What Is Getting Your Colors Done & Why It's Important
Color analysis is a process by which a trained color consultant examines the naturally occurring tones in your skin, hair and eyes and demonstrates to you what the best colors are for you to wear that are in harmony with your own color tones. This would apply to your clothing, jewelry, make-up and even hair color.
color analysis isn’t about the color itself, but the tone of the color and what that tone does to our natural coloring. You can wear blue, green, or red, but the blue, green or red that looks good on you might be very different from the one that compliments me, because we have different natural coloring and so suit different shades of those colors.
There are two main methods for color analysis
Seasonal color analysis
This method is probably the most widely known, whereby all color tones are divided into four categories which are named after the four seasons. So if for example, you have a friend who tells you they are an Autumn, what that means is that they suit colors from the ‘autumn’ palette, which is a mix of colors that are all warm tones, deeper colors and colors with a slight muted feel to them. Many color consultants are trained in seasonal analysis, and it is a relatively straightforward and easy to remember color system. This is the system we use in our color analysis consultations.
Tonal color analysis
In tonal color analysis, the idea of grouping colors into four seasonal categories is extended to 12 categories. These are labeled by the most dominant aspect of that color group, so for example our Autumn lady could be dubbed Warm and Deep in the tonal system. Most clients are given a dominant color direction (warm), followed by a secondary color direction (deep). This system is an in-depth color analysis method which advises on the dominant traits in an individual’s coloring.

What are the 3 Main Benefits of Getting Your Colors Done?
1. The main reason why color analysis works is because it makes an immediate visible difference to how someone looks and feels.
Imagine you’ve employed an interior designer who has created a beautiful room of soft blues and grays. Imagine then sticking a rug on the floor in mustard yellow – it would just jar with the soft cool color palette. The same applies to our clothes. If we wear a color that fights against our natural tones, the effect can look wrong or off, even if we can’t pinpoint why. But an outfit created from harmonious colors that suit the individual's own color palette creates a look that is authentic, harmonious and flattering.
In a color analysis consultation (whether it’s in person or online) you should be able to see some visible differences for yourself, that your harmonious palette works to make you look slimmer, younger, healthier, more energized, radiant and lifted, or that your eyes really stand out and sparkle. During the consultation you should also be able to see that a color that fights against your natural tones can work against you – clients often report they feel ‘washed out’, that they look tired, ill, puffy, dull, sallow, or older in the tones that don’t work for them.
2. When you see the effect of color for yourself, I think it really helps you to feel more confident.
Often clients who didn’t believe they could wear a bright color are wowed when they see how great that color looks. Or someone who has always felt comfortable in soft pastels is very happy to see how well they work. Sometimes a client will tell me it feels like they’ve come home, they feel empowered, or excited by their colors. Sometimes a client will say they used to wear their colors and had for some reason stopped and now feel excited to rediscover them. You should feel a real affinity with your color palette, like the true you is finally being expressed. As one of my clients recently put it "Knowing my colors has really changed things for me. I feel more feminine, more dynamic and in control. It has given me back the confidence I knew I had within me and multiplied it."
3. Another reason why color analysis is a sound investment is because it will save time and money.
Your friend with a swatch in her handbag will be able to ignore the colors in the store she already knows doesn’t suit her, and just focus on the ones that do – shopping is immediately quicker and easier. Putting outfits together from a single palette is also far quicker than trying to make colors work from the full spectrum. In a color analysis consultation, your stylist should talk you through all of the properties of your palette, and how to put colors together to create outfits as well as which neutrals would work well for you, which saves a lot of decision making time in front of the wardrobe doors in the morning.

What Is the Process of Getting Your Colors Done?
Let’s delve on the following process below:
Five Things to Consider Before Booking a Color Analysis Consultation
1. Think about whether you’d prefer a seasonal color analysis, or a tonal system.
When considering getting your colors done, it's important to think about whether a seasonal color analysis or a tonal system would suit you best. This will help you understand how different colors can enhance your natural features.
2. Consider if you want to visit a consultant locally for an in-person consultation or whether an online analysis session would suit you.
Deciding between an in-person or online consultation is crucial. If you prefer the convenience of staying at home, an online consultation may be the right choice for you. On the other hand, if you prefer a hands-on approach and a personal consultation, an in-person session might be more suitable.
3. Use google to search for a trained personal stylist, image consultant or for color analysis near you for an in-person session, or search for a trained online consultant.
Use the internet to search for trained personal stylists, image consultants, or color analysis consultants in your area. Read reviews, get recommendations, and choose a consultant whose style resonates with you.
4. When you’re at the consultation (either in person or online), feel free to make notes and perhaps have some questions ready to ask.
During your consultation, jot down notes and prepare questions to ask your consultant. This will help you better understand the process and the colors that suit you best.
5. Avoid any major purchases on clothes or makeup until after your consultation.
Hold off on buying new clothes or makeup until after your consultation. This will help you make informed choices based on your color palette.
The Process for an In-Person Color Analysis Consultation
1. Fill out a self-analysis form.
At the beginning of an in-person consultation, you typically fill out a self-analysis form, providing valuable information for your color analysis.
2. Get an intro to the personal color lesson.
The consultant will introduce you to the personal color lesson and the importance of color analysis in enhancing your natural features.
3. Color analysis with skin digitizer.
Using a skin digitizer, the consultant will analyze your skin tone to determine the colors that complement your complexion.
4. Color analysis with drapes.
Through draping, the consultant will identify colors that enhance your features and make recommendations for your color palette.
5. The consultant analyzes your hue, value, and undertone to find your color spectrum, as well as your best, second-best, and worst palette.
A consultant will analyze your hue, value, and undertone to pinpoint your color spectrum and create a personalized palette tailored to you.
6. Get a makeup recommendation (optional).
If you wish, the consultant can provide makeup recommendations based on your color analysis. You can also bring your makeup for analysis.
7. Receive a detailed result sheet.
After the consultation, you'll receive a detailed result sheet outlining your color palette, making it easier to choose outfits, do your makeup, and shop.
How Do You Know What Colors Look Good on You?
Differentiate between flattering and unflattering colors.
Flattering colors enhance your facial features and make your skin appear radiant, while unflattering colors can wash out your skin tone and make it look dull.
Consider different beauty standards.
Since beauty standards vary, consultants focus on avoiding the worst colors and selecting those that enhance your features.
Choose the right makeup colors.
For makeup, stick to cooler tones if you're a winter or summer palette, and opt for warmer colors if you're a spring or autumn palette.
Online Consultation Process
Submit photos for analysis.
During an online consultation, you'll be asked to submit headshot photos without makeup for color analysis.
Receive your color analysis online.
Your consultant will conduct the color analysis in advance and present the results during the online session, explaining your palette and providing a fabric swatch pack.
How Much Does It Cost to Have Your Colors Done?
Each consultant may charge different prices. Most prices are:
$245
Personal Color Analysis for One
80 minutes
$450
Personal Color Analysis for 2 People
2 hours
$550
Group Analysis for 3 People
2.5 hours
Overall, the average price range of in-person color analysis runs from $100 to $600, more or less, depending on the consultant, time, and number of people in a session.
Factors Affecting the Cost of Color Analysis
The cost of a color analysis can vary widely based on several factors. Understanding these can help you navigate your options and choose a service that fits your needs and budget.
1. Type of Service
In-Person Consultations: Typically the most expensive option, in-person color analysis provides hands-on experience with a professional stylist or color consultant. Prices can range from $200 to $800, depending on the consultant’s experience and reputation.
Online Analysis: With advances in technology, online color analysis services have become popular. These services may use questionnaires, photos, and software to determine your color season at a lower cost, generally between $100 and $300.
Group Sessions: Some consultants offer group rates, allowing you to receive a color analysis with friends at a discounted rate per person.
2. Consultant’s Expertise and Location
The expertise of the color analyst and their geographic location significantly affect the cost. Renowned consultants in major cities tend to charge more due to their high demand and the cost of living in metropolitan areas.
3. Depth of Analysis
Some color analysis sessions offer a basic overview of your color season, while others provide an in-depth analysis that includes a personalized color palette, makeup recommendations, and a style consultation. The more comprehensive the service, the higher the cost.
4. Additional Services
Many color consultants offer additional services such as wardrobe audits, personal shopping, and style consultations. These add-ons can increase the overall cost but provide a more complete style transformation.
What You Get for Your Money
Investing in a color analysis goes beyond discovering your best colors. Here’s what you can typically expect from a session:
Personalized Color Palette
A set of colors tailored to enhance your natural coloring.
Style Recommendations
Advice on clothing styles and patterns that complement your body type and personal style.
Makeup and Hair Color Suggestions
Recommendations on makeup shades and hair colors that align with your color season.
Confidence Boost
Knowing your colors can increase confidence in your style choices, leading to a more cohesive and flattering wardrobe.
How Long Does a Color Analysis Take?
The duration of a color analysis session can vary but typically takes around 2 to 3 hours. The process involves determining your color undertones, identifying the season you fall into, and finding the colors that best suit you. The initial assessment can take anywhere from 45 to 90 minutes, with the entire draping process lasting a minimum of 2 to 3 hours. It is crucial to allow sufficient time for a thorough evaluation of your coloring and the identification of your best colors during the consultation.

How to Get ChatGPT to Do Color Analysis?
The following are the recommended steps for conducting a color analysis using AI:
1. Take a selfie with natural lighting.
For accurate results, avoid wearing makeup. When analyzing your colors, natural light is the best way to determine your true skin, eye, and hair color. Any artificial lighting can distort your coloring.
2. Using an editing program.
Mark your selfie with a color that you believe matches your natural skin tone. Next, note the color code for your skin tone. This code can be used to describe your facial skin tone, for example, EABFAC.
3. Repeat the previous step for your eye and hair color.
This process helps to get a comprehensive understanding of your personal color palette.
4. Input the color codes into ChatGPT.
For instance, type "Hi, my skin tone is EABFAC, my eyes are #412821, and my hair is #272622. What color outfits would complement my features?" ChatGPT will process the information and provide recommendations.
ChatGPT will respond with suggestions for colors that match your complexion, eye, and hair color. It might suggest earthy tones, warm neutrals, deep jewel tones, rich shades of red, and warm purple hues.
Artificial Intelligence Limitations
Keep in mind that AI has its limitations. While it can provide accurate information based on the data you input, it's not a definitive answer. AI can't replace the human eye and the nuances it can pick up on.
Although ChatGPT can provide general guidance on colors that would complement your features, it might not offer detailed and personalized advice. For a specific color analysis, you may still need the human touch of a professional in color analysis.
It is important to note that AI is a tool that provides information based on the data you input. It's a helpful resource, but it shouldn't be the only source for making color decisions. Always trust your instincts and personal preferences when it comes to choosing colors that make you feel confident and comfortable.
Is Getting Your Colors Done Worth It?
If you’re interested in fashion or makeup, I do think that a lot of what color analysis tells you, you might already know by instinct. Before this, I knew very light and bright colors, like pastels, suited me the least. I knew that high-contrast and saturated colors worked perfectly for me. So the analysis just confirmed these facts.
One very important thing to mention is that color analysis helped me reduce the amount of things I buy because it forced me to think twice before buying.
This was not only true because of the rules but also because it made me think of the color story in my own closet. When I saw something I loved, instead of immediately buying it, I thought of how that particular item would work with the rest of my closet, what I could wear it with, and how much the color worked for me.
If you have issues pinpointing what colors suit you and feel like what you’re wearing doesn’t work, color analysis might help you a lot. It might also help you create a capsule wardrobe or reduce unnecessary shopping. If these things apply to you, give color analysis a shot!
