Why Is Color Coordination in Clothing So Important?
Color coordination in clothing influences how we express ourselves and our style. Color combinations matter because they create visual harmony that can boost our confidence. On the other hand, mismatched colors can clash and diminish an outfit's appeal.
Color Combinations Shape First Impressions
People often value first impressions. The color coordination of your clothing gives initial clues about what kind of person you are. Good color combinations can create an impression of reliability and thoughtfulness, while a poor color combination might leave a negative impression.
Color Combinations Are a Way to Express Yourself
Colors can be a powerful tool for expressing your personality, emotional state, and thoughts. Bright colors convey energy and joy, while neutral tones can create a calm and professional impression. Color choices can communicate your world and your thoughts to others.
Color Combinations Emphasize Body Type
The proper color coordination can make your body type more appealing. For example, you can choose slim colors or emphasize certain body areas. Knowing which colors will make which areas more prominent can help you feel happier and more confident in your clothes.
Color Combinations Strengthen Fashion Statements
For fashion interests, colors can strengthen your style and fashion statements. By using colors wisely, you can make your style more striking and unique. In fashion, color coordination is used to stand out with bold and creative combinations.
The Spiritual and Emotional Effects of Color Combinations
Colors impact mood and emotional state. For instance, blue creates a sense of calm and tranquility, while red can evoke passion and energy. Color choices can reflect how you feel and want to appear to others.

Using the Clothing Color Wheel for Perfect Color Matching
The color wheel is a visual representation of colors arranged in a circular format. It helps people to understand how colors relate to each other and how they can be combined to create harmonious color schemes. The modern color wheel, as we know it today, was developed by Sir Isaac Newton in the 17th century. He arranged the colors in a circle and placed the primary colors at equal distances.
Over time, artists, scientists, and designers have refined and expanded it to create color wheels for outfits. Understanding the clothing color wheel is a must to take your fashion game to the next level.
Let’s Talk About Color Families
Like families, colors have different types that fall under the same category. The three main types of colors, each with unique characteristics, are:
Primary
Secondary
Tertiary
Primary Colors
First up are primary colors. They’re the building blocks of every other color on the wheel, and without them, we wouldn’t have the beautiful spectrum of hues we know and love.
These are the OG colors:
Red
Yellow
Blue
Secondary Colors
These are created by mixing two primary colors. They’re vibrant and playful, perfect for adding color to your look.
The secondary colors are:
Green
Orange
Purple
Tertiary Colors
Tertiary colors are more complex. These are created by mixing a primary color with a secondary color. Think deep magenta or bright chartreuse. These colors are for the bold and adventurous!
Warm Colors Vs. Cool Colors
Besides, people also divided colors by temperature:
Warm Colors
They’re perfect for making a statement and showing off your confidence. Warm colors are the fiery hues that make you feel alive:
Red
Orange
Yellow
Cool Colors
They give a peaceful vibe and are perfect for a more subdued look. These cool colors are calm and collected:
Blue
Green
Purple
Neutral Colors
Neutral colors are the backbone of any wardrobe. They’re like the glue that holds your outfits together. These colors are versatile and can be paired with any other color on the wheel:
Black
White
Gray
Brown
Color-Matching Techniques That Will Change Your Fashion Game
So, how do you use the color wheel to create unique outfits? Look for colors that are next to each other or opposite each other on the wheel. These colors will complement each other and create a cohesive look.
Complementary Colors
Complementary colors are opposites on the wheel. When paired together, they create striking looks that pop.
For example, combine bright red with a cool mint green for a fresh look.
Analogous Colors
Analogous colors are located next to each other on the wheel. These colors are very similar and create serene, pleasing-to-the-eye looks.
For example, they pair shades of blue with green for a calming effect.
Triadic Colors
Triadic colors are three colors spaced evenly on the wheel. This color combination creates high-contrast looks that are sure to stand out. To tone down the vibrant color scheme, use one color for most of your outfit and incorporate the others as accents.
For example, a bright yellow can be paired with deep purple and magenta for a fun look.

How To Mix and Match With the Clothing Color Wheel
Start With Analogous Colors for Subtle Combinations
Analogous colors sit next to one another on the color wheel and are a natural choice when creating color combinations. They complement one another because they share a common hue, making them easy to mix and match. When incorporating new colors into your wardrobe, find a color that feels safe—light blue.
On the color wheel, blue falls between teal and blue-violet. If you feel comfortable with light blue, add a teal or blue-violet for a subtle, two-color palette. You can also play with different shades and tones of these colors to create depth in your outfits.
Embrace Complementary Colors for Bold Outfits
Complementary colors are opposite on the color wheel and can create a beautiful power clash. Think fuchsia and chartreuse or burgundy and forest green. When you make bold color choices, both colors stand out.
Use Accessories to Experiment with Colors
You don’t have to worry about matching your accessories to create a cohesive look. Unless you're going for a complete monochrome look, don’t stress about ‘matching’ your belt to your handbag and shoes. When it comes to color combinations, these smaller accessories are a great place to experiment with bright colors.
Mix Neutral Colors for a Versatile Style
Neutral colors are an excellent base for working with brighter colors, but they can also work together. Color mixing isn't just about bold colors. These colors almost always pair well, so don't be afraid to wear black pants with brown shoes with neutrals like:
Brown
Black
Navy blue
White
Use Denim as a Neutral Color
Consider denim a neutral color; you can mix it with any other color (including blue), and it will look great. This also means you can combine pieces of denim. The easiest way to do it is with shades of denim that are similar but different enough that your look won't be too matchy.
Try pairing mid-wash jeans with a light-wash denim shirt or dark-wash jeans with a mid-wash denim jacket.
Organize Your Closet by Color for Easy Outfits
Organizing your closet by color will simplify the process of choosing an outfit. Color-coordinating your closet will make finding exactly what you’re looking for easier and help you create new color combinations.
Grab the piece you want to wear and hold it next to the other items in your closet; you’ll see which color families work best with your primary color.

What Is the 3-Color Outfit Rule?
The three-color outfit rule suggests that wearing three distinct colors simultaneously creates a balanced look. The first step to applying this rule involves selecting a dominant color, followed by a secondary color and an accent shade.
For example, in a look featuring a black skirt, a white blouse, and a red cardigan, black acts as the outfit’s neutral base, while the other colors bring visual interest to the look.
Black and White Are Neutrals
While the three-color rule is straightforward, it’s also important to remember that black and white are neutrals. This means they can be added to a look featuring three colors without disrupting the outfit’s organization. They can help create a more balanced appearance.
For instance, if you incorporated a striped print into the previous example and the print featured black, white, and red, the look would be even more cohesive. That’s because the black and white would help ground the outfit, while the red would still serve as an accent color.
Consider Prints with Caution
When applying the three-color rule to outfits that include prints, analyze the look closely. In short, you don’t want to go overboard on color and end up with overwhelming hues.
Instead, choose prints with a maximum of three colors, then use the palette within the print to style the rest of your outfit. This will make your look far more polished and organized.
Prioritize Color Proportions
While the three-color rule suggests using three colors within an outfit, it doesn’t mean all three should be used equally. Doing so can create a jarring look that lacks visual interest. Instead, aim for a more asymmetric approach that’s naturally pleasing to the eye. One way to do this is to consider the “golden ratio” when organizing the colors within your outfit. The golden ratio suggests that a naturally pleasing composition will consist of approximately:
60% of one element
30% of another
10% of a third element
When applying this to the three-color rule, all of these colors should be complementary to each other, so aim to use:
One color (the dominant hue) to make up most of your outfit
Introduce a second color that should take up roughly a third of your look
Offer a third accent color that will provide pops of visual interest.
Understand Color Theory
Now that you know to stick to three critical colors for each outfit, which colors exactly? Traditionally, color theory has taught us that analogous and complementary colors are two ways to create harmonious palettes. However, other aesthetically inclined individuals have developed their approaches in recent years. Take founder and creative director of Tibi and social media personality Amy Smilovic, who wrote a book on being pragmatic about how we dress, a core tenet offering its take on color theory.
Put simply, Smilovic uses four rings of color—at the center is black, which, as discussed above, doesn’t count in the 3 color rule; ring two is made up of neutrals, ring three is a diffusion of these neutrals; ring four consists of those bright and bold colors. As dictated by each ring’s proportions, the further you veer from the center, the less the color should feature in a look.
Take Your Complexion into Account
Your skin tone can act as a hue into a broader look when exposed, depending on the level of coverage your outfit provides (or, instead, doesn’t). This is particularly the case within a monochromatic or neutral-heavy look, where your skin tone supports a tonal look. To achieve the most visually appealing appearance, play around with the level of skin exposure within a look— the typical rule of thumb is that if your top half is overly exposing, your bottom half should provide more coverage and vice versa.
Push your sleeves up, wear jeans or trousers that crop at the ankle, look to a plunged neckline, and see how this impacts the overarching tones within your outfit. Similarly, hair and makeup can also count as your third color—try styling your hair down, then up, to see how this impacts the overarching tones within your outfit, or wear a pop of color on your lip instead of a brightly colored accessory.
Don’t Forget About Accessories
Jewelry and hardware can provide dimension and points of interest to your look while still adhering to the principles of the three-color rule. Much like the presence of black or white pieces within an outfit, cool or warm metals in jewelry and hardware also work as neutral additions to a look.
57 Best Clothing Color Combinations
1. Sage Green and Tan
Sage green and tan are the perfect color combo for fall. This pairing is subtle yet attractive, making it an excellent option for the office. A sage green blazer would look great over a tan blouse, and you can style the look with matching tan accessories.
2. Light Blue and Navy Blue
If you want to create a cool-toned color scheme, incorporating navy blue and light blue into the same outfit is a classic way to do so. Wearing a light blue shirt or blouse under a navy blue blazer is a great choice to balance light and dark. Alternatively, you can use one color to accent the other.
For example, you could wear a navy tie with a light blue shirt or do the same but reverse the colors.
3. Red and Yellow
Red and yellow can be captivating, but creating them carefully is essential. If combined haphazardly, red and yellow might make you look like Ronald McDonald! To avoid that look, ensure that either the red or the yellow piece is part of a pattern.
Pro tips: Navy stripes on the red skirt help temper the hot colors of the red/yellow combination.
4. Purple and Charcoal Gray
This charming look features shades of plum and darker shades of purple. It’s an excellent choice for a subdued palette for colder months, and of course, it’s always fun to experiment.
So, to lighten up the look, try going for a lighter shade of purple and/or adding some white.
5. Seal Brown and Tan
Outfits made up mostly or entirely of neutrals don’t have to be dull! Seal brown, in particular, is an excellent alternative to black if you want something a little lighter and a little warmer. As you can see in the picture, combining seal brown with tan is a great way to bring out the darker color’s warmth.
Mix a seal brown and tan outfit with a bit of white to lighten the overall look while keeping a neutral palette. The white shirt in the picture is an excellent example of how to do this well.
6. Cerulean and Neon Green
This bright, dramatic color combination might not be suitable for more formal looks, but it’s great for making a statement. Try incorporating these colors into activewear or adding them in small doses to tamer outfits.
Add hints of neon green to a mostly cerulean outfit if you want something a little less bold. Neon green shoes can pop against a cerulean shirt and jeans!
7. Red and Cyan
Though red and cyan aren’t complementary colors, they are connected: if you stare at a cyan picture and then shut your eyes, the afterimage will be red. And if you combine them in an outfit, each makes the other pop.
Since red is a lot more common in clothing than cyan is, the easiest way to combine these two is to add cyan accessories to a primarily red outfit. And if you can find a dress or a shirt with a red and cyan pattern, that’s a great way to stand out, too.
8. Sky Blue and Charcoal Gray
Regardless of the shade, blue and gray work well together. This is especially true of shades of blue and shades of cool gray. From a practical standpoint, charcoal gray is a great choice to pair with sky blue. This deep and dignified gray is a standard color for blazers, suit jackets, and pants.
As you can see in the picture, the charcoal/sky blue combination also looks excellent, with hints of warmer neutrals like tan. When used sparingly, warm, neutral accessories can bring an outfit together.
9. Medium Pink and Red
You might be surprised to see this combination on the list. After all, pink and red together often conjure up Valentine’s Day images. But when used judiciously, this combination can add rosy warmth to an outfit. As you can see in the picture, one way to combine them is to separate them with a darker, cooler color like teal.
Temper this high-energy combination by adding black, cool white, or a neutral. If you like this combination but want to use it more subtly, try combining red nail polish with a pink dress (or vice versa).
10. Soft Mauve-Gray and Olive
Pink and green can quickly become a garish combination. But if you combine a soft pink with a muted olive, you can use this pleasing contrast when it’s smooth enough—the pale mauve functions almost like a neutral. And when muted enough, olive does the same.
This combination is a good choice if you want an outfit that’s a bit brighter than an all-neutral color scheme but more muted than louder color combinations.
11. Hunter-Green and Medium Brown
This is one of the classic combinations on the list. One of the best ways to wear it is by pairing medium-brown accessories (especially leather) with a hunter-green dress, sweater, jacket, etc. A hunter-green blazer is also a striking alternative to a navy blazer. And like navy, it pairs well with shades of brown, tan, gray, and other neutrals.
Try wearing a hunter-green blazer with jeans and medium-brown shoes for a casual look that’s just a little dressed up.
12. Teal and Navy Blue
Sometimes, pairing similar colors results in a striking look. That’s the case with navy blue and teal. Teal is a deep blue-green pairing nicely with the deep blue navy. Since both colors are dark, incorporating lighter shades is a good idea to create a balance.
Try putting together an outfit with a gradient of color. The picture shows this: the model wears a dark navy blue top, while her scarf includes teal, several shades of lighter blue-green, and white.
13. Electric Purple and Black
If you want a modern look that draws the eye, try incorporating electric purple into your next outfit! Electric purple can create dramatically different moods depending on what you pair it with. For instance, it pops against turquoise. Most people prefer a more balanced look, though, and black is an excellent color to temper electric purple’s palpable energy.
As you can see in the photo, black pants can make even an electric purple blazer look businesslike. But if you want a quieter look, add hints of purple to a primarily black outfit.
14. Soft Neon Green and Soft Neon Yellow
If you like outfits with multiple shades of neon but want to tone it down, try something like the outfit in the photo. As you can see, the yellow and green fall somewhere between a neon and a pastel. Of course, this isn’t a combination you’ll likely see in formalwear. But if you’re piecing together a high-energy gym outfit, this distinctive combination can help keep you motivated! If you want something higher contrast, try incorporating these colors into a primarily black or dark gray outfit.
15. Pink and Turquoise
As you can see in the picture, this distinctive color combo is perfect for creating an 80s-inspired workout outfit. But if this look isn’t quite your style, you can pair these colors more understatedly. One of the best ways to do that is by pairing genuine turquoise jewelry with a pink top or dress. Even a tiny turquoise pendant creates a memorable contrast against a pink top.
If you can find a pink and turquoise-patterned accessory (like a belt or clutch), this combination is stunning against a mostly black outfit.
16. Black and White
No list of color combinations would be complete without a mention of black and white. There are seemingly endless ways to pair these two colors. You can choose a patterned shirt or dress for a flashier look. Or, if you prefer something more understated, try a white shirt under a black and white pinstriped blazer. It can be fun to experiment with black-and-white combinations, and you can create different moods depending on the exact shades of each.
Warm whites and blacks help create a vintage-inspired aesthetic, while cooler shades add a modern edge to any look.
17. Bright Blue and Soft Gray
If you like the look of very bright colors but want to pair them with something a little quieter, bright blue and soft gray are ideal. As you can see in the picture, this combination is ideal for activewear or athleisure: pairing a bright blue hoodie with gray sweatpants is easy. You can incorporate white accents or accessories if you’re going for a lighter and brighter overall look.
18. Pastel Blue and Yellow-Orange
Choosing a warm earth tone as a neutral is an ideal way to give business casual a modern edge. As you can see, yellow pants pair well with a soft blue shirt. If you want to take this intriguing combination out of the office, pair these yellow accessories with a pastel blue dress or top:
Belts
Shoes
Purses
Since this yellow-orange shade essentially works as a neutral, it looks nice alongside various shades of brown or tan.
19. Medium Green and White
This striking combination often looks almost regal. But it’s also at home in more casual contexts. As you can see in the picture, these two colors make quite a statement when combined in a pattern. If you want to separate these two high-contrast colors, you can still create a memorable outfit: combine a green top with white pants or vice versa.
You can dress up this look with jewelry, too. Choose silver jewelry for a modern look, or go with gold if you’d prefer a classic aesthetic.
20. Pale Lilac and Medium Lavender
This unique double-purple combination comes close to being primarily monochromatic. However, lilac and lavender have different undertones. Lilac has a pinkish hue, while lavender has more pungent blue undertones. At any rate, these colors look nice together, and you can use accessories to shift the outfit's mood.
If you’re going for a more energetic look, add a bright green hat (or other accessory), as shown in the picture. If you’re after a more understated look, black or dark gray accessories also go well with lilac and lavender.
21. Orange and White
Orange and white are dynamic combinations found in several logos and designs. It’s pretty standard to see an orange hoodie with white lettering (or a white hoodie with orange lettering). But if you want a unique look, pair white pants with an orange top! Of course, this combination is fun to play with.
Try pairing white sunglasses and a white purse with an orange sundress. An orange and white patterned shirt is also a great way to turn heads!
22. Magenta and Yellow
If you’re looking for a head-turning combination of colors, magenta and yellow are great choices. This is an excellent combination for beachwear or activewear, like cerulean and neon green. But for slightly more formal occasions, wearing a pink dress with a yellow purse (or vice versa) is a great way to stand out. Incorporating smaller accessories can work for a pop of color that’s a bit more subtle.
For example, you could wear magenta shoes with a yellow shirt. To balance out the warmth of this look, you can break up the color scheme with some black or dark gray.
23. Turquoise and Purple
While turquoise and purple are technically cool colors, the combination is very high-energy. Try wearing a pattern of the two for a vintage look, or use a purple or turquoise accessory (like the hat shown in the picture) to bring out this striking contrast in a gentler way. As mentioned earlier, turquoise jewelry is a great way to use this combination. A turquoise pendant, earrings, or ring will pop against a predominantly purple outfit.
24. Navy Blue and Tan
Navy blue and tan are classic combinations on the list. Navy blue works nicely with just about any neutral, but the warmth of tan creates an incredibly balanced look. As you can see in the pictured outfit, tan leather accessories (belts, shoes, and purses) are an easy way to bring this look together.
And if you’re currently shopping for new looks, this is a relatively easy one to create. Navy blue is a standard color for almost every clothing item, and you can also easily find tan leather accessories. Plus, navy and tan are versatile combinations that work well with casual and formal wear.
25. Golden Yellow and Medium Blue
Suppose you like the energy of yellow but prefer something closer to a jewel tone. A golden shade of yellow like the one pictured is a great choice. It pairs well with medium and even denim blue, so this look works well for casual outfits.
Of course, if you like patterns, shirts or dresses that use this combination are an excellent way to stand out. If you like the contrast in the picture but want to tone it down slightly, shades of mustard yellow can be a good substitute for golden yellow. Plus, mustard yellow is a familiar color for leather accessories like purses and belts.
26. Dark Green and Gray
Once the weather turns cooler, more people turn to darker, cooler colors. For a more understated combination, gray and green are a good choice. Pair dark green with dark charcoal to create a palette that verges on the monochromatic. Try pairing lighter gray with dark green for higher contrast, as shown in the picture.
Consider wearing a dark green tie with a gray suit for slightly more formal occasions. Try pairing it with a cool white shirt to balance out this darker combination.
27. Medium Blue and Chocolate Brown
As we’ve seen, blue and brown seem to pair well together regardless of shade—chocolate brown and lighter blue form a dignified pairing that works well with formal looks. As you can see in the photo, a medium-blue tie with a chocolate-brown blazer looks great.
If you want to use this contrast subtly, chocolate brown leather accessories also make a statement alongside blue shirts, dresses, or pants.
28. Rose Pink and Periwinkle
Sometimes, pairing multiple soft colors is a great choice. Palettes like this create dreamy, modern color schemes that are ideal if you want to stand out while still making a calming mixture of colors. If you want a color combination that evokes memories of spring, a combination of periwinkle and rose pink is an excellent choice.
If you can find periwinkle boots like those shown in the picture, you can create an unusual and memorable outfit. Of course, you can always incorporate these soft colors into an outfit while sticking to more neutral-colored shoes and other accessories.
29. Yellow-Orange and Burnt Orange
The seasons can be a great inspiration when it comes to clothing. For those seeking a decidedly autumnal palette, the warm combination of yellow-orange and burnt orange is a great choice. Burnt orange is a standard color for coats and even tops, so this combination is more accessible to create than you might think.
Since yellow-orange and burnt orange pair beautifully with denim, this combination lends to casual looks. Try a burnt-orange jacket, a yellow-orange scarf, and blue denim jeans.
30. Red and White
For those looking for classic combinations, red and white is fantastic! From a practical standpoint, it’s also easy to find. Especially in autumn, red and white flannels are easy to find. And if you like the plaid look but want something a bit dressier, gingham collared shirts like the one shown in the picture are a great alternative. As you likely already know, red and white also look great with navy blue.
Try incorporating subtle navy blue accents if you like this combination but don’t want to look like a Fourth of July parade. Even a red and white flannel with a few navy stripes is a great way to do this.
31. Maroon and Gray
For a combination that offers plenty of contrast but remains muted, maroon and gray are a great choice. Many pieces of clothing also provide a pattern contrast, as you’ll often see heathered gray paired with solid maroon. You can usually find this combination in baseball-style shirts like the one in the picture. And like many neutral/non-neutral combinations on the list, this one is also an excellent choice for formal clothing.
Try pairing a gray blazer with a white shirt and maroon tie.
32. Magenta and Charcoal
If you like the general idea of maroon and gray but want something brighter, try pairing magenta with charcoal! This is one of the many combinations on the list that’s great for activewear. A charcoal gray hoodie and/or leggings can pop against bright magenta shoes.
And if you can find it, primarily gray activewear with a few magenta accents is also a good choice. You can even incorporate something as simple as magenta socks into a mostly charcoal outfit to sprinkle in a little of this memorable contrast.
33. Yellow and Warm Gray
Pantone’s joint Color of the Year for 2021 best represents this combination. The color authority chose Ultimate Gray, a warm gray shade, with Illuminating, an energetic yellow shade. As you can see in the photo, the gray/yellow combination is one you can easily create with accessories. You can easily add yellow to a predominantly gray outfit and capitalize on this dynamic color trend like:
Headphones
Shoes
Socks
Scarves
Purses
34. Orange and Black
This combination makes you think of Halloween. But when used carefully, it has plenty of applications outside the spooky holiday. As you can see in the photo, this combo is excellent for activewear, as an orange jacket is easy enough to pair with black pants. Plus, bright orange offers ample visibility.
35. Charcoal Gray and White
Charcoal gray appears several times in our list, but that’s no coincidence: This rich and memorable color pairs well with bright colors, neutrals, and almost everything in between. If you like the contrast of black and white but want something a little less stark, consider putting together an outfit mostly in charcoal and white.
As you can see, this makes an excellent contrast for activewear, but it’s also versatile enough for formal and casual outfits.
36. Pale Coral and Tan
Coral is a great color for spring and summer looks, and a paler shade of coral is an excellent choice if you want to tone down the intensity. Like many summery colors, coral pairs nicely with tan. Combining it with a tan blazer is a great way to go. A coral shirt also goes well with tan or khaki pants for less formal occasions. A pale coral sundress looks excellent with tan or light brown shoes and accessories!
37. Yellow and White
If you want a light, cheerful color combination, try incorporating yellow and white into your next outfit! Pairing a yellow jacket with a white shirt, as shown in the picture, is a good choice. But if you prefer patterns, yellow and white are easy to find. From stripes to polka dots, yellow and white shirts and blouses can be abundant.
Like many looks on the list, this one can be used more subtly, too. You can combine yellow accessories with a mostly-white outfit or white accessories with a primarily yellow outfit for a memorable, summer-inspired look.
38. Sherbet Orange and Cool Gray
We’ve mentioned burnt orange and bright orange thus far, but the pastel energy of sherbet orange can be an asset to your wardrobe when used well. It has a high-energy, summery vibe when paired with white, but mixing it with cool gray grounds creates a more balanced look.
As you can see, gray and sherbet orange make an excellent activewear combination. Cool shades of gray provide the ideal counterbalance to orange’s vibrant energy.
39. Clay Red and Cerulean
Red and blue are consistently striking. But if bright red and cerulean form a combination that’s a little loud for your taste, the muted nature of clay red might work. Since clay red is close to being neutral, you might be able to find clay-red coats like the one in the picture.
There are plenty of different ways to use this color combination, though. For a pop of color, try pairing a clay-red shirt with a cerulean tie!
40. Pink and Warm Black
Pink and black are classic color combinations. While hot pink and stark black can look a little harsh (though it’s a common choice in activewear!), soft pink and warm black are often easier on the eyes. Outfits like the one in the picture (where one of these colors makes up most of the outfit and the other is an accessory) are a great way to wear this combination. But a pink and black patterned top is also a great way to go if you like patterns.
41. Sky Blue and Royal Blue
Earlier, we mentioned a combination of light blue and navy. If you like the blue-on-blue look but want something a little brighter, try royal blue and sky blue. This is an excellent look for beachwear and casual summer outfits.
A sky blue shirt with a royal blue bow tie or necktie is a fabulous high-energy look for more formal occasions. It’s an excellent way to add color against neutral-colored pants or a blazer.
42. Taupe and White
Neutral-on-neutral looks might be subdued compared to other combinations on the list, but they don’t have to be boring! Taupe is a quintessential autumn color with just enough warmth. And while it looks nice with jewel tones, it’s versatile enough to look great with white, too. Combining a taupe cardigan with a white shirt like the model in the picture is a great way to wear this look.
Thanks to this color scheme’s all-neutral nature, you can add a bright accessory for a pop of color if you wish!
43. Blue-Green and Coral
For a look that’s perfect for spring and summer, try combining blue-green and coral! As you can see in the photo, adding a small burst of coral to a primarily cool color scheme is a great way to balance out an outfit. Like other combinations on the list, this one works well when a color gradient is involved. Coral looks lovely in an outfit incorporating blue, green, and various colors. And, of course, incorporating white is a relatively simple way to lighten up the look.
44. Red and Taupe
Earlier, we mentioned the versatility of taupe in a wardrobe. While this color pairs well with other neutrals, pairing it with red can create a decidedly lively look. Depending on your preferences, you can tweak this combination in several ways.
Try warm taupe and clay red for a more autumnal look, or create some contrast by combining cool taupe with fiery red.
45. Blush Pink and White
The combination of blush pink and white is perfect for creating a delicate, flowery aesthetic. As you can see in the photo, this combination works beautifully when combined in layers. You might also want to try a blush pink top with white shorts, pants, or a skirt.
You can ground this combination with gray or black or keep the dreamy look.
46. Yellow and Deep Sky Blue
The combination of yellow and blue can create various energies depending on the shade of each. As you can see in the photo, combining a few shades of yellow with deep sky blue is undoubtedly an option.
Try using intense sunny yellow for a bold contrast or soft yellow for an airier look. It also combines various shades of sky blue with a single shade of yellow. If you like to get creative with combining colors, this is a great place to start!
47. Burnt Orange and Hunter Green
This is an excellent choice if you’re looking for more autumn-inspired combinations. This fashion-forward combination looks excellent with burnt orange leather, as shown in the picture, but any material works.
Try pairing a burnt orange top with hunter-green pants. Or, if you prefer, mix burnt-orange accessories with an outfit that’s primarily hunter-green.
48. Slate Blue and Warm White
Navy blue and charcoal gray are staples in the fashion world. And if you can’t choose between the two, you can always go for the happy medium: slate blue. This gray-tinged blue looks outstanding alongside warm, vintage-inspired whites.
But you don’t have to stop here! Slate blue often functions as a neutral that can be used alongside a whole host of other colors. Mix it with high-energy shades like red or orange for a higher-energy look.
49. Red and Mint Green
This color combination probably sounds weird if you haven’t seen it in action. But as you can see in the picture, a thoughtful combination of red and mint green can create a memorable outfit. Of course, depending on the exact shades used, this juxtaposition may prove a little jarring.
Try incorporating different shades of white to balance out the overall look. For a muted aesthetic, go for dusty or clay-like reds instead of bright reds.
50. Black and Gray
Last on our list is another classic: gray and black. This wintery combo is great for colder months. It’s also pretty easy to accomplish, as most of us have black and gray in our closets. Pairing a gray coat with black pants is a great option.
Pairing black accessories with a predominantly gray outfit is also a good idea. Of course, if you want a more memorable look, go for a shirt with an interesting pattern of black and gray.
51. Pink and Green
Green and pink are classic combinations. The green offers an earthy tone that perfectly balances the pink, which gives floral hints. Wear a pink top with green bottoms to look like a rose.
52. Green and Blue
The darker tones complement each other well because blue is one of the primary colors used to make green (the other is yellow). Pair it with a white shoe to add a lighter tone.
53. Pink and Red
Pink and red aren’t color combinations; they are only for Valentine's Day. A red crocheted sweater is fashionable over pink metallic pants.
54. Yellow and Pink
Wearing the primary color yellow with a softer color like pink is also a great way to color block. You can incorporate prints to give the outfit more dimension.
55. Purple and Orange
Purple is also a great complement to a bright orange. The outfit photographed above pairs a purple turtleneck with an orange leather coat, playing with colors and textures.
56. Pink and Blue
Pink and blue go together:
Cotton candy
A beautiful sunset
Nurseries
Why couldn't this same combination be applied to clothes? We're fans of how this look blends the feminine and masculine.
57. Gray and Burgundy
Burgundy is a deep red that's perfect for fall and winter. Pair it with a light, neutral tone like gray to balance its richness. Whether you choose a heathered gray or a crisp, solid version, the two colors create an elegant look suitable for everything from the office to holiday gatherings.
How To Choose a Color Combination for a Dress?
Sticking within a color family is a good starting point when selecting colors for your dress. Blending different shades of the same color is a foolproof way to create a visually appealing outfit. But this approach can get boring quickly. Remember complementary colors? These colors are located across from each other on the color wheel. For instance:
Red and green
Violet and yellow
Blue and orange
Play around with a combination of these colors; they will look great together. Experimenting with layered textures in similar color families will add depth to your look. This technique allows a person to express their style using mixed textures. The sensations in the materials make the whole ensemble more interesting.
Try the Ombre Test for Your Dress Color Combination
Ombre is taking over everything from hairstyles and cakes to nail art and décor, and not to forget, outfits. Party-wear outfits, bridesmaid dresses, or simple jeans and tops in ombre can turn heads. Diminishing shades of the same color in ascending or descending order works excellent.
If you are sporting separates, you must bring them together with the top, bottom, shoes, and accessories in sync. Wear ombre outfits for your Christmas or winter parties; they also go perfectly with the theme and the weather.
Monochrome Looks are the New Color Combinations
It seems like a no-brainer because it’s just one color in the same shade for the outfit. However, this color coordination is the hardest to pull off for obvious reasons. The excellent news is that monochromatic looks have caught up and are no longer considered weird. Start with comfortable, neutral colors like:
Grays
Blues
Whites
Blacks
Then progress to pastel undertones. Monochrome looks can be customized depending on the season or occasion. If it’s a formal setting, stick to neutrals, blues, or whites; otherwise, explore pastels, yellows, or even brighter shades.
One Thing at a Time and Let Your Dress Print Shine
Let the print take over if it’s a printed or patterned outfit. Prints and patterns are combinations of one or more colors, so you must leave it at that. Keep the accessories in the neighborhood; more colors only make it clumsier and unruly.
The Balancing Act on Color Combination for Dresses
Another trick of the trade is to balance out any colors you choose to mix carefully. Anything done proportionately is a foolproof way of coordinating your outfit. Like they say, too much of anything is good for nothing. An enthusiastic fashion blogger known for her insights into clothing and style, she expresses her admiration for different colors, styles, and prints.
When talking about color combinations, she says. “I love how the two dark colors combine, giving me one long line. And I love the warm richness of this combination. Brown and black are classic neutrals, meaning they go with everything, including each other.”
Match It With Your Skin Tone
If you are pale or yellow-toned, go for the warmer side of the palette. You can pull off brighter or warmer shades of brown, coral, honey, gold, amber, taupe, etc., as they look amazing on this skin tone.
They can be the perfect color combination for your dress that suits your tone. The same applies to your eye makeup, too. If you have cooler undertones, choose cool shades like:
Gray, Navy blue
Varying shades of green
Aqua
Emerald
Burgundy
When in Doubt, Err on the Neutral Side
Some people prefer muted and subdued colors, opting for neutral shades. This is a great color combination for a dress, especially for formal occasions. If this is you and you do not want to change drastically, go with one cool or warm color and leave everything else neutral. It’s always best to keep it this way!

What Color Looks Best With Jeans?
White and black jeans are the most versatile denim washes you can own. They are seasonless, neutral, and go with everything. Wear them with the same-colored top to create a sleek monochromatic look or for a contrasting, all-year-round black-and-white look.
I do have a couple of personal preferences:
Black Jeans
I prefer black jeans with the most subtly colored tops, for example, although I’ve broken this rule many times.
Black jeans and a black top create a chic monochromatic look.
Black jeans also work well with colors, although I prefer to pair them with softer colors rather than bright ones.
And I always break this rule—black pairs beautifully with chambray.
Black looks great with any other neutral.
Black and white is a classic combo.
White Jeans
White jeans look timeless with a black top and pair beautifully with brights.
I prefer white jeans with bright tops over black jeans with colorful tops.
White and chambray are timeless combinations.
White looks beautiful with any neutral.
White on white is:
Chic, Timeless
Glamorous
The Best Color Pairs for Dark Blue Jeans
Dark blue jeans are one of the most versatile washes because they can easily dress up or down. They are also the most flattering and leg-lengthening. What you pair with dark denim primarily depends on your style. I prefer them with light-to-medium shades, but they also work well with dark-colored tops, especially at night.
Dark blue jeans with a black top create an evening-ready look.
Dark blue jeans work well with bright tops.
The denim tuxedo, with monochromatic denim shades, works if you love it, but a light chambray with dark denim is more straightforward to pull off.
Dark jeans look classic with any neutral.
Dark jeans and a white button-down top is a classic timeless outfit.
Dark jeans can dress up casual basics.
The Best Color Pairs for Medium Wash Jeans
This is the wash of the moment and the most versatile of the blue washes, as it pairs equally well with dark and light tops. It’s also a great transitional shade that works in warm and cool weather. A monochromatic denim look can be chic if you like it, but going for a more significant difference between the washes is easier. Another denim-on-denim look. There are no more rules about pairing denim with denim.
I love the crisp look of white with these medium denim jeans.
Stripes seem to go incredibly well with this wash—a neutral top pairs well with medium denim.
Medium blue, not denim, is one of my least favorite ways to pair tops with jeans, but this is a preference, not a rule, so if you love it, go for it.
Medium-wash denim works best with bright tops from all the blue washes.
Medium-wash denim looks great with black.
The Best Color Pairs for Light Wash Jeans
Light-wash denim is the most casual and, therefore, the least versatile. These jeans tend to look destroyed or shredded. They are also the least seasonless, although that is changing.
I love light denim paired with dark or bright tops and white, but I’m not a fan of the combination of light jeans and light-colored tops. Again, these rules are all made to be broken, so if you love that combo, go for it.

Avoid pale washout: Avoid colors too close to your skin tone, like beige or light pastel yellow, which can wash you out.
Example of Best Color Combinations for Fair Skin Tones
Light blue chambray shirt with white chinos
Lavender polo shirt with dark grey jeans
Emerald green sweater with navy blue dress pants
Ruby red T-shirt with white denim shorts (summer look)
Medium Skin Tones
The color chameleon: Lucky you! Medium skin tones are versatile enough to rock a broader range of colors. Experiment with warm tones like:
Mustard yellow
Burnt orange
Cool tones like:
Navy blue
Forest green
Warm or cool embrace: Don't be limited! Embrace both warm and cool tones, depending on the desired effect.
Golden yellow or orange creates a sun-kissed look
Blue or green offers a refreshing feel
Go bold: Don't shy away from more daring colors and patterns. Medium skin tones can handle a broader range without being overpowered.
Example of Best Color Combinations for Medium Skin Tones
Mustard yellow button-down shirt with navy blue chinos
Forest green bomber jacket with khaki trousers
Navy blue blazer with a light pink button-down shirt
Burgundy turtleneck with light grey dress pants
