair it with logo designer tights and combat boots to add edge.

4. Go Extra Preppy with a Tie

It's schoolcore with a pleated mini skirt, knee-high socks, and a tie. Add a cardigan or blazer, and you're ready for class. Alternatively, you can ditch the skirt altogether by opting for an oversized shirt and blazer combo ("lampshading").

5. Break Out the Trousers

A wide-leg khaki pair, styled with a button-down and loafers, is classic schoolcore attire. Swap out your dress shirt for a cropped sweater to modernize this uniform.

6. Say Yes to Knits

Sweaters can be worn as a top or added to your outfit as an accessory. If choosing the latter, style it over a button-down or let it hang over your shoulders for some added flair.

7. Risk Being Risqué with a Bandeau Top

Gonzalez Mayo shared that her ideal schoolcore outfit is preppy "but also a little risqué." Her go-to combines a matching plaid blazer and skirt set with a bandeau bra top, knee-high socks, and loafers. The result will get you the celebrity-loved bracket look with an overtone of light academia.

8. Stick with a Scheme

Perhaps nothing feels more uniform (or like an actual uniform) than a sleek, monochromatic moment. Moody black is perfect for fall -- or any time of year, for that matter. Don't be afraid to experiment with color for a dose of dopamine dressing.

9. Slip on Some Accessories

Channel your inner Blair Waldorf with a headband, or go more Do Revenge with a beret. Both are solid options that will make your schoolgirl outfit noteworthy.

10. Incorporate Personal Style

Add your favorite accent to the mix once you've got your main preppy piece, such as a pleated skirt or plaid blazer. Don't shy away from color, and get creative with footwear -- there are no rules here.

11. Opt for a Full Suit or Matching Set

We enjoy a pre-made, no-fuss outfit, and with a button-down shirt and tie, you'll appear ready for class. There are many ways to wear suits today, but the consensus is that less is more (read: backless, pantless, shirtless, etc.).

Preppy Girl Outfits With Jeans

woman pointing at something - Preppy Girl Aesthetic

The Classic Combo: White Button Down Shirt with Jeans

The white button-down shirt with jeans is a classic outfit that always looks polished and put together. Start with a slightly oversized silhouette like the Sézane Max shirt and tuck it into straight-leg jeans. Button-down shirts are an excellent staple for preppy style, either in classic white or a simple stripe. You can also throw a classic cardigan over your shoulders for the ultimate preppy outfit. Roll up the sleeves and undo a few top buttons for effortless style.

Pair a white button-down and jeans with classic accessories like a leather tote (code JAK15 for 15% off) and loafers. A straw bag and ballet flats would also look chic. Wear jewelry like pearl studs or a simple statement necklace like the Dorsey moss.

Stripes and White Jeans

Is there anything more chic than a striped sweater and white jeans? It's simple, classic and timeless. To me, stripes are an integral component of preppy style. It's also such an easy combination to create. The possibilities are endless when picking a striped sweater with stripes of equal thickness or a skinny stripe. Color combinations like cream and navy, black and white, or camel and white all look great with white jeans.

Keep footwear simple with a strappy leather sandal, loafer, or ballet flat. You can boost the look with classic gold jewelry, a pearl necklace, or a white sapphire necklace like the Dorsey Moss (I always wear this one). A simple leather crossbody or straw tote is the perfect accessory.

Blazers Are a Preppy Girl's Best Friend

Pair a navy blazer with straight-leg jeans for a Ralph Lauren-style preppy outfit. There are many ways to style a blazer with jeans, whether you do a basic tee, simple stripes, or white button-down. You can tailor it to the occasion, depending on whether it's casual or you're headed to work. Keep it simple with tan loafers, though you could also wear white sneakers. Accessorize with tortoise sunglasses and a straw tote.

Cashmere Sweater Set, White Jeans, and Loafers

This cashmere/silk sweater set from the Kilte Collection is a dream. It's luxurious, soft, chic and gorgeous. Made with mother-of-pearl buttons and lightweight ribbed stitching, it's warm without being heavy or too hot and instantly boosts any outfit. Admittedly, I've worn this on date night too many times to count, but I just keep returning because I feel so good about it.

Pair a sweater set with jeans and loafers for a night out or a special occasion. You could also wear a kitten heel or strappy sandal for different shoe options. Add a cute leather bag and some simple jewelry. The Adelaide Engravable Heart Pendant Necklace is a pretty everyday piece (use code JAK15 for 15% off).

Sweater Vests Are a Preppy Essential

Sweater vests are an iconic preppy fashion staple. They're also great for those between seasons like fall and spring when the weather changes drastically throughout the day. Sweater vests look great over a stripe tee or blouse with jeans. Leather sandals, ballet flats, or even clogs look timeless and chic. Accessorize with a straw or leather tote.

Wide Leg Jeans, Knit Sweater, and Booties

For winter weather, a stylish knit sweater over a button-down shirt with wide-leg jeans will keep you warm and chic. A wool robe coat to pull the look together is always timeless. See how to wear wide-leg jeans here. For spring, these jeans cuffed with sandals or a loafer would look chic with a lighter knit or white button-down shirt.

21 Preppy Girl Outfit Ideas for Every Occasion

woman with a bag on tour - Preppy Girl Aesthetic
