How Versatile is Brown in Fashion?

wardrobe with brown color - What Color Goes with Brown

Unlike bright colors, which often correspond to a particular season or occasion, a rich, chocolatey brown can work in casual summer outfits or moody fall ensembles. Brown also complements a wide range of hues, making it easy to mix and match across palettes. Brown's adaptability makes it a color that easily transitions between seasons, styles, and moods.

That said, deeper tones work well in fall and winter, while lighter shades are ideal for spring and summer.

Brown and the Color Wheel

Brown is neutral on the color wheel, bridging warm and cool hues. This makes it adaptable and easy to pair with other colors. For instance, brown blends well with:

  • Warm tones

    • Orange

    • Yellow

  • Cool shades

    • Navy

    • Gray

These qualities make brown a versatile color choice for any season.

How to Pair Brown with Other Colors

When exploring what colors go with brown, consider how shades of brown interact with complementary and contrasting colors. Warm shades of brown, like chocolate and rust, create a cozy feel that pairs well with earthy colors like burgundy and olive green. Try pairing these tones with cooler neutrals like gray and navy for a more modern, sophisticated look.

On the other hand, lighter shades of brown, like tan and beige, offer a more airy appearance that complements a range of colors, including warm autumn tones, cooler shades like blue and green, and even bright colors for a fun summer look.

Seasonal Color Combinations for Brown

Brown's color pairing flexibility makes it an excellent choice for year-round fashion.

Winter

Brown pairs well with darker shades, offering a cozy, sophisticated look like black and burgundy.

Summer

Lighter shades like beige and cream keep the outfit fresh and airy.

Autumn

Brown fits perfectly with red, orange, and yellow. These colors mimic the natural changes in foliage, giving your outfit a seasonal touch.

Classic Complementary Colors for Brown

When styling brown, choosing the right complementary colors can enhance your look and make a striking statement:

  • White, cream, and beige are great complementary colors for brown. They create a clean and sophisticated look.

  • White adds a stark contrast, making your brown clothing stand out.

  • Cream and beige offer a softer transition, ideal for a more subtle appearance.

  • Green shades, such as olive green, also pair well with brown. They evoke a natural vibe and balance each other nicely.

  • Red provides a vibrant contrast, creating a bold and eye-catching outfit.

Analogous Colors for Brown

Analogous colors sit next to brown on the color wheel, offering a harmonious look.

  • Tan, a lighter shade of brown, blends seamlessly for a monochromatic style.

  • Beige and other neutral tones, like gray and black, create a sophisticated and muted look.

  • Navy blue offers a cool, professional appearance that complements brown without overwhelming it.

Adding Colorful Accents to Brown

Accents can add a pop of color to your brown clothing.

  • Blue in brighter shades, like sky blue, contrasts well with brown, providing a refreshing look.

  • Green accents, such as forest green, enhance the earthy feel of brown outfits. Red can be used as an accent to create a bold statement.

  • An olive green accessory can tie the outfit together, giving it a cohesive and stylish finish.

  • Navy blue accents are also a classic choice, adding depth and elegance.

The Psychology of Brown

formal dress - What Color Goes with Brown

In color psychology, brown can evoke:

  • Feelings of strength

  • Security

  • Reliability

  • Warmth

  • Comfort

As an earth tone, brown reminds us of:

  • Trees

  • Soil

  • Plants

  • Rocks

  • Reminiscent of autumn

What To Know About Wearing Too Much Brown

However, large amounts of brown can communicate isolation and loneliness. This shouldn’t be a significant concern when putting together an outfit. However, if you’re planning on wearing all brown, you’ll want to put extra consideration into the exact shades you choose.

How to Style Brown With Other Colors

Generally, brown works best with garments that reinforce its positive connotations. Brown is associated with:

  • Nature

  • Warmth

  • Comfort

It’s a fantastic color choice for:

  • Flannel shirts

  • Boots

  • Chore jackets

  • Carpenter pants

  • Other workwear pieces

When to Wear Brown

Brown tends to be the easiest to wear in the colder seasons, specifically spring and fall, but you can wear it year-round if you know how to style it.

What Colors Go With Brown Clothing

man sitting in cafe - What Color Goes with Brown

1. Black and Brown: The Unlikely Duo That Works

Pairing brown and black may have been a fashion faux pas in the past, but not anymore! The two dark shades create a sophisticated outfit perfect for any occasion. When styled together, they create visually appealing and practical looks.

For instance, a sheer black dress with a brown leather jacket is an excellent alternative to an all-black outfit. Brown leather jackets are more wearable than their black counterparts and, for that reason, are trending.

2. Yellow and Brown: A Natural Fit

Yellow indeed tends to steal the spotlight, but it doesn't have to. If you want to tone things down and make those bright pieces feel less in your face, style them with brown staples with a hint of warmth (e.g., copper).

3. Purple and Brown: The Warm and Cozy Color Combo

Brown is an inherently warm color, which makes it an ideal color scheme for cozier garments, such as knits and sweater dresses. While the color works well, combining it with a deep purple creates an elegant, regal effect. Fresh, sweet, and airy more your vibe? Go for a lighter lavender instead.

4. Light Gray and Brown: A Classic Pairing

Swap out your jacket for a fun and fashionable cape to add a sense of whimsy to your standard three-piece suit. This outfit is great for in-between temperatures, and brown and gray are a sophisticated match.

5. Kelly Green and Brown: A Nod to Nature

Go ahead and take a note from nature—this brown and green pairing is pure perfection. Consider a sleek statement shoe like these green pumps contrasting the bulkiness of a cozy sweater, vest, and wide-leg pants.

6. Cream and Brown: A Fresh Alternative to White

Are you tired of cottagecore or want to change your look? Then, throw a sweater vest over your brown prairie dress for a light academic aesthetic, with loafers as the finishing touch.

In terms of shade pairings, white pops against just about any color, but a cream vest is more similar to brown and creates a cool, understated style.

7. Red and Brown: A Subtle Yet Striking Pairing

If the striking combination of black and red isn't for you, try brown and red (you won't be disappointed). It's both subtle and standout, which is probably why it's a popular pairing from season to season.

8. Blue and Brown: A Match Made in Heaven

What are you waiting for if you don’t own a pair of brown knee-high boots yet? Coordinate with:

  • Leggings

  • A miniskirt

  • Whatever moves you.

We're partial to this denim number, which feels '70s-inspired.

9. Charcoal Gray and Brown: A Fall Favorite

The ultimate fall outfit is a leather brown midi skirt and medium gray knit. This shade and fabric combo creates contrast and interest. Swap out leather for silk to adapt it to spring and replace your cozy top with a sweater vest.

10. Light Green and Brown: A Touch of Color

Cargo pants are back, and we love this brown suede iteration. A brown striped shirt and puffer vest stay within the same color family. However, a green head scarf adds a tinge of brightness and dopamine to keep it from feeling too muted.

11. Orange and Brown: A Fun Color Combo

A cozy knit and a sequined maxi skirt are at once casual and dressed-up, making this outfit transition well from day to night. Against the sweater's light brown color, the orange skirt stands out.

12. Pink and Brown: A Bold Contrast

Brown and neon pink might not sound like they go together, but here's visual proof: they certainly do. Unlike the brown leather jacket you saw earlier in our list, this one qualifies as burgundy. Its reddish-brown hue works well with the vibrant pink of the skirt and shoes.

13. Brown With Burgundy: A Deep, Rich-Hued Pairing

Try pairing brown with another earthy color, burgundy. I love the deep, rich hues of these together. Add a few more neutrals, like creams or tan, and even lighter shades of burgundy on the color wheel, like soft dusty pinks, to round out the outfit. This is a favorite brown color combination in the fall and winter months.

14. Brown With Tan: A Safe Bet

These are always a safe bet and create a timeless tonal outfit. A few go-to combinations are to pair a brown bottom with a white tee and then add in tan accessories and layers. When in doubt, go with more neutrals when styling brown. Bring in shades of:

  • Browns

  • Tans

  • White

If you’re wearing denim, try a brown shirt, shoes, and a cream sweater over your shoulders. If you need to add another color to mix things up, choose any from today's blog post!

15. Brown With White And Off-White: A Clean Look

Brown and white are such good contrasts in my book. I love this for spring and summer. And when paired with the right accessories, it can feel like a vacation! Take these medium brown wide-leg pants styled with a cotton tee. Adding a woven bag for spring and summer is the perfect addition.

This is also why a white cotton summer dress with brown accessories is my favorite. It just feels so summery and effortless.

16. Brown With Sage Green: An Earthy Pairing

Returning to more earthy tones, brown with a soft sage green is an excellent color combination. I love sage green, which is usually available all year round.

  • I love to style brown pieces for fall and winter with my sage green leather jacket or sweaters.

  • In the spring and summer, I pair sage green cotton tees or dresses with brown clothing, sandals, or accessories. I love this color combination because sage green is one of my favorite colors to wear.

17. Khaki: The Perfect Complement to Brown

How cool is this outfit from top to toe? Renia teams her Balenciaga Le Cagole boots with a brown midi, classic white tee, and oversized khaki puffer, which works seamlessly.

18. Brown With Navy: A Classic Combination

I'm a big fan of navy and brown. Most of my houses are these two colors! So it’s no surprise that pairing your brown pieces with something navy would be a good idea I 100% approve of. This outfit is my favorite: brown trousers and a navy suede jacket. And you know I’m going to add more color options here! If you want to add another color to this look, you can go lighter in your blue and add a soft blue sweater or bag. Or try a sage sweater, too.

19. Brown With More Brown – Go Monochromatic

When in doubt, just wear all brown. You really can't go wrong here. And while brown and tan is, I suppose, sort of brown and more brown, I like an entire outfit in one shade of brown. All dark chocolate brown pieces. To make this work, just mix your textures to create some interest. This look would be dull if I wore a smooth brown leather boot with a soft, non-textured dress. Instead, I have a snakeskin boot with varying brown hues and lots of texture, and the knit dress adds movement and more texture that feels different.

For an accessory, you can 100% go monochromatic in an all-brown look and add a brown bag. But I added a contrasting brown in a cream bag for this particular outfit. This blog post guides you on what colors to add when putting your brown outfits together. So, for this all-brown outfit, when thinking of an accessory to add, like a bag or purse, any color we've included in this blog post of what to wear with brown will work!

13 Amazing Ways to Style Brown Pants

woman smiling - What Color Goes with Brown

1. Brighten Up Brown Pants with a Colorful Top

Brown doesn't have to mean boring! There are plenty of options that feel almost caramel-hued. This means they go well with tan shoes, as we see here, and the darker brown of the shirt. It's a good bridge between neutral hues, in other words.

2. Pair Brown Pants with a Contrasting Under-Layer

Low-rise pants are back in fashion, and if you'd like to make your brown pants feel trendy, this is a good option. Wearing a contrasting under-layer, as Caroline Daur does here, is optional. Wear your pants long with a pointed toe underneath.

3. Style Brown Pants with a Flared Cut

Flare or bootcut pants are attractive styles that work as classic trouser options. Here, the jacket, shoes, sunglasses, and bag are all a near-match (meaning almost the same color, but not relatively), so the look is tonal without being boring.

4. Sport Brown Trousers for a Chic Look

Jeanne Damas is a French style icon, partly because she chooses surprising colors for her basics—including these casual brown trousers. She brings in color with the blue top and red shoes, and the navy bag and red lip offer some necessary cohesion. Here, the brown pants are the neutral base layer.

5. Give Cropped Brown Pants a Polished Look

Cropped pants are fun regardless of the context, but it takes a few styling notes to keep your brown pants from looking like pirate pantaloons. The matching cropped jacket helps keep things polished, and the pants extend over her high boots—giving a long, clean line from head to toe.

6. Balance Brown Leather Pants with a Bright Top

Brown pants, especially leather paper bag ones like these, can feel heavy. The brightly colored handkerchief top and pretty blue bag are such pleasant surprises. In other words, with such a heavy piece on the bottom, bring in some lightness and color on top.

7. Opt for Oversized Brown Pants

If you're the type to dress maximalistically, brown pants work well as an oversized piece like this. With a complementary hue on top and some necessary structure in your outerwear, the result will look baggy but manageable.

8. Go for a Tan Shade of Brown Pants

Very light brown and tan are essentially the same color—and if brown feels too intense for you just yet, try a deep tan pant like this. A matching top will make the result look more like a suit or a jumpsuit, and you can add a dash of pretty detail to the bag.

9. Style Brown Pants with Cool Hardware

Now, these are cool brown pants—with the gold hardware and straight shape, they connote riding pants and boots but still feel street-style-ready. This outfit is also Exhibit A, proving how brown and black can look amazing together, so long as neither is too dark.

10. Pair Brown Pants with Lighter Clothes for Spring

Brown pants don't have to go into storage when temperatures rise. A lighter-hued bag and shoes help the outfit feel less wintry, and the knit top feels more airy than a heavy sweater. A white tee would make it even more spring-like!

11. Style Brown Leather Pants with a Crop Top

The brown leather pants and top are substantial (the outfit almost looks like a casual suit), so a white crop top helps the look feel lighter. This might not be the top to wear in the middle of winter, so swap it with a tee when it's cold.

12. Dress Down Brown Pants with Sneakers

Suede brown pants might feel like a lot, but the trick is to style it as you would jeans. A simple bomber jacket and striped sneakers (these are Stradivarius, but you can opt for Adidas) make the pants feel less like a statement and more part of a coherent outfit.

13. Achieve a Vintage Look with Brown Denim Pants

Truly, a brown denim pant is such a cool 70s vibe. Pick a wide-leg cut to keep it feeling more modern, and choose some fun shoes. Bonus points if you wear a near-matching jacket on top, giving us a full Canadian tuxedo in a surprising color.

How to Style Black and Brown Outfits

Assign a Main Color Role

When combining black and brown in an outfit, think of one shade as the main character and the other as a supportive player. This will help you create a balanced look that won’t clash. One easy way to apply this theory to a look is to stick to one color for your clothing and the other for your accessories.

“For example, if I’m wearing a black outfit, I like to offset the black with a tan or lighter brown belt, shoe, or bag,” says stylist Ana Bribiesca.

Start With Lighter Shades

If you're still finding your footing in styling black and brown, López recommends starting things out lightly. “A good entry to wearing point brown and black together is pairing black with a contrasting camel, tan, or khaki,” she explains. The contrast between a lighter shade of brown and black simplifies the styling process since “it feels like mixing opposites colors, almost like [styling] black and white, so it’s easier to add dimension to the outfit.”

Let Accessories Do the Work

If you struggle to connect black clothing with brown accessories, save yourself the struggle and incorporate accessories that combine both shades. “Adding a black and brown printed accessory is a nice way to marry the colors together,” says Brown of this no-fuss method of bringing a brown and black outfit to life.

Don't Sleep on Separates

If you'd rather not spend time curating and color-matching accessories, you can still use López's base and complementary approach with classic separates like dresses, long coats, trousers, and boots.

In cold weather, you can easily separate a black and brown outfit into two layers: outerwear and underwear. Choose one color for your shoes and coat and the other for whatever you're rocking underneath.

Fake a Monochromatic Fit

Conversely, you can create the illusion of a head-to-toe monochromatic look by choosing browns on the opposite end of the color spectrum. “If you want your outfit to feel super cohesive, pair black with a darker, chocolate brown. This gives the same feel as mixing navy and black,” says López. “They’re different, but the colors blend easily and create a more seamless 'monochrome' outfit.”

Aim for Animal Print

One of the boldest ways to bring black and brown together is with print. “I love a classic leopard or cheetah print in an outfit,” says López, who calls this print-forward approach “a great entry point to wearing black and brown together.” As Brown points out, animal prints “do the work for you,” making it a breeze to wear these shades together and even helping you identify what color accessories to work into your look.

Feel free to include more than one sector of the animal kingdom. Black and brown look gorgeous in animal-inspired patterns, from zebra to snakeskin.

Pick a Power Pattern

If animal print isn't your thing, you can still make a print or pattern the focal point of your black-and-brown look. “Try a color block, plaid, geometric, floral, or abstract print,” suggests López, who also points out that patterns don't necessarily need to feature genuine brown to give the illusion of this color pairing. “You still get the same feel with brown bronze or yellow gold,” she says of alternative shades to seek out when sourcing a brown and black pattern or print.

Consider Pops of Color Carefully

Styling a black and brown outfit becomes much easier when you consider these two colors neutrals. As such, a key to making a brown and black look cohesive is to stick to an overall neutral palette with, according to López, “one or two pops of color, max.” Any more than that, and you risk creating color chaos.

9 Tips for Mastering the Aesthetic Brown Outfits in Your Wardrobe

woman in cozy jacket - What Color Goes with Brown

1. Know Your Browns: Choosing the Right Shade for You

Brown comes in various shades, from light tan to deep espresso. Understanding which shade complements your skin tone and personal style is key. Lighter browns like beige and camel are great for a softer look, while darker browns offer a more dramatic effect.

2. Complementary Colors: Pairing Brown with Other Hues

Brown pairs beautifully with a range of colors. For a classic look, combine it with creams and whites. Try pairing brown with blues, greens, or pinks for something more daring.

3. Playing with Textures: Adding Depth to Brown Outfits

Mixing textures can add depth to your brown outfits. Think of combining a smooth, silk-brown blouse with a rough-textured brown skirt. The contrast in textures makes the outfit more exciting and dynamic.

4. Layering Different Shades of Brown: Creating a Sophisticated Look

Don’t be afraid to layer different shades of brown in one outfit. For instance, a light brown shirt under a dark brown jacket can create a sophisticated and cohesive look.

5. Seasonal Styling: Adapting Brown for Year-Round Wear

Adapt your brown outfits to the seasons. Lighter fabrics and shades work well in spring and summer, while richer, darker browns are perfect for autumn and winter.

6. Incorporating Prints and Patterns: Adding Playfulness to Brown

Don’t avoid incorporating prints like stripes, polka dots, or animal prints with your brown pieces. They can add a fun and playful element to your outfit.

7. Balancing Proportions: Achieving a Well-Styled Look

If you’re wearing a loose-fitting brown item, balance it with something more fitted. For example, a baggy brown sweater pairs well with skinny jeans or a fitted skirt.

8. Occasion-Appropriate Brown: Choosing the Right Shade for the Right Event

Choose the right shade and brown style for the occasion. Lighter, more casual browns are great for daytime, while deeper, richer browns suit formal events.

9. Style Experimentation: Finding Your Unique Looks with Brown

Don’t be afraid to experiment with brown to find what works best for you. Fashion is a personal journey, and brown offers a versatile palette to express your individuality.
