What Is a Preppy Room?
A preppy room has many of the same elements as a preppy wardrobe:
Traditional lines
Classic materials
Eccentric mix of patterns
Nautical motifs
Colors ranging
From bold reds and navy blues to pastel mashups like pink and green.
The Origins Of Preppy Style
The origins of preppy style go back to the late 1890s and early 1900s, but preppy style as we know it was branded in the 1980s with Lisa Birnbach's The Official Preppy Handbook (1980), a tongue-in-cheek guide to this classic style inspired by the tweedy look of New England prep schoolers and Ivy Leaguers.
While the preppy style reached its apotheosis in the 1980s, it never went out of style for those who embrace the lifestyle, and it has come and gone as a trend for those discovering it anew.
Defining Preppy Style
It's nearly impossible to summarize the preppy interior design style in one sentence because it embodies an entire lifestyle. This design movement is rich in juxtapositions:
New and old
Timeless yet current
Masculine and feminine
Formal yet relaxed.
Originally referred to as Ivy League style and dating back to the 1910s, it celebrates prep school culture and old-fashioned leisure sports like:
Polo
Swimming
Fishing
Tennis
This is mirrored in a home's book collection, textiles, and art. Pastels often dominate the color palette, and preppy rooms focus on pattern.
Where Preppy Style Thrives
Although preppy design has New England roots, its heart now lies in locales like Palm Beach and Southampton. It has also evolved to take on a regional life of its own.
You'll now notice a Southern and laid-back California coastal influence in many preppy homes. Designers often mold the preppy look to fit their client's tastes, whether pure Americana or a little French.
Making Preppy Style Your Own
You can take the preppy interior style in a minimalist or maximalist direction. Infusing your home with it can be as simple as adding a few monogrammed accessories or as elaborate as wallpapering your entire bedroom. We've gathered designer-created rooms that illustrate the timeless, sophisticated style that never takes itself too seriously. Below, you'll find spaces with many patterns, including:
Florals
Nautical stripes
Plaid
Houndstooth
This collection of preppy room ideas also proves you can take this design style in countless directions and add your personalized touch through your favorite colors and collections.

These additions infuse visual allure and cultivate a warm, inviting ambiance that beckons relaxation. By incorporating these cozy and stylish textiles, you seamlessly meld aesthetic sophistication with tactile comfort, generating an atmosphere that encapsulates the essence of preppy decor, where style and coziness converge to create a visually captivating and emotionally embracing environment.
8. Classic Area Rugs
An area rug can delineate the space and unify its components. Classic patterns such as chevron or herringbone amplify the preppy style's allure.

By seamlessly integrating a thoughtfully selected rug, you achieve a harmonious fusion of form and function, wherein the preppy aesthetics merge with the inviting comfort central to a well-designed and captivating living space.
9. Elegant Curtains
Curtains can have a considerable influence on your living room's ambiance. Opt for curtain styles that exude elegance, featuring grommet or pinch-pleat tops. Lightweight fabrics permit the gentle passage of natural light, instilling a luminous and welcoming aura.
By selecting curtains that align with the preppy style's refined aesthetics, you orchestrate a harmonious interplay between light and textiles, shaping an environment that is visually pleasing and inviting. Through this meticulous attention to curtain selection, you elevate your living room's atmosphere, imbuing it with sophistication while maintaining an aura of comfort and allure.
10. Gallery Wall of Memories

Step-by-Step Guide to Creating a Preppy Room
1. Basic Training for a Preppy Room Makeover
Starting your journey to creating a preppy room begins with the basics—understanding the fundamentals of the style. The first thing you need to do is select a color palette that oozes both class and elegance, much like the timeless attire of an old-school Ivy League attendee.
Think of neutral hues that have a certain depth to them. Shades such as the pristine whites that remind one of an untouched canvas, the deep navy mirroring a starless night sky, or the versatile grays reminiscent of a tranquil cloud-laden day are typically safe harbors. These colors are the soil where your preppy style can grow and bloom.
Incorporating Timeless Quality into Furniture Selection for a Preppy Aesthetic
With your color palette set, it's time to let your creativity loose. Using accessories and accent pieces, add colorful splashes here and there. Think of these as the paint strokes on your once untouched canvas, giving character and life to your room. As you sail into the furniture selection phase, remember that preppy is about quality and timelessness.
Invest in furniture similar to a classic novel—a timeless piece whose charm grows yearly. They are not merely physical entities occupying space but companions that will journey with you over time. This approach ensures that your room maintains its aesthetic appeal and becomes a space rich with stories and memories, encapsulating the true essence of the preppy aesthetic.
2. Unpacking Your Preppy Personality
With the fundamental elements in place, it's akin to having a beautifully composed piece of music; your room now requires the symphony to come alive truly. This stage in your design journey is where the essence of you imbues your space, allowing your unique character to radiate throughout the room.
The photos you've lovingly collected over the years, artwork that whispers stories only you can hear, and souvenirs gathered from your numerous adventures around the globe — these personal artifacts are akin to the unique notes in your symphony, each bringing a distinctive tone that resonates with your style.
Enhancing Preppy Design with Thoughtful Accessory Choices
In the world of preppy design, every piece holds the potential to be a showstopper. Accessories, like:
Throw pillows
Cozy blankets
Textured rugs
They aren't just decorative items; they're the garnishing that perfects the dish, imbuing your space with vibrant colors and intriguing textures. Like the varied notes that make up a beautiful melody, these simple additions can harmoniously make your room sing. Think of these accessories as the spices in a masterfully prepared meal.
Personalizing Preppy Design: Crafting a Unique Narrative Through Accessories
The right amount can elevate the dish, turning something ordinary into an extraordinary feast for the senses. Incorporate these pieces thoughtfully, considering their ability to add richness and depth to your space. A preppy room isn't just a reflection of a style; it's a testament to your personal journey, experiences, and taste.
It's about the story each item tells and the distinct personality it lends to your space. By adding these personalized touches, you're not just decorating a room; you're crafting a narrative that is uniquely and beautifully yours.
3. Details, Details, Details
When designing a preppy room, the bigger elements, like furniture and color schemes, may grab your initial attention. However, the subtle, often overlooked nuances, the intricate threads weaving together the whole, truly bring out the charm of a preppy aesthetic. These details are like the gentle drumbeats underpinning a lively melody—often subtle, but without them, the song loses its rhythm.
Consider lighting
It's much more than mere functional fixtures. The subtle glow breathes life into your space, gently accentuating its features and creating a welcoming and stylish ambiance.
Hardware
Plays a pivotal role in this ensemble. Think of it as the punctuation in a well-written story—it may seem insignificant, but its absence can make all the difference. From doorknobs to drawer handles, the style and finish you choose are instrumental in contributing to the overall narrative of your preppy room.
Remember The Finishings
The final brushstrokes on your preppy masterpiece. Be it the crispness of a well-placed trim or the quiet elegance of a carefully chosen curtain fabric, these elements weave the final threads into your preppy tapestry, turning your room from simply functional into something truly delightful.
The secret to creating a preppy room is understanding that every element can transform your space, no matter how small. So, give due attention to these seemingly minute details—they might be silent contributors, but their impact on your room's overall aesthetic is, without a doubt, loud and profound.
4. The Clean Preppy Room
A key characteristic distinguishing a preppy room is its unwavering dedication to cleanliness and order. It's the crisp white shirt neatly tucked into perfectly ironed trousers of room aesthetics. Your bed should always be well-made—a reflection of a disciplined lifestyle, with pillows, fluffed and the bedspread creaseless, inviting relaxation. Maintaining sparkling clean floors is like setting the stage for a grand performance.
The Impact of Clutter on Room Aesthetics and Harmony
It's an essential part of the overall look, and even the slightest dust can steal the spotlight from your well-orchestrated design symphony. Every surface, from tabletops to bookshelves, should be clear and organized, as an uncluttered space is synonymous with a clear mind.
Clutter is to a preppy room what dissonance is to a harmonious tune—it disrupts the overall flow, making the space appear chaotic and uninviting. Picture this: your room as a visual symphony, where every element works harmoniously to create a stunning composition.
Cleanliness in Creating a Stylish and Tranquil Space
Just as a beautifully performed piece of music is soothing to the ears, a tidy, well-kept room is a visual treat, providing comfort and peace to anyone who enters. Maintaining cleanliness is not just an aesthetic requirement; it's an attitude, a commitment to creating a stylish space that is a haven of tranquility and order. Let your preppy room be a testament to this elegant and disciplined lifestyle, where every object has its place and clutter is a distant memory.
5. Get Inspired to Create a Preppy Room
In your quest to design a preppy room that resonates with your unique style, there's a universe of inspiration waiting to be discovered. Into the glossy pages of decor magazines, explore the infinite visual treat offered by online platforms, or simply stroll around your dwelling.
Each space, each corner can spark a creative idea that can be the defining feature of your preppy room. Peek into the living spaces of your friends and family.
Infusing Personal Elegance into Preppy Room Design
Observe the elements that lend character to their rooms. It could be a color, a furniture piece, or a layout style. Whatever catches your eye, contemplate how these elements could be woven into your room, adding a touch of personalized elegance.
But remember, designing a preppy room is not just about replicating a look—it's about breathing life into a space, reflecting your unique style, preferences, and experiences. It's about using inspiration as a springboard and letting your creativity fly.
Designing a Preppy Room as a Journey of Style and Storytelling
Crafting a preppy room is an exciting voyage of creating a space embodying elegance and timelessness. It's like weaving a beautiful tapestry of style and sophistication, where every thread adds to the overall charm.
By incorporating these tips into your design process, you are setting the stage for a space that doesn't just please the eyes but tells your story in the most stylish way possible.
6. Additional Preppy Room Tips
Delving into the preppy aesthetic is like embarking on an adventure, traversing through classic patterns that add an extra layer of elegance. Stripes, plaid, and gingham are your trusty companions in this journey, adding rhythm and consistency to your room, much like the repeating refrains of a catchy tune.
As you navigate the preppy design terrain, don't avoid dotting your path with colorful accents. Accent pillows, warm blankets, and textured rugs become your color palette, each adding a splash of vibrancy that stands out against the neutral backdrop, just like bright wildflowers in a lush, green meadow. In this preppy narrative, your room is not just a space—it's a canvas where you paint the story of your life.
Adding Personal Touches to Enhance Room Character
Personal touches like:
Cherished photographs
Treasured artwork
Souvenirs from your travels
Are the brushstrokes that add depth to your narrative, making it truly unique and personal? Natural materials such as wood, leather, and linen resemble the charming protagonist in your preppy story.
These elements bring a sense of earthy authenticity and timeless elegance, like a classic novel that never goes out of style. Maintaining cleanliness and orderliness is the golden rule in your preppy guidebook. A clean, well-organized room is like a well-edited manuscript—it's easy to navigate, appealing, and, most importantly, inviting.

Preps will always have a soft spot for stripes. Furniture and decor such as striped sofas, pillows, rugs, and wall coverings are more than suitable in a preppy room.

Nothing could make a room preppier than an indoor golf putting green, like this space from Kate Marker Interiors, designed for the golf fanatic who can't get enough.
28. Indulge in Excess

29. Mix Old and New
This dining room by Fran Keenan is overflowing with eye-catching antiques. Antiques are only sometimes enough to pull off a preppy look. Keenan describes this space as definitely a favorite room.
30. Take a Minimalist Approach
One of the best things about preppy interior design is that it fuses with nearly any personal style. If patterns and bright colors aren't your thing, stick to a white and pastel scheme. Connecticut-based designer Chauncey Boothby gave this kitchen a fresh look with two islands that perfectly match the pendant lights. The aqua blue paired with pieces like a framed duck print and wicker baskets are a nod to the beautiful New England seaside.
31. Embrace Academia
In this 1930s home just outside Washington, D.C., Melissa Colgan designed a living room that doubles as a library. The bookshelves display antique books and collections, and there's even a spot to safely stow away rare and first-edition books under glass. Academia is a common theme in preppy design. So go ahead and show off your bookshelf wealth. Colgan chose a light, soothing lavender for the walls and built-ins to keep the design from looking stuffy.
32. Pair High-Contrast Colors
Think of the colors of your favorite preppy sports team. There's a good chance it's a high-contrast pairing, like deep green and gold. These energizing hues make this sunroom by Claire Staszak of Centered by Design feel warm, like a summer's day.

Before hanging the frames, arrange them on the floor to find the perfect arrangement. You can go for a symmetrical look or something more eclectic.
Consider painting the wall a neutral color to make the photos pop. Adding small decorative items between the frames can enhance the display. This could include vintage keys, small mirrors, or even art.
16. Ornate Mantelpiece
An ornate mantelpiece can instantly elevate the style of your living room. Picture a fireplace surrounded by an intricately designed mantel that grabs attention. Choose a mix of vintage and modern elements. Pairing upcycled wood with painted white brick can look stunning.

18. Blue and White China Vases
Blue and white china vases add a touch of elegance to any preppy living room. These timeless vases complement both modern and traditional decor.

18 Preppy College Dorm Ideas for a Classy Vibe
1. Transform Your Walls with Decorative Wallpaper
You may not have considered this decor item, but it is essential for creating your new preppy room! Decorative wallpaper makes a massive difference in your space and brings out your personality.
When you move into your new dorm room, it will most likely have plain white walls that you will want to decorate with wall decor! Why not pick out your favorite wallpaper design in your room? And don’t worry because there are plenty of fun designs to choose from that will fit the preppy room aesthetic. For example, you could buy this cute polka-dotted wallpaper that screams prep.
2. Bring the Outdoors In with Butterfly Mirror Wall Decals
Another fun way to decorate the walls in your new dorm is with wall decals. Wall decals are another easy and fun way to make your dorm room look more like your dream room.
For example, these mirrored butterfly wall decals would be a super cute addition to your walls and add some trendy decor to your new room. These would fit many dorm room aesthetics, especially the preppy ones.
3. Cozy Up with a Pink Throw Blanket
You will also want to make sure that you have all the bedding that you need for your new room, including a blanket. Getting a super cute decorative throw blanket like this fluffy pink one is such a cute preppy room idea. It will make sure your bed is super comfy, and it will also help you get the trendy preppy room that you want!
4. Add Some Glam with an LED Light Vanity Mirror
Another super cute way to get a preppy room while adding some function to your space is with a fancy mirror like this LED light vanity mirror. This will be a very useful addition to your new room and help you achieve a preppy room design! It’s an additional light source, and dorm rooms need those.
5. Preppy Decorative Pillows
Of course, you will also want to get decorative pillows to make your bedding stand out! Decorative pillows are also essential to creating a preppy room, so make sure you get some super cute and colorful ones like this pink tie-dye faux fur pillow.
6. Make a Statement with a Studded Headboard
Another of my favorite preppy room ideas is getting a headboard for your bed! A headboard will not be included when you move into your new dorm room, so you will want to ensure you bring one. What’s great about buying your headboard is you can get a super cute one with a fun design that will go with the preppy room trend, like this white studded headboard.
7. Create a Pastel Wall Collage
One of the most accessible preppy room ideas is to add a huge collage to your wall that incorporates your colors. I am sure you have probably seen this trend everywhere — wall collages have been super popular because of many TikTok videos showcasing fun room decor. However, to get the preppy room trend, you will want to look for a pastel wall collage like this one!
8. Get Comfy with a Faux Fur Accent Chair
Another preppy room idea you may have yet to consider is getting a cute desk chair or lounging chair. You will probably be given a desk chair in your dorm room, but most of the time, it will be a plain-looking desk chair or one that is uncomfortable.
Why not add fun to your dorm room with a cute, comfy chair? I love this faux fur chair you can use in your dorm for writing at your desk or lounging. This chair will also give you the preppy room look you want!
9. Hang Up Preppy Pastel Wall Prints
If you would rather have posters on your walls instead of a collage, or if you want to add some posters along with a collage, you can do so because wall decor is a huge part of creating a preppy room.
When looking for posters to add to your new dorm room, go for girly and colorful ones like this super cute poster from Dormify. And don’t worry because if you find many different ones you like, you can add multiple posters to your new dorm room!
10. Ruffle Bedding
Another super important part about creating your new preppy room is bedding, and the most important part of your bedding is your comforter. To create your new preppy room, you will want to get a super cute comforter that gives off girly vibes.
For example, a ruffled comforter is a great option. If you want one for your new room, I suggest this cute pink one.
11. Storage Unit
You will also want to make sure that you have enough storage for your room. Storage is super important because dorms generally just come with a closet and desk — not exactly enough for most of us. You will need to bring some additional storage options with you.
What’s great about this is you can pick out some cute storage/furniture items to accompany your preppy room design. For example, this simple white storage unit will be the perfect addition to your new dorm room, and you can add some cute decorations.
12. Mushroom Lamp
You will also need extra lighting for your dorm, so consider what kind of lamps or decorative lighting you want to buy. A great option if you are looking for some more lighting is this mushroom lamp. As a popular room decor trend, mushroom lamps have been all over TikTok.
They come in many colors, including pastels, which are great for a preppy room. You can try a fun trend and add additional light to your space, so you can’t go wrong here!
13. Arch Wall Decal
Check out this arch wall decal for an alternative wall decor option for your preppy room. You might not have seen this kind of wall decor before, but adding a big, bold pop of color to your space is a great option.
If you consider adding this kind of wall decor to your room, I recommend adding it over your desk, as shown above. This will make your desk area look more fun and add to the preppy room design you are creating!
14. Cute Candles
If you just want extra decor items to place around your room that go with the preppy room trend, I recommend going for cute, trendy candles like this one. If you are on TikTok, you have seen these or similar recently trendy candles.
These candles are the perfect addition to your new room if you need extra decor for your preppy room design. Note: If you live on campus, many colleges have banned candles in the dorms, so check your school’s regulations before bringing this item.
15. Preppy Decorative Books
Another great option if you are looking for some extra decor for your new preppy room is fashion books like this one! These are great if you are looking for something to place on a table or nightstand in your room, and they go with the preppy room style, as seen on multiple room TikTok videos that have been trendy recently. I also love that these books will add more color to your room to help you create your new preppy room!
16. Fun Coasters
To protect your dorm room furniture from stains and spills, you can’t go wrong with fun coasters that enhance your preppy bedroom aesthetic. One great option is quirky acrylic coasters, easily found on sites like Etsy. Another great option is these adorable intricate beaded coasters, which you can find on Etsy or local boutiques!
17. Heart Graffiti Art
This graffiti-inspired heart wall art is one of our favorite preppy decor elements. If you’re an artsy, DIY person, you can easily make your heart graffiti art with a big canvas and some cans of colorful spray paint. If you’re not in the mood to get messy, you can buy a premade heart graffiti print!
18. Preppy Desk Accessories
When you’re in the process of decorating your preppy dorm room, don’t neglect your desk! Clear acrylic desk organizers and simple gold jewelry stands are perfect for showing off your perfectly aesthetic makeup, skincare, and jewelry collections like:
Gold-trimmed
wall-mounted mirror
Collage of bold, colorful prints
It is the perfect way to add cheer and fun to your morning routine with an aesthetic desk setup.

12 Preppy Bedroom Ideas that are Pretty in Pink
1. Embrace Floral Patterns to Create a Preppy Aesthetic
In this delightful pink-and-white preppy bedroom, a combination of charming elements harmoniously creates an inviting space with a touch of whimsy. The focal point is the beautiful pink floral wallpaper, which exudes charm and sets the stage for the overall preppy aesthetic. Positioned gracefully beside the bed, a flamingo pink side table injects a pop of vibrant color, adding an unexpected yet delightful twist.
The design continues to impress with the exquisite white, pink, and green floral patterned matching bed throw and bolster cushion, complemented by:
Pink
White
Green spot
Stripe curtains
This effortlessly mirrors the bed's captivating hues, creating a perfectly balanced and cohesive ambiance within this preppy room decor.
2. Wall Prints for Pink Preppy Bedroom
These pink preppy aesthetic-inspired wall prints are perfect for these preppy bedroom designs. They can be used as stand-alone prints or inserted into your chosen frames.
3. Mix and Match Patterns & Colours
The best way to mix and match colors, patterns, and preppy designs into a preppy aesthetic bedroom such as this is to start with a cohesive color palette. In the above example, the interior designer has opted for a combination of:
Soft pastels
Pinks
Greens
Whites
Introduce patterns to create a serene and elegant backdrop for the space, ensuring they complement rather than clash.
Using a Dominant Pattern to Set the Tone for Room Decor
Choose one dominant pattern, like the pink and white floral headboard, and let it set the tone for the room decor. Incorporate smaller patterns, like the beautiful traditional cushions on the bed, in coordinating colors to add visual interest without overwhelming the space.
To maintain balance, use solid colors for larger items, allowing the patterns to shine as accent elements. In this case, the pink of the curtains and the white of the bedding serve this purpose. Add touches of whimsy, like the mix of colorful preppy wall decor images above the bedhead, to infuse the room with a cute, playful vibe.
4. Pink Strawberry Preppy Bedding
This super cute preppy bed set is an easy way to add a colorful preppy vibe to any bedroom space. It is also reversible, so you can completely change the look and pattern if you wish to create an alternative preppy style.
5. Use Bold Colour Contrasts
The large white four-poster bed is without doubt the focal point of this room, evoking an opulence and grandeur of years gone by. Adorning the bed is a pink waffled duvet cover, adding a subtle touch of femininity to the bed space.
The period white bedside storage furniture maintains a clean and sophisticated look, blending seamlessly with the bed's aesthetics. They introduced pops of vibrant orange through the Elephant motif ottoman and cushions, infusing the room with an energetic and modern twist. A pink throw, orange-framed mirror, and orange side stand tie into the color scheme, adding further subtle flashes of color around the preppy-style bedroom space.
6. Preppy Bedrooms that Delight in Pink & White
The interior design of this preppy bedroom is very much about bold patterns, with a strong focus on pink. White is the dominant clean and crisp backdrop to this preppy room space, allowing the pink accents in the:
Striped rug
Desk chair
window seat cushion
Blinds
Pillows
Table lamps
To stand bold and proud against it. This striking preppy bedroom idea would suit any teen, especially if pink is their favorite color!
7. Add Width with Horizontal Stripes
The preppy design inspiration for this teen bedroom is the perfect example of how bold patterns and contrasting colors can work together to create an interesting and harmonious preppy room decor. A beautiful olive green color has been used to boldly decorate a stripy horizontal pattern as a feature wall behind the bed's headboard.
The green is also complemented in the bedspread trim and table lamp for a beautiful matched look. Different tones of pink have been neatly contrasted with the olive green elements used in the bed cushions, decorative frame of the silhouette portrait, and patterned curtains.
8. Incorporate the Ceiling into the Preppy Theme
Bedroom ceilings are generally left white and plain, as homeowners don't know how to decorate them differently. In contrast, this preppy bedroom design shows what can be achieved if brave enough to go against the norm.
In the example shown, pink-patterned wallpaper has been used to create an impressive and bold ceiling design that takes this bedroom space to a new level. The predominantly white decoration and pink area rug on the floor balance it perfectly.
9. Create a Grownup Bedroom with Preppy Touches
This more grown-up and sophisticated preppy bedroom space uses simple and subtle touches of preppy aesthetic, which are present in the duvet cover, wall decor display, and cool neon lightning bolt sign. The mass of white decor elsewhere gives the bedroom a cool and airy feel, sure to be a hit with anyone who resides there.
10. Use a Range of Bright Complimentary Colours
The preppy style is about color and pattern, which have been significantly used in this preppy bedroom design. The quirky mix of geometric and floral patterns on the cushions and polka dots on the wall create an eclectic preppy aesthetic.
11. Preppy Aesthetic Cushion Covers
As shown by my collection of bedrooms with a preppy aesthetic, many use patterns, wording, and animal motifs within their cushions and other accessories. I have chosen these beautiful cushion covers as an ideal accompaniment to your preppy bedroom decor.
12. A Preppy Vibe for Your Cheerleader Teen
Using touches of cheerleader and US college-related decor, such as the wall-mounted pompoms, with painted diagonal stripes in matching colors, gold font flag, and colorful framed wall art, this preppy aesthetic is a winning combination.
A Preppy Boy Bedroom Design
When designing a preppy bedroom for boys, it's important to create a classic look that won’t feel childish too quickly as their interests change. Here are some tips for achieving this look.
Start With a Classic Color Scheme
Instead of going with a specific theme, start with a color scheme or palette. We settled on a classic red, white, and blue color scheme for this preppy boy's bedroom. This well-balanced color palette is timeless and will likely work for your boy for years.
As he grows and his interests change, he can easily add personal touches based on his hobbies or sports teams that will coordinate nicely with this traditional color scheme.
Layer on Timeless Bedding
Bedding is a great place to start when designing any bedroom, including a preppy boy bedroom. To create a classic look, we started with custom-built white bunk beds in this shared boy bedroom. We layered on timeless bedding with classic prints such as:
Gingham sheets
Blue quilts
Both are from Pottery Barn Kids. For a pop of red and a preppy touch, these Etsy red plaid pillows finish off each bed. In this bedroom design, there is a queen bed on the bottom and a twin bed on top, so having the same bedding helps make the room look cohesive.
Make Bunk Beds Practical for Kids
Many of us grown-ups had bunk beds when we were kids—I know I did. As the big sister, I got the coveted top bunk. There are some disadvantages to being on the top bunk. Mostly, you need to climb up and down a ladder when you need anything. Anytime I add bunk beds to a kid room design, I always like to add three things:
1. A Narrow Shelf
These skinny book ledges are perfect for a tight space. These ledges work to store a couple of books when a child can’t fall asleep, a cup of water, or some other small objects kids may want close by. This prevents a lot of trips going up and down (or calling out to Mom for the requested item!)
2. A Light
Whenever kids share a bedroom, it can get tricky…maybe one child wants to go to bed, but the other wants to stay up and read. Perhaps one needs total darkness to sleep, but the other fears the dark. I always try to put a small light on each child’s bed so they can use their light to read, as a nightlight, etc., without disturbing their sibling by turning on an overhead light. If you are able, it is always lovely to hard wire these lights in, like in this boy's bedroom makeover.
We chose these nautical-inspired sconces for their preppy look and safety. This isn’t the spot for a delicate glass sconce that could break if it gets bumped. I liked the slim profile and the fact this grill protected the glass. Can’t hardwire in a sconce? No problem? Look for plug-in sconces or clip-on lights to attach to a shelf or the side of their bed.
TIP: If you are finding the cords aren’t long enough, you can take your light to a lighting store, and they can add an extra long cord for a reasonable price
3. Customized Art
When kids share a bedroom, I really want their individual personalities to be reflected in their space. In this boy's bedroom, we did custom silhouettes of each boy (how cute are those?!). You could also do a monogram, their name, or frame something special or meaningful to them.
Create a Play Space in the Bedroom
If you have the room, I always encourage kids to have a space to play in their bedrooms. Because the bedroom would have hardwood floors, we added this striped area rug from the Mood Board for some softness. Mom also wanted some rustic shelves with storage for toys and books.
Add Artwork that Fits the Preppy Theme
Adding artwork to a kid’s bedroom is one of the easiest (and least expensive ways) to help pull in a bedroom’s theme. To keep with this classic, preppy look, I found a set of 8 vintage plane prints that pulled in the theme and the colors we wanted. Mom hung these in a grid pattern to take up most of the wall. I love the classic, clean look and best yet, she can always swap out the prints if the boys want a new look.
Finish Off the Room with a Ceiling Fan
Remember your ceiling when you are designing your kid’s bedroom. My client wanted a ceiling fan with light in her boy’s bedroom, so I found this simple, nautical-inspired silver ceiling fan.
Filling Up Walls
I don’t suggest trying to fill up every wall in a kid’s bedroom. The main artwork was the massive set of airplane prints, but we wanted a little something more. So right as you walk into this boy's bedroom, my client hung this modern chalkboard-style US map. I love how it sets the mood for the whole bedroom design!

12 Essential Preppy Room Decor Elements
1. Sophisticated Color Palette

2. Elegant Patterns
Preppy decor thrives on the enduring appeal of timeless patterns. Elevate your living room with iconic designs such as:

By tastefully incorporating these patterns, your living room acquires a distinctive character that embodies sophistication and an everlasting sense of style. It evokes a sense of nostalgia while remaining relevant and captivating to all who enter.
3. Refined Accents
Subtle nuances have a significant impact on preppy decor. Embrace brass accents on furniture and decor to infuse a dash of luxury. Personalize your space with monogrammed pillows, a charming touch.
Elevate your dining experience by selecting fine china and refined flatware when setting the table. These meticulous details collectively breathe life into preppy aesthetics, seamlessly amalgamating elegance and individuality to enrich your living environment with a distinctive allure that resonates throughout every corner.
4. Timeless Silhouettes
The selection of furniture plays a pivotal role in defining your living room's persona. Opt for pieces featuring enduring silhouettes, such as rolled-arm sofas and wingback chairs.

5. Chic Upholstery
Preppy living rooms effortlessly combine comfort and style. Opt for upholstered furniture crafted from lush fabrics such as velvet or chenille.

This convergence of luxury and comfort captures the essence of preppy aesthetics, creating an ambiance that harmoniously merges elegance with an atmosphere of warm hospitality.
6. Nautical Elements
For enthusiasts of coastal aesthetics, infuse nautical nuances into your preppy living room. Integrate rope details on lamps or decor pieces to evoke a maritime ambiance.

This integration of maritime elements within preppy aesthetics introduces a seamless blend of elegance and coastal charm, producing a living room with a sense of relaxed sophistication and an alluring connection to the sea.
7. Plush Throws and Pillows
Soft textiles are a fundamental element in preppy living rooms. Layer plush throws and preppy-patterned pillows on top of your sofas and chairs.
A meticulously chosen rug contributes to comfort and brings elegance into your living room.
Infuse your living room with a personalized touch by fashioning a gallery wall with treasured memories like:
Frame family photographs
Vintage artwork
Objects holding sentimental significance
This arrangement imparts a distinctive character and metamorphoses your living room into a genuine representation of your life's narrative.
Through the thoughtful amalgamation of cherished artifacts, you craft an environment that resonates with individuality and authenticity. This epitomizes the essence of preppy living room aesthetics, where personalization and style intertwine to curate a space that is not only visually enchanting but also profoundly meaningful.

32 Preppy Room Ideas for Every Room in Your Home
1. Say Yes to Pink
Pink is a happy hue. In preppy homes, pink isn't just for children's rooms. Utilize this cheerful color around the house as you wish. It shines in a guest bedroom, where even the most minor details (such as charming tassels adhered to nightstand drawer pulls) make an impression.
2. Decorate With Cane
Cane furniture is a staple in many preppy homes. Pair cane pierces with bright colors to keep your space looking contemporary and full of pep. Another preppy fave is Burlwood, which appears in the mirror above this chic console.
3. Pair Pink and Blue
We often associate preppy style with an abundance of pink and green, but remember that pink and blue can play just as nicely together. The preppy style is all about using sweet shapes and patterns, too. Bring on the scalloped edges (like we see on this sofa and coffee table), and of course, remember those stripes.
4. Incorporate Coastal Accents
Preppy spaces often lean coastal, so don't be afraid to draw seaside elements into your room: think wicker, soft white fabrics and furnishings, and, of course, lots of blue tones.
5. Say Hello to the Navy
Navy is another favorite preppy hue and complements several other tones. This layered, scalloped mirror adds elegance to the bathroom.
6. Be Sophisticated
Preppy spaces are known for being orderly and sophisticated. Touches like a stylish table lamp, framed photos, and a vase filled with fresh flowers will go a long way.
7. Include Animal Motifs
Preppy rooms are often quite playful—take a cue from Lilly Pulitzer's signature patterns and bring some animal motifs into the mix. We love this charming wicker elephant stool that will bring a smile to kids' and adults' faces alike.
8. Go Gingham
Say yes to gingham, a pattern that works on everything from tablecloths to curtains or wall treatments. Blue-and-white gingham wallpaper is excellent for a child's room and can be mixed with other prints.
9. Try a Jute Rug
Jute rugs are known for being durable and classic and are often spotted in preppy spaces. Preps like investing in well-made pieces that stand the test of time, and a jute rug is a perfect example.
10. Weave in Some Wicker
Budget-friendly wicker is another must-have material in preppy homes, like this whimsical bookcase that adds texture to the pastel pink room.
11. Pick Famous Patterns
Some patterns are immediately associated with preppy styles—such as Scalamandré zebra print. It's used in blue and white and's perfect for a child's room.
12. Bring on the Bistro Chairs
French bistro chairs are quite common in preppy dining spaces and come in various festive colors. Preps love to host and gather with friends, so a dining room must accommodate the entire crew.
13. Display Equestrian Decor
Many preppy rooms feature some sort of equestrian-themed design, often in the form of wall art. A picture depicting a horse race pops against white, beige, and navy wallpaper.
14. Show off That Paisley
Paisley is a preppy print that's been around for quite some time and doesn't appear to be going anywhere. Preps are about embracing tried and true decorating styles rather than experimenting with trends.
15. Go Wild for Ikat
Ikat is a beautiful print that is having a comeback. This dining nook is perfect for sipping coffee and cranking out some work. Also, when decorating a preppy space, don't forget pleated lampshades—pick a few favorite patterns to showcase.
16. Swoon Over Stripes
Preps will always have a soft spot for stripes. Furniture and decor such as striped sofas, pillows, rugs, and wall coverings are more than suitable in a preppy room.
17. Look to the Outdoors
Preps love gardening and spending time outdoors. This green-and-white botanical print wallpaper brings the outdoors inside to this breakfast room.
18. Transform a Basic Bathroom
Even your powder room can get a preppy upgrade. Swap out builder-grade sconces for scalloped alternatives, jazz up your drawer pulls with tassels, and place toothbrushes in a metal julep cup to elevate your countertop.
19. Add Childlike Wonder
Kids' rooms are excellent places to go bold with stripes and loud patterns. Here, a green and pink canopy turns a standard daybed into a dreamy spot to unwind from the day.

The walls of this boys' room from Brexton Cole Interiors are decorated with Ivy League banners and sports gear. A bold white, red, and green palette and traditional furnishings, lighting, and decor reinforce its preppy vibe.
27. Add an Indoor Putting Green
Nothing could make a room preppier than an indoor golf putting green, like this space from Kate Marker Interiors, designed for the golf fanatic who can't get enough.
28. Indulge in Excess
Maximalists love the preppy aesthetic because it keeps color and texture intact. Shazalynn Cavin Winfrey let her daughter's impressive book collection take center stage and even repeated the book covers' bright colors in details like the rug and lampshade.
29. Mix Old and New
This dining room by Fran Keenan is overflowing with eye-catching antiques. Antiques are only sometimes enough to pull off a preppy look. But when you combine historic pieces with more playful touches like floral wallpaper, bubblegum pink trim, and light green drapes with a scallop valance, they take on that quirky, collected, old-money look.

Soft pastels
Pinks
