How Do I Find My Fashion Style?
Strategizing can alleviate some of the pressure when developing your style. One way to approach creating a personal style is to go through phases. Think of this as a less aggressive version of your angsty teen years. Review the list below and write down any fashion styles that pique your curiosity. From there, evaluate your wardrobe and see what fashion style you can start with.
I do not recommend going out and buying a whole new wardrobe to try a new style. If I want to try a style I don’t have anything close to, I ask myself why I have never bought anything for that specific aesthetic style. If the answer to that question is that I was intimidated to try it, I would start by borrowing or buying one item that fits that fashion style. I slowly integrate it into my wardrobe and gradually shift towards that style if I enjoy it and feel like it works for me.
Be Realistic About Your Daily Life
If the style itself doesn’t work for my daily work/life balance I need to consider how much of my wardrobe I am willing to dedicate to that specific style. For instance, if I work at a business casual office but identify as a gothic Lolita, I may have to make some compromises and develop two wardrobes/fashion styles.
One that works for my office (that has small hints to my personal style) and a wardrobe dedicated to my free time. In the previous example, I could wear business casual clothes but keep the tones dark, and add a few more gothic-style pieces of jewelry. And on the weekends, I could fully embrace my fashion style.

How to Build an Outfit in 12 Steps
1. Check the Weather: Don’t Get Caught in the Rain
Even in sunny Los Angeles, it rains or gets a bit colder once in a while. Step 1 is knowing what the weather is going to be so that you dress appropriately and are comfortable for the day.
2. What Are You Doing That Day?
Are you going hiking? If so, it doesn’t make sense to wear heels.
Are you going to work?
Do you have a business meeting where you need to look more polished?
Ask yourself what you’re doing that day and what outfit will work.
3. What Color Do You Feel Like Wearing?
Is it a gray day outside, so you want to wear all black? Or maybe you’re the opposite, and you want to wear bright colors on a gray day? You want to consciously choose the color that will help you feel like the best version of yourself.
4. Pick One Item That You Want to Start With
Maybe it’s a blouse you feel great in and works for the weather and what you have going on that day. So put on that blouse and think about what you want to wear with it. Do you want to wear pants, jeans, or a skirt? Allow that one piece to create the foundation for the rest of your outfit.
5. Have No More Than One Statement Piece
The statement item could be the initial piece you picked to build your outfit. Your stand-out piece could be a pair of embellished shoes or a colorful dress with a pattern. Choose only one statement item for your outfit. You don’t want to overwhelm your look by wearing multiple statement pieces like big earrings and an oversized necklace.
When I’m talking about a statement item, it sticks out about your outfit. It could be a pop of color on your bag or shoe. Focus on one statement item, not several. That will help you create a polished outfit. You want to avoid wearing:
Pop of color bag
Huge necklace
Dress with colorful patterns and embellished shoes in one outfit
6. Balance Your Outfit Proportions
I have discussed this before because it is so important to put together a look. Avoid having a tight-fitting outfit from top to bottom. If you wear a fitted top, ensure your bottom piece is loose, like a midi pleated skirt. If you’re wearing something that’s flowy or oversized on top, style it with a more tailored bottom like chic leggings or more fitted jeans.
When picking an outfit for the day, what will balance the proportions? If you’re wearing an oversized blazer, you don’t want to wear an oversized pair of pants. It will make you look bigger than you are.
7. What Will Be Your Layer or Layers for Your Outfit?
This step is one of the most important. Layers help to complete a look. Whether you wear a cardigan or a jacket, you want to pay attention to your layers. That’s why investing in these pieces is essential; they can transform a look.
If I’m wearing a cardigan with a dress, it makes it more casual. The same dress with a leather jacket gives it more of an edgy feel. Your outer layers set the tone for your outfit. There’s also something about wearing different pieces on top of each other that offers texture and dimension to your look.
8. Choose Your Shoes
Shoes also help complete an outfit. They can work as an accessory. You not only want shoes that are comfortable and will protect your feet, but you want something that will elevate your outfit. When choosing your shoes, think about what will work with your outfit that day. Is it a day you’ll be walking a lot, or are you at work sitting at a desk for most of the day? There are several pairs of essential shoes I recommend every woman needs. Your shoes will complete an outfit.
Sometimes, I’ll style a dress with my Golden Goose sneakers, and they make my outfit look fun and casual. If I go out later, I’ll switch my sneakers to a pair of strappy-heeled sandals, completely changing the look from day to night. Shoes can transform a look.
9. What Bag Will Work with Your Outfit?
I like to add a crossbody designer bag if I wear:
T-shirt
Jeans
Sneakers
Consider which bag will elevate your outfit. Ask this questions:
Will you need a large bag?
Do you have a meeting that day, and you need extra folders or your laptop so you can grab your tote?
Or if you’re going to dinner and only need your phone and credit card, you’ll probably go with a small bag. What bag will you need for functionality?
Like your shoes, a bag can transform a look. I believe you only need five handbags in your wardrobe. If you have these bags, choose the one that will be the most functional and the one that will help you look put together. I have seen women in athletic wear leave the gym wearing a chic crossbody bag look put together. The right bag can ultimately elevate a look. Even if you’re wearing an item that isn’t an investment piece or not high quality, elevating it with a great bag completely changes the look.
10. Add Jewelry
Jewelry adds to an outfit and polishes a look. It easily elevates what you wear.
11. Get Inspired
I recommend looking for style inspiration every few weeks or if you’re in a style rut. If you’re not feeling very inspired with your wardrobe and style, I like to get inspired by scrolling through Pinterest or Instagram. Search for someone with your coloring and similar body shape whose style you want. Pay attention to how they’re styling a piece. Maybe you have an item in your closet but haven’t thought of other ways to style it.
There are so many cool and exciting ways that people put things together. And if you don’t have that option, you can again use one of the visual social platforms for ideas. Find new ways to wear things to bring new life to your closet. One of my favorite things to do is to watch people. I enjoy:
Visiting a part of the city
Sitting at a coffee shop
People-watching
12. Schedule a Weekly Time to Put Your Outfits Together
Style takes practice. Especially if you’re newer to style or have a more challenging time putting looks together that you feel great in, schedule a weekly time to assemble your outfits for the week. Go through this list and start planning your outfits. Some people have a clothing rack they use to prep their outfits for the week. Pre-planning your outfits alleviates morning stress. This is an easy way to assemble your weekly outfits, so you’re not scrambling the day of.
It’s beneficial if you’re figuring out how to create a look you feel great in. When you take time aside each week to put your outfits together, check that every item is ready. Make sure that your clothes are steamed. And if you’re unsure how to put outfits together, go to step 11 and look for style inspiration.

Fall outfit ideas are everywhere and all you need to do is look. As do concerts and movies, these platforms offer heaps of inspiration:

Nora Ephron's filmography, especially Billy Crystal's white cable-knit sweater from When Harry Met Sally, would look brilliant with crisp denim and your best Mary Janes. But if you want to see the fresh fall 2024 trends in action, Fashion Week street style is where you want to look first.
Fall Fashion Trends: A Street Style Roundup
Over on the Milan and Paris sidewalks, novel layering outfits presented fresh possibilities and pairings—think: cardigans converted into scarves and yummy shirt sandwiches made in fall 2024's color trends. If summer is for showing off how great you look without much clothing, fall is for flexing all you can do with your wardrobe and the street style crew can do a lot. Showgoers put playful spins on preppy staples at New York Fashion Week, cropped button-down shirts, sharp suits styled and season’s best sneakers.
Identify your favorite street style looks from the Spring 2025 season and a comprehensive edit of fall's top trending items. Ahead, an assortment of fall outfit ideas is freshly plucked from:
New York
London
Milan
Paris Fashion Week
1. Fall's Hardest-Working Trend
In an ironic twist, the English country style is a favorite among the fashion circuit's city-slickers, with the barn jacket trend being a particular standout. This PFW attendee opted to explore the outerwear's farm-ready feel that Bella Hadid would adore:
Pin-tucked
Cuffed blue jeans
Cherry red cowboy boots
2. The Season's MVP
Driven by the 2024 Olympics, this past summer saw a spike in sporty essentials, including the country club-approved polo shirt. Take a cue from Marie Claire's editor-in-chief, Nikki Ogunnaike, with a luxurious fine-knit style, which pairs well with a pair of front-pleat trousers and a sophisticated, covetable watch.
3. In a Cinch
It's one of the fashion set's best-kept secrets: when time is not on your side, and you need a put-together outfit STAT, rely on an age-old all-black outfit formula but add a few fresh accessories to make it look like you put in a lot more effort than you did. A long-sleeve black maxi dress with your best ballet flats and a sculptural belt that doubles as an art piece will do the trick.
4. A Hero Cardi and Baggy Jeans
I doubt you need me to tell you that the best baggy jeans have climbed the ranks to be 2024's top denim trend. You've seen the celebrity street style sightings and read the runway reports. This fall, try:
A pair of oversized, dark-wash denim
A quality wooly cardigan
A simple white T-shirt.
5. A Sure-Thing Shawl
A cozy cashmere shawl makes for a fresh-feeling departure from the traditional fall outerwear of trenches and top coats. Styling-wise, make a nod to the forever on-trend quiet luxury aesthetic with monochromatic gray knits stacked on top of each other, a color combination both Succession's Shiv Roy and the Olsen twins wholeheartedly endorse.
6. Creative Color-Blocking
Fall conjures a vivid and specific color palette of:
Soft browns
Natural greens
Spiced oranges.
But when you're feeling rogue, make a more unexpected color choice like bubble gum pink and brat green, for instance.
7. Forget a Fashion ‘Faux-Pas’
In fall 2024, wearing white after Labor Day is accepted and encouraged as a fresh-feeling departure from the season's standard dark color. An all-white outfit consisting of a slip skirt, V-neck pullover, and as-needed knit tied around the waist is an especially refined option.
8. Reconsider the Capri Pants Trend
You likely have opinions about the capri pants trend resurgence in 2024 and they might even be negative ones. But as this sharply dressed MFW attendee demonstrates, the slim-fitting cropped bottoms look incredibly chic with sling-back heels and a neutral blazer.
9. An Easy A
Again, a fool-proof outfit idea for fall is to lean into the season's back-to-school spirit. Start with a bright blue button-down and straight-leg denim. Slip into a camel trench coat, and if you get really into an academic mood, a tie makes for a clever, teacher's pet-approved addition.
10. Scene-Stealing Leather
The beauty of leather jacket outfits is that you can leave it to the outerwear to the bulk of the style heavy-lifting. A nipped-in, belted leather trench coat makes a strong impression, though a neatly starched white Oxford shirt and candy apple red ankle-strap heels certainly don't hurt.
11. Set for the Stables
The 2024 boot trends confirm it: it's time you sign up for horseback riding or, at the very least, add some equestrian influence to your shoe collection. A fresh pair of knee-high riding boots in natural leather looks bright with trousers tucked inside. A crisp white turtleneck sweater will top off the ride-ready look.
12. Back-to-School Spirit
Lean into autumn's inherent academia with a grown-up school uniform:
Baggy, barrel-leg jeans
Wooly sweater vest
Starched white button-down shirt.
13. The Ladylike Trend
Take a style cue from The Swans, the immaculately dressed socialites from the '60s, like Lee Radziwill and Babe Paley, who are mainstays on mood boards, and recreate a skirt suit with a tweed lady jacket and matching mini.
14. Ready for Work and a Runway Show
If there's one standout garment to try this season, it's a heavy-duty chore jacket that can be put to work. This NYFW guest chose a camel-colored workwear jacket (not all that dissimilar from a classic Carhartt), teaming it with a sturdy maxi skirt in the same natural shade.
15. A Cardigan-Cum-Scarf
Last season, sweaters worn over coats were the uncontested front-running street style trend. But this season, the concept has evolved into a new take on not-quite-wearing knitwear. Now, fashion week attendees are wearing their sweaters-as-scarves.
16. The ‘Black Top and White Skirt’ Combo
The white skirt outfit of summer 2024—i.e., any combination consisting of a white skirt and black blouse—is also one to replicate during the breezier months. Start with a long maxi, then try the tailored vest trend for a prepster-adjacent outfit.
17. Business Casual, but Make It 2024
Dress down a sharp blazer with a relaxed fit and light-wash jeans and don't forget a touch of shimmer.
18. Lean on Linen
Breezy linen is not solely a summer textile, and it's well-earned. It's spot on in your autumn wardrobe as a versatile material that won't weigh an outfit down. Consider a lightweight linen shirt paired with sturdy blue jeans as a relaxed, no-frills combo.
19. Get Wild
When you've grown bored of black and aren't excited by soft ivory, consider the age-old mantra that maximalists have been saying for years: leopard is neutral.
20. Shift Into Sports Mode
Similar to the above look, this showgoer spiced up her professional gray-on-gray separates with a super sporty pair of sneakers. It's a textbook case of the “wrong shoe theory” at work.
21. Tell Me About It, Stud
Regarding the fall 2024 denim trends, it's clear that the street style set is partial to denim skirts. This NYFW guest opted for one embellished with rivets and hardware, giving the girlish piece a subtle grunge undertone.
22. Long Live the Jorts Trend
The 2024 jorts revival is a somewhat polarizing trend. But the longline denim style doesn't have to cause chaos: a sophisticated black blouse and a simple flat will elevate a pair of jorts.
23. Anyone Up for a Game of Ruby?
As a follow-up to summer's athletic shorts trend, fall 2024 invites you to try a rugby shirt, even if you have no interest in the game. A flirty mini skirt is an unexpected accompaniment to the sporty piece, yet it works.
24. Denim All the Way
Denim-on-denim outfits were typical in NYFW's street style, but this look, in particular, was a Canadian tuxedo chef's kiss. The key element was how this guest contrasted the washes of her trench coat and jeans.

The Top 50 Best Style Tips for Women to Look Effortlessly Chic and Stylish
As women, we have so much on our plates, between the demands of motherhood and the time constraints of our careers, that dressing in a way that makes us feel both confident and stylish seems like an unattainable goal. But it’s not! Have you ever noticed that some women have a consistent quality about them that feels both effortless and perfectly polished? You get the impression that the way they dress comes naturally, and what feels impossible to you looks like an innate skill they possess.
For these women, fashion has much less to do with a hidden talent and is much more based on knowing what works for them and following a few guiding principles. They build a strategy for their style so that most guesswork is eliminated immediately and getting dressed in the morning is a breeze. If you want to learn to look stylish and put-together without investing in an entirely new wardrobe, the secret can be found in a few essential rules. Scroll down for the top 50 style tips for women that work regardless of your size, budget, or aesthetic. These tips will help you automate your wardrobe and remove the confusion of what to wear.
1. Determine How You Want To Show Up in the World
The first step in establishing your sense of style is to build your message. Think of this as your branding, an external package that shows the world exactly who you are on the inside and highlights your strongest qualities. Begin by asking yourself how you’d like to be perceived by the people you interact with. Choose words that vividly describe how you want to represent yourself.
When we begin the personal styling process with a new client, this is the initial step we start with. Before knowing what your clothing will look like, you must be clear on your message. Remember that you’re always driving your narrative, whether you’re conscious of it or not. What do you want your style to say? These adjectives provide a measurement to assess your image against, so it’s important to get as clear and concise as possible:
Powerful
Compassionate
Sophisticated
Intelligent
2. Be Authentic
The clothing you wear is an extension of who you are. It should strengthen your image and express your true self, so don’t force it. This means not wedging your feet into 5-inch stilettos that require an hour's foot massage at the end of the workday if you’re more comfortable in flats or wearing the latest trends just because all your friends are. Wear clothing that feels like YOU. If you’re unsure how you feel about something, take the authenticity test by asking yourself three simple questions:
Does the outfit feel comfortable or will I be constantly adjusting it?
Do I recognize myself in the mirror or am I trying to be someone I’m not?
Does this clothing bring me joy and am I excited to wear it?
If you answer yes to all three, you’re good to go! If not, look for another option.
3. Don’t Prioritize Fashion Over Comfort
When it comes to style tips for women, this one is non-negotiable. If torn between style and comfort, always opt for what feels the best. When you’re uncomfortable or restricted in any way, you cannot exude power. The adage that beauty is pain is not a reality we should ascribe to.
As women, we juggle busy careers with child rearing and family life. The last thing we need to worry about is spending an 8-hour workday in a dress that sucks the life out of us or jeans that feel too restricting. There’s always an alternative, equally as stylish, option that we can find.
4. Identify Your Inspiration
Studying the work of those who’ve already mastered a skill is a helpful place to start when learning something new. As you begin to determine the framework for your sense of style, drawing inspiration from people who fit your mold is helpful. Make a list of individuals you view as consistently well-dressed, whether it’s:
Celebrities
Politicians
TV characters
Co-workers
Knowing who you look up to helps you better identify your preferences as you build a unique personal style. This exercise can often feel difficult. As creatures of habit, it’s challenging to envision ourselves wearing something other than what we’re familiar with. For now, ignore the natural hesitation to step outside your comfort zone and instead focus on what appeals to you.
5. Build a Visual Style Guide
Pinterest is an excellent platform for compiling ideas. Their algorithm is quick to learn your preferences and make personalized recommendations. If you need a place to start, our account has lots of outfit inspiration to get you going. Create a collection of images that reflect your desired sense of style:
Search for outfits you’d like to try
Icons that embody your aesthetic
Anything else you can reference to help build your brand.
Alternatively, you can save images into a designated folder on your phone, cut out pictures from magazines, and build a physical mood board. Collecting photos allows you to see your preferences and quickly identify patterns in your taste. This visual framework is your style guide while you assemble outfits and decide what you will wear.
6. Assess What You Own and Let Go of What Doesn’t Align
Getting clear on the image you’re creating for yourself will help you assess what’s in your closet with honesty and objectivity. Chances are you’ve been wearing the same thing for years, not because you chose it strategically but because it was familiar. It’s time to be more methodical about what you’re wearing. Review your current wardrobe piece by piece to determine if each item fits with the style you plan to achieve.
Commit to letting go of anything that doesn’t align. Holding on to clothing out of sentimental attachment will only guarantee you repeat old patterns. Keep the items that match your goals and part with the rest. If you want to learn how to organize your closet effectively, try our 7-step process to help you easily maintain a more effective, comprehensive wardrobe.
7. Give Your Clothes a Second Life
Clothing is a gift that keeps giving, and what no longer works for you will most certainly provide value for someone else. Check with family and friends to see who may need a clothing refreshment. Businesses like Goodwill and the Salvation Army are easy donation drop-offs, and you can also look into local nonprofits that partner with the homeless community.
We donate our clients’ unwanted clothing to organizations like Chrysalis and Dress For Success, which are both fantastic options for giving clothing to people in need who are working to re-enter the job market.
8. Use Hangers to See Which Items Don’t Get Worn
After you’ve done a significant edit, you’ll still want to keep an eye on everything you’ve kept in case you hold on to something that isn’t getting used. To see which clothes you never wear, try the hanger test. Start by turning all the hangers in your closet with the hook towards you, opposite to what you’d usually do. As you wear items, re-hang them back with the hook facing away from you in the expected direction.
Set a time frame to reassess what I’ve used, generally six months to 1 year, taking note of everything still hanging originally. These can be donated or sold as it’s doubtful you’ll ever wear them again, and they’re taking up valuable real estate in your closet.
9. Try the One in, One Out Method
Now you’re organized with a wardrobe ready to showcase your updated style. To keep it that way, you’ll have to be disciplined. Remember, the objective of an overhauled closet is to maintain a selection of clothing you wear consistently, all of which makes you feel like your most confident self. As time progresses, put systems in place that prevent you from over-accumulating.
A great way to do this is to maintain your organization by removing an item each time you add something. If you buy a new pair of jeans, one pair should go. Everything needs a purpose within your closet, so you know it’s there and don’t lose it within the clutter.
10. Shop Your Shape
Understanding your body shape is vital to successfully achieving a great sense of personal style. When you know which cuts and silhouettes work best for your body, you eliminate the confusion around what to wear and a closet filled with unworn items. One of the best style tips for women is learning how to master balance. If you hold more weight on the bottom, the trick is to offset it by adding more volume to my top (think structured shoulders and jackets with breast pockets). If my bust or shoulders are bigger, I fool the eye into creating visual balance by increasing the weight on my lower half (i.e., A-line skirt, wide-leg pants).
Women who dress easily know precisely what flatters their bodies and what to avoid, always enhancing their best assets. If you aren’t sure of your shape, research the most common female body types to easily identify which category you fall into. The most important part about developing your style is choosing clothing you feel great in. Nothing feels better than wearing clothing that enhances your body.
11. Invest What You Can Afford in Good Quality Basics
Women with great style know that spending a little extra money on bare wardrobe essentials means they will always have access to good quality pieces that stand the test of time. Basics are items that belong in every woman’s closet and can carry them across a variety of settings. The point is to have less while getting more out of what you own. We suggest investing as much as you can afford into:
Neutral denim and slack options
Versatile coats
Classic white button-downs
Fitted dresses
Structured blazers
Classic leather handbags
Staple footwear
These pieces will be worn time and time again, thus making them worth the investment. While you may need to spend a little more upfront to account for the better quality, you’ll be replacing my basics much less frequently than if I were to buy cheaper, fast-fashion versions. Ultimately, you’ll be shopping less often and saving money I would have spent on repeat purchases.
12. Create a Capsule Wardrobe
A capsule wardrobe is the intersection between fashion and functionality, where everything in your closet can be mixed and matched with ease and has a cohesive theme running through it. Think of it as your own uniform in that everything works together by setting the foundation for your style. A capsule wardrobe makes getting dressed in the morning much more accessible. Everything already pairs together, so the guesswork is removed from making great outfits.
As you edit your existing wardrobe and shop for new pieces, the ultimate goal is to have a collection of like-minded items. The importance of the capsule wardrobe methodology isn’t to achieve a certain number of items in your closet. Still, it is a framework for dressing that makes everyday life much simpler.
13. Don’t Focus on Fads
Fads or trends are the items that gain overnight attention but have little staying power. An essential style rule is knowing not to waste too much time focusing on these pieces and spending money on something that won’t be relevant for long. While we always suggest buying something, if you genuinely can’t stop thinking about it, keep these purchases to a minimum and focus on the classics.
Establishing your style means not getting overly distracted by trends, so you don’t have to update your closet continuously. If you’ve built your capsule wardrobe successfully, you should have everything you need to perfect your everyday look.
14. Wear Clothes That Fit
Fit is the number one most important thing regarding great style. Why? Because wearing clothing that fits us properly will:
Highlights our assets
Flatters our body type
It makes us feel good
Beautiful clothing has no place in our closets if it doesn’t correctly hang, drape, or mold to the shape of our bodies. Don’t go a size down just because the number makes you feel better or a size up because you think it hides problem areas. Clothing that fits you properly will always look the best.
15. Experiment and Explore
Building your image doesn’t happen instantaneously, so give yourself permission to play around and explore. Creating a sense of style is a trial-and-error process designed to help you discover what makes you feel like the best version of yourself. Use what’s in your closet to experiment with new outfit combinations. Go to the store and try on silhouettes you’ve never seen my body in. When you step outside your comfort zone, you discover new possibilities for yourself.
16. Experiment and Explore
Regarding clothing, the term ‘age-appropriate’ is ill-fitting, if not entirely outdated. The prescriptive notion of giving into a quieter, more controlled image as we age suggests that looking our best has a time limit. Being a woman is challenging enough without the added social pressure of fitting a style-by-numbers approach to dressing. As with everything in fashion, the most important element is how we feel and what our clothing choices do to elevate our confidence.
Perhaps the way we dress in our 20s isn’t something we want to re-create in our 40s, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t allowed to be just as in love with dressing our best. Regardless of your age, embrace the styles that make you feel good, experiment with fashion, and know that it’s well within your right as a woman to be as stylish as you wish to be….regardless of your age group.
17. Commit to Strategic Shopping
To shop effectively, you’ll need to have a plan in place; otherwise, you’re destined to repeat similar buying habits you’ve formed up to this point. Make a list of specific items you’re missing in your current wardrobe so you’re clear on what you’re looking for when you get to the mall. I already have three of that top, and it just so happens to be on sale now, which is not why I came. Stick to the plan! It helps to break up my shopping and focus on a few items each trip.
Our minds tend to get overloaded when we have too much to consider. If blazers and pants are on your list, save blouses and sweaters for another day. When not clouded by decision fatigue, you’re much more likely to find what you need.
18. Prep for the Dressing Room
Trying on clothing in a dressing room is often an overwhelming experience. A combination of the:
Fluorescent lights
Unflattering mirrors
Discomfort over having to ask for other sizes and styles from sales associates
Being prepared can help make the experience less stressful, especially if you’re shopping for something significant, like a special occasion outfit. Put on some makeup, do your hair, and bring your proper undergarments and shoes. When you feel your best, you’re much more likely to enjoy trying on clothes and will ultimately have more success in finding something you love.
19. Don’t Buy Unless You’re Absolutely Certain
We’ve all had that feeling of trying something on and knowing with certainty that we had to have it. But sometimes that’s not always the case, and the clothes we find in the store are the best of what we can find. If you find yourself weighing the pros and cons of buying something or convincing yourself that it’s the most suitable option at the store, it most likely isn’t going to get worn. We end up with many clothes in our closet with price tags attached.
When unsure about an item, ask the sales associate to put it on hold. If you can’t stop thinking about it after two days, try it again with fresh eyes. If you still love it, go ahead and buy it. At that point, it won’t be an impulse purchase.
20. Learn Your Go-to Brands
As you experiment with fashion, you’ll learn which brands are cut in a way that highlights your shape and offers styles in line with your aesthetic. Shopping becomes much easier when you know which stores have items that work for you. If Rag & Bone jeans tend to fit you perfectly, you can save time and energy by knowing where to look first. When J Crew consistently comes out with collections that match your style, it’s a pretty safe bet that you can find something you like there without scouring the entire mall.
Knowing your go-to brands is an easy way to build the foundation for your style while developing your capsule wardrobe.
21. Build a Personal Look Book
We make digital lookbooks for all our clients, and it’s our most sought-after service. Even if you’re not working with a Personal Stylist, you can quickly build one of your own. When you wear outfits you feel really good in, snap photos so you can remember them later. It helps make selecting an outfit much easier and guarantees you never forget a killer look.
22. Plan Your Outfits in Advance
Mornings come with a busy to-do list, especially if you have children and early meetings. Automating your routine as much as possible is one of the easiest ways to eliminate decision fatigue and ensure you’re out the door on time. Just as you plan meals, you can also plan outfits so you aren’t frantically searching for something to wear at the last minute.
A strategy as simple as selecting your clothing the night before can save you an emergency in the morning. We also like the idea of blocking out a week’s worth of outfits on Sunday night so you can batch the task and make all your fashion choices simultaneously.
23. When in Doubt, Dress Up
If you aren’t sure of the dress code, it’s always better to look more elevated than everyone else than to be the most casual. This is especially true in a new work setting where you may not be familiar with the wardrobe protocol. People look up to well-dressed individuals and instinctively give them more respect and attention. If unsure, you’re always safer erring on the dressy side.
24. Learn How to Stylishly Dress Down
Building an off-duty wardrobe guarantees you feel your best whenever you leave the house. Even if it’s on a Target run or a trip to the grocery store, a small assortment of pieces can go a long way, especially since they're mostly reserved for the weekend. When learning how to build casual outfits, think less is more and focus on staple basics like loungewear sets, a go-to denim jacket, and joggers or leggings.
25. Form a Relationship With a Tailor
Every well-dressed woman has a go-to tailor on speed dial and understands the importance of adequately fitted garments. Making a minor alteration on something too large or unstructured can significantly impact its overall aesthetic. Shortening the sleeve length on a blouse or taking in the mid-section of a blazer can completely transform their look and instantly elevate your style.
The key to dressing for your body type is balancing proportions, often achieved through minor alterations and adjustments.
26. Use the Snap Hack
If you’re a bustier woman, you know what happens when you wear a blouse. A gap forms between the two buttons above and below the breasts, and chances are you’ve been trying to disguise this by layering with a camisole or avoiding them at all costs. A simple hack can quickly solve this problem. Sew a snap on the inside of the placket directly between the two buttons in question. From the outside, nobody will know it’s there, and it will successfully prevent the fabric from separating. The snap hack can also be done on jackets, blazers, and separate dresses in the same area.
27. Hem Your Pants to the Correct Height
On the topic of tailoring, don’t overlook the length of your pants. Brands cut clothing to a standard size chart, and your legs may be shorter. Clothing that fits your unique body proportions will always be the most flattering, especially when it comes to pant length. A hem is inexpensive (under $25.00) but dramatically affects your overall look.
Be sure to take your shoes with you when going to the tailor so that they know where to cut. ½ to ¾ inch off the floor is where your pants should end, so you’ll need to decide in advance if you plan to wear them with heels or flats. And when getting jeans shortened, always opt for the original hem. It costs a little bit more but looks well worth the price.
28. Swap Your Hardware
An inexpensive garment can look more high-end by upgrading the buttons or zippers for something more unique or ornate. This is an overlooked style tip for women because it requires extra work. But the elevated results are well worth the time investment! Visit your local fabric store and check out what they have in the notions department. If you’re not great at sewing, take the hardware to your tailor and have them make the swap.
29. Remove Pockets From White Pants
White trousers or jeans always look good, but not when the pockets show through. Depending on the fabric, this fashion faux pas will often happen. Luckily, there’s an easy fix. Have your tailor cut out the pockets from your pants and close the opening with a sewing machine. It’s a straightforward alteration and will give an exponentially more polished look.
30. Always Wear Proper Undergarments
Investing in good bras and shapewear cannot be overstated. If you’re having trouble finding your correct fit, look up an expert in your city or visit the lingerie section at a high-end department store like Saks or Neiman Marcus (their sales associates are highly trained in proper fit). Undergarments that smooth in all the right places without creating lines will help bring your outfits to life and guarantee you feel more confident.
31. Own Basic Silk Camisoles
Like the right undergarments, good silk camisoles are essential base pieces in your closet. Black and white are a must—other neutral colors will also get a lot of use. These can be worn under a blazer or cardigan and look more polished than their cotton alternative. If your sense of style errs on the more feminine side, look for styles with lace detailing.
32. Opt for High-end T-shirts
A good quality tee will beat out its cheap counterpart any day based on wash, how see-through it is, and its ability to hold a shape over time. If you can, spend a little extra on your tees. Our go-to style for all clients is the ATM schoolboy tee. At $85.00, it’s undoubtedly pricy, but it means buying one nice tee that will get you through the entire year rather than five that don’t hold up from a fast-fashion retailer.
33. Have at Least One Classic White Blouse
Even if you don’t work in an office, a classic white blouse is a staple in every woman’s wardrobe. It can be dressed up or down and always looks timeless and elegant. Look for one with darts or seams down the back. They tend to form the body more flatteringly.
34. Dark Wash Denim is a Must
While lighter washes are always encouraged, dark (and even black) denim is necessary when building a capsule wardrobe. Just like the classic white blouse, these can easily take you from day to night and provide endless outfit combinations. As opposed to a lighter wash, dark rinses look inherently polished and are much more versatile, often even suitable in a business casual office place.
35. Nstantly Elevate With Monochrome
“All white everything” is a term for a reason. One of the quickest ways to look instantly chic is to dress in all one color, otherwise known as monochrome dressing. It’s streamlined and classic and helps you look highly stylish with minimal effort. Not only does this fashion formula work with neutrals like white and black, but it’s incredibly impactful with stronger colors.
36. Incorporate a Belt
Adding a belt is one of the easiest ways to build more of a shape and visually enhance your waist. In this case, we’re not talking about the one that goes on your pants but rather something that sits higher and pairs with:
Dresses
Skirts
Sweaters
Jackets
Incorporating a belt instantly creates an hourglass figure while adding a finishing detail to your look, elevating your ensemble and helping you look more polished.
37. Master the J Crew Sleeve Roll
It may not be an official fashion term, but it’s the one you see every time you look through a J Crew catalog. The sleeve roll is much more chic than a regular roll. Did you know there was such a thing? Steps to mastering the roll:
Start by unbuttoning the cuff
Fold the sleeve halfway up your arm so the cuff lies at your elbow
Roll the bottom of the folded sleeve once to cover the cuff’s seam
Roll the bottom of the twice-folded sleeve up the arm one more time
Starting from the bottom inside corner, tug the upper and outside fold so it sticks out
38. And Also the Tuck
Front tuck or full tuck. Learn how to incorporate them because they’re a fashion game changer. Just ask Oprah. Clients often feel more comfortable leaving their shirts out because they think they are less form-fitting and hide “problem areas.”
This tactic has the opposite impact. When you tuck in your shirt, you elongate your body, create a definition around your midsection, and build a more streamlined silhouette. You appear much longer and leaner with a half or full tuck than one you’ve left hanging out to form a tent-like shape.
39. Don’t Be Intimidated by Pantsuits
For starters, there’s a huge practicality aspect when considering a suit. Pants are easier than skirts, jackets provide warmth, and it’s one set, so you don’t need to stress over coordinating an outfit. It’s a low-maintenance and highly functional option. But even more importantly, suits still predominate in business and bring intrinsic feelings of strength and power. They can be considered a “suit of armor”, something we put on to walk into our meetings, ready to demonstrate our force.
Women are often intimidated by suits because their minds conjure images of shoulder pads and oversized lapels from the 80s. Luckily, today's styles are much trendier and female-oriented, often lending themselves from the boardroom straight into everyday fashion.
40. Build a Collection of Coats and Jackets
If there’s one item that can easily bring an ensemble to life without much thought, it’s a fantastic coat or jacket. Why? Because the outfit underneath can be very simple – think black skinny jeans, white tee, and booties, and the outside shell does all the work.
Opt for styles that don’t have to be taken off, make a statement, but are classic enough to wear them on repeat. Investing in these lightweight clothes is always a good idea:
Trenches
Dusters
Wool topcoats
Blazers
Moto jackets
41. Give Priority to Footwear
The average American woman owns 20 pairs of shoes but only puts five into heavy rotation. This means that a small handful of your shoes do most of the work, so it’s important to choose them wisely. Three criteria to remember when shopping for new styles are:
Quality
Comfort
Versatility
If your goal is to build a capsule wardrobe, you’ll want to invest in shoes that work with most of your clothes and can easily be dressed up or down.
42. Nude Pumps Are Always Your Friend
When in doubt, go with a pair of simple pumps matched to the color of your skin tone. They are a classic staple that extends the vertical line of your body and makes your legs look longer. Invest in a designer brand that always stays in style if you can. While the price point may be higher, the quality is exponentially better, and they will be a heavy hitter in your closet for years to come. The staple styles we always choose for our clients are:
Christian Louboutin
Gianvito Rossi
Jimmy Choo
43. Don’t Be Afraid of Pointed Toes
The idea of pointed-toe shoes makes some women uncomfortable, unsure whether they’re a fad or a timeless staple. Contrary to what you might be thinking, pointed-toe heels and flats are the most popular silhouettes for a reason. Why? Because they’re the most flattering. The elongated style continues the length of the leg and makes you look longer and slimmer, while the angular toe shape provides a refined and elegant look.
If you’re building a capsule wardrobe and want to invest in shoes that are both versatile and will stand the test of time, pointed-toe styles are your best choice. Look for pumps that are 3.5″ or less if comfort is your primary concern. You’ll still be able to achieve the same sophisticated look but with less of your weight dispersed on your metatarsal.
44. Learn to Feel Powerful in Flats
As women, we often feel obligated to wear high heels or even pressured by our employers to display our power and femininity. While this may be manageable for some, spending 8 hours a day in uncomfortable footwear can wreak havoc on our bodies for others. And as we always say, comfort must come before style to ensure you feel your best.
If you’ve worked to build a wardrobe that represents your message and highlights your strongest qualities, you can swap out your heels for flats and still feel like your most confident self. Look for classic and elevated styles, especially if you wear them in the office, to help maintain your polished image.
45. Add a Pop of Color
We often hear it from our clients, especially those who spend Monday to Friday in a corporate setting. “I live in neutrals – black, white, navy, and grey.” If you want to incorporate color (or even print) into your wardrobe but feel somewhat intimidated, add a pop rather than a full piece. You can stick to the neutrals you’re comfortable wearing and include an eye-catching accessory, like a colorful bag or a printed scarf.
It’s a simple way to introduce more color into your wardrobe without wearing it directly against your face or in a way that feels inauthentic to your style. And if color is in your comfort zone, wear it in excess!
46. Choose Staple Accessories
Having a selection of accessories on hand is key to rounding out your look. And as with personal style in general, less is often more. Some classic, nice-quality jewelry mixed in with statement costume pieces (J Crew does an amazing job at this), plus a great watch, assorted belts, and a few scarves, is often all you need to finish your ensembles.
Remember, a look that’s louder than your voice will generally distract from your personality. Focus on 1-2 staple pieces per outfit to avoid overdoing it when accessorizing.
47. Invest What You Can Afford in Handbags
We often receive a lot of questions on handbags, specifically regarding buying designer. The answer is, if you can afford it, then yes, go for the Chanel or the Louis Vuitton you’ve been eyeing. Bags like these are an investment piece; when taken care of properly, you’ll wear them for years. If brands like these aren’t in your budget, that’s no problem.
Find the best quality you can for your budgeted price point. Spending money on a bag is never a bad idea. It’s something that gets used regularly and needs to withstand a lot of wear and tear.
48. Learn the Art of High-low Dressing
Mixing high-end designers with fast-fashion affordable items is the secret style weapon of every fashion lover. It means you get to try out trends without breaking the bank and don’t have to feel guilty when they go out of style next season. High-low dressing means pairing that cute plaid blazer from H&M that’s been having a moment with your classic Theory cigarette pants, go-to Chloe bag, and slouchy Zara booties.
A great sense of style isn’t all about designer labels; it’s about balancing what feels right and being smart about your spending.
49. Have Your Stylist Emergency Kit
Every Personal Stylist carries an emergency kit, whether on set for a commercial or working one-on-one with a client. You should own one to handle any problems that will inevitably arise with your wardrobe. Items to include are:
Needle and thread for minor damage that you can repair on your own
Double stick tape for keeping a loose hem from falling down
Shout Wipes for removing makeup stains
Lint roller to touch up your darks and woolens before leaving the house
Safety pins for a variety of emergencies
50. Get Excited to Get Dressed
When you’re clear on your unique personal style and have built a wardrobe that reflects your message, getting dressed no longer feels overwhelming. It’s one step in your morning routine that sets you up to operate from a place of empowerment. Wearing clothing that makes you feel good ignites your self-confidence and drives you to perform at a higher level. When you feel your best, you command more authority from others and have a greater trust in yourself.
You take risks, assert more attention, ask for what you want, and push yourself to improve. Style is so much more than nice clothing and designer trends. It’s one of many tools at our disposal, and we can use it to help us show up in the world as the best version of ourselves. What’s the ultimate style tip for women? Have fun with the fashion process, make it your own, and see what’s possible for you! Remember, it’s a work in progress, and you’re always evolving.

25 Style Secrets for Women Over 50
1. Start with the Staples
Timeless chic defines classic style. “I'm not into trends for people of any age, really. Everyone should be timeless, chic, and sophisticated. Some staples you should have are a white blazer, a cream blouse, and a black sweater; pieces that won’t fade away." Ashley Pruitt
2. Opt for Daintier Jewelry
"A lot of women tend to wear big statement necklaces and I think that more often than not it looks unsophisticated and cheap. It can make an outfit pop in the wrong way. It’s chicer to err on the side of minimalism." Andrew Gelwicks
3. Get Yourself a Good Bag
"Accessories are fun! While they are of course functional, they can be transformational for your outfit. A lot of designers are playing around with bag sizes—oversized, super tiny. A woman carrying a 'power' bag demands attention." Andrew Gelwicks
4. Make Sure You're Wearing the Right Bra Size
"More than anything, it’s really important to have your bra properly fitted. That's a staple every woman should have in their closet and they should be fitted for it rather than just going to the store and guessing their size." Paul Cavaco
5. Don't Be Afraid of Color
"Jane Fonda wore this amazing Brandon Maxwell gown to the 2017 Emmys and it was a huge pop of color. Since seeing that on her I’m so into it, especially on older people. It’s sophisticated and young but not immature or obnoxious." Andrew Gelwicks
6. Buy a White Button Down
"A crisp white button down is the perfect piece every woman should have. It looks polished but can be worn running errands, and it can go from day to night. It's a hero piece." Negar Ali Kline

"Dark denim is more polished whereas light denim reads a bit more casual. In a professional setting, dark denim is a safe choice but more important than the wash of the denim is the fit." Negar Ali Kline
8. Have a Go-To Pair of Heels
"Sam Edelman does a great job playing around with color. They have a lot of shoes that are good for a staple but also a statement." Andrew Gelwicks
9. Wearing a Skirt? Mind Your Knees
“After a certain age your skirt should really be at or below the knee, no matter how beautiful your legs are. It looks more appropriate and it doesn’t look like you’re trying to look young." Paul Cavaco
10. Flaunt a Fresh Manicure
"Having your nails manicured goes a long way. It's really all of the little details that make you look good." Paul Cavaco
11. Make a Statement With Your Watch
"Fashion is always changing but you should be sure to have a nice watch. Maybe you can’t afford a classic Cartier tank, but if you know what it looks like then you can easily find something similar." Paul Cavaco
12. Choose Where You Want the Most Attention
"A lot of the women I dress have a certain area of their body that they don't feel as confident of. If you’re going to be more conservative with one part of your body then you need to compensate by highlighting another area. Have a leg moment if I don’t want to draw attention to my shoulders." Andrew Gelwicks
13. Shapewear Is Key
"Wearing the proper shapewear underneath everything helps to give you smooth lines." Julia Perry
14. Don't Let Anybody Tell You Not to Take Risks
"While women at fifty know who they are and are authentic to their style, I think there’s no reason why they can’t be a little daring and try something new. Whether that be a print or a new color, I don’t think there should be limitations." Negar Ali Kline
15. Don't Forget About Accessories
"A scarf is extremely multi-purpose. A silk scarf can be tied at the neck or draped over your shoulders in the evening." Negar Ali Kline
16. Chose Versatile Shoes
"Loafers are the perfect shoe to finish your look. They're so multi-purpose because you can wear them to run errands in then to meet friends for dinner." Negar Ali Kline
17. Mix It Up
"Carolina Herrera wears a white button down with a ball gown skirt and it’s so chic. It’s sort of unexpected to pair those two items together but it works really well." Negar Ali Kline
18. Use Textures to Guide Attention

19. Define Your Waist
"Typically speaking, oversized items are hard to pull off. It’s usually flattering to define your waist." Negar Ali Kline
20. Default to Black Heels
"Every woman should have a nice pair of black high heels." Paul Cavaco

"You want to keep yourself looking current and having a great haircut and color makes a big difference." Paul Cavaco

Fall Wardrobe Essentials We’re Wearing in 2024
The Go-To Denim
No wardrobe is complete without a pair of Levi’s. Whether you shop them new or vintage, a high-waist, straight-leg pair in an easy blue wash is certainly the wear-everywhere denim you’ll never get sick of. Agolde’s low-slung puddle jeans are another heavy-hitter, worn with a pair of heels to dress up the style.
The Timeless Trench
As for coats, may we present an updated trench for your consideration? Khaite’s strong-shouldered trench instantly elevates any outfit with its slightly oversized silhouette. Meanwhile, Zara’s cotton version is the easiest way to keep your in-between-seasons wardrobe looking fresh.
The Chic Sneaker
Every shoe collection needs a pair of lifestyle trainers, and these cool but classic options check all the boxes, from practicality to comfort to a vintage aesthetic. Opt for Dries Van Noten’s retro trainers or Adidas’ celeb-approved style.
The Plain White Tee
If you’re going to buy just one item from the many must-haves in this guide, make it the perfect plain white T-shirt. No further explanation necessary.
The Oversized Blazer
Feminine and masculine all at once, an oversized blazer is the definition of bona fide cool.
The Trouser-esque Leggings
You’ll want a pair of black leggings that aren’t for working out for the ideal middle ground between workout attire and formal workwear. With zips, slits, flares, or stirrups, leggings with elevated details have improved the wearability of stretchy black pants. We’d argue they could even compete with a pair of trousers! Let these from Toteme and Alo Yoga—two brands synonymous with wardrobe essentials—be the foundation for your favorite white T-shirts, blazers, trench coats, and more.
The Goes-With-Everything Belt
Sleek leather and elegant buckles are the must-have requirements for choosing an understated and stylish belt. Whether you loop it through trousers and jeans or over blazers, these belts come in handy for a quick cinch. Either one of the options below is a timeless choice you’ll return to over and over again.
The All-Purpose Knitwear
Few things are better than a luxurious cashmere crewneck when it comes to knitwear. Wear it with everything, like jeans to the office or a sequin skirt. Classic sweaters such as these are truly year-round staples.
The Minimalist Handbag
This fall, chic city girls from all over are trading their trendy It bags in favor of quietly luxurious, minimalist styles from brands like The Row to Madewell. As temperatures begin to cool down, follow suit and stick to a solid foundation of wardrobe essentials, anchored by a timeless tote (or two!).
The Barn Jacket
Last spring, we deemed the barn jacket the official new bomber jacket, spotted on nearly everyone from the street style scene to the runways. And this fall, the new(ish) closet staple is back and better than ever with chic, waxy iterations from Alex Mill to Nili Lotan. Whichever you pick, trust that it’ll transition from the countryside to the city streets seamlessly.
The Practical Carryall
Cuyana’s Easy tote is a cherished classic among editors at Vogue. This durable carryall is one of those items that finds itself perfectly balanced between practical and chic. Meanwhile, Aesther Ekme’s structured leather tote is an ideal companion for both office days and the commutes in between or weekend getaways upstate.
The All-Year-Round Knee Boot
Before getting distracted by each season’s most stylish footwear trends, you’ll want to make sure you first have a great pair of all-year-round, goes-with-everything boots. One with a manageable-height heel, black leather construction, and a slim mid-calf silhouette is likely going to fit within your wardrobe no matter your sartorial preference.
The Suede Jacket
All things suede were a huge hit on the fall 2024 runways—and contemporary brands like Staud and Vince have taken note. Try the hot new trend.
The Smoking Loafer
Even our loafers are getting the sleek treatment this fall. Opt for minimalist must-haves from The Row (Kendall Jenner is known to sport the understated style) or Cos’s penny loafer pair. Whichever you choose, expect a fall outfit formula that is effortless to recreate and polished to perfection.
The Tailored Trouser
A relaxed-fit trouser makes almost any outfit look effortless; and for that tailored-to-perfection look, a pleated black or khaki pair goes with absolutely everything.
The Collarless Blazer
Collarless blazers are on everyone’s–and we mean everyone’s–wish list this fall. Like the preppy lady jacket that dominated our spring shopping carts, the collarless blazer is a slightly sleeker version, defined by a clean-lined silhouette, nipped waist, and rounded collar that shows a hint of clavicle. Classic black choices from Bettter and Aligne are hard to beat.
The Artful Blouse
Our dressing mood for fall is stealth, mature, and effortlessly elegant. And the key to achieving this polished, put-together look is a billowing, draped blouse. Style yours from Róhe or Toteme with tailored trousers, A-line skirts, or even a longline Bermuda short. As with any elevated essential, the stylistic opportunities are endless!
The Ankle Boot
No fall capsule wardrobe is complete without a classic black ankle boot. Acne Studios’s pointed-toe pick is a Vogue editor-favorite, while Staud’s Chelsea-inspired boots are a certified steal for under $400.
The Utility Jacket
When your fall outfit calls for something other than a timeless trench coat, barn jacket, or leather bomber, reach for a large-pocket utility jacket instead. Victoria Beckham’s khaki style hails straight from the FW24 runways, while Tory Burch’s black zip-up has the same eternal closet appeal as your go-to LBD. Wear yours with a worn-in blue jean for everyday polish.
The Flannel Shirt
The ’90s are calling! The layering essential whose heyday harks back to the grunge and club scenes of the iconic era is back and better than ever with a more fitted shape and softer color palette from the likes of Róhe, Toteme, and Bottega Veneta. Just in time for apple-picking season, try these flannel shirts from Our Legacy and Buck Mason.
The Pencil Skirt
Clean-lined, pencil skirts have officially transcended the confines of the cubicle, thanks to designers like Saint Laurent, Toteme, and Tory Burch who put forward polished designs with street style appeal. Whether you sport yours with a pointed-toe, knee-high boot or glossy smoking loafer, the sleek staple promises to work overtime both on and off the clock.
The Ribbed Tank
Elevated versions of basic items like tank tops and T-shirts have the power to transform your wardrobe. These ribbed tanks will channel the simplicity of the ’90s. For added polish with minimal effort, layer one under a blazer.
The Fashion Flats
Ballet flats don’t have to be boring. In fact, small details go a long way when it comes to the flat shoe. Embellishments and other interesting details (think: mesh or a leopard-print) can take a pair of classic flats to the next level while still playing extremely well with the rest of your wardrobe.
The Suede Handbag
All things are coming up suede for fall, even handbags! Try out the trendy texture by way of J.Crew’s roomy tote or Khaite’s slouchy shoulder bag. Regardless of what you choose to pair these with, you can expect a sumptuous, sophisticated, and seriously stylish result each and every time.
The Striped Button-Up
Fashion’s favorite layering essential? An ultra-crisp striped button-up shirt. Style yours with a worn-in pair of jeans for the ultimate closet combination. Then, for added comfort, layer a slim-fit turtleneck underneath.
The Menswear-Inspired Loafer
For fall, menswear-inspired penny loafers are a fashion-girl favorite. Weejun’s preppy pick is especially chic, while Gucci’s Horsebit option is true-to-the-classics.
The Cool Corduroy
Corduroy for fall? Groundbreaking. Cords from La Ligne and J.Crew are cool but casual, pairing well with many several of the season’s standout shoe styles, from Mary Janes to retro sneakers.
The Jean Skirt
The jean skirt continues to be one of the most popular items amongst the fashion crowd, consistently in rotation by brands like Jacquemus and Loulou Studio. Don’t consider yourself a jeans girl? You’ve arrived at the right place.
The Layering Essential
A long-sleeve tee or slim-fitting turtleneck is a crucial—and oftentimes overlooked—It item to consider when crafting your fall capsule wardrobe. Both are as easily layered underneath chunky knits and oversized outerwear as they are tucked into a cozy pair of flannel pants or a leather midi skirt.
The Understated Shades
As stealthy as they are stylish, a pair of all-black sunglasses is the epitome of timeless chic. Saint Laurent’s retro black sunnies flatter any face shape, while Ray-Ban Wayfarers are a tried-and-true classic often seen at the Vogue office.
The Basic Black Flat
Sometimes you just can’t beat the basics. And what is more foundational in a wardrobe than a basic black ballet flat? Step into the new season with these effortless options from Mansur Gavriel and Everlane.
The Day Clutch
A chic clutch that can only be worn in the evening—eh, no thank you. But what about one that seamlessly crosses over into daytime elegance territory? Sign us up, ASAP. Not to mention that day clutches made their stamp on the spring 2024 runways with effortless ease. Choose the below from Loewe to Toteme.
The Gray Hoodie
It wasn’t until Miu Miu’s fall/winter 2023 collection that simple gray hoodies became a mainstay both on and off the runways. As seen at Miu Miu, style yours underneath oversized maxi coats and other cold weather-centric outerwear or simply pair yours with a black legging and ballet flat for casual weekend wear.
The White Jean
The secret to any chic capsule wardrobe is a go-to pair of denim—and these days, nothing is more casual-cool than white jeans. In ecru, ivory, or cream, the closet classic is a favorite amongst the It girls and the street style set.
The Moto Boot
Toughen up your fall looks with a moto, biker-inspired boot. Loewe’s Campo ankle boots look great with a straight-leg jean and simple sweater, whereas we recommend juxtaposing Frye’s signature buckle-detailed, Harness boots with something slightly daintier. Perhaps a sequin or sheer skirt and cute cardigan à la Prada and Miu Miu?
The Goes-With-Everything Leather Jacket
Eyeing an investment piece? A high-quality leather jacket can last decades, improves with age, and makes any outfit look effortlessly cool. You can always count on Banana Republic for luxurious and affordable leather, while Staud’s cropped, button-up blazer style offers up a more tailored take.
The Riding Boot
Ah, another black boot! You can never have too many. This time, all eyes (and shopping carts!) are turned to knee-high riding boots. The equestrian-inspired boot made waves on Gucci’s fall/winter 2024 runway with its glossy finish and signature Horsebit detailing—and now your fall capsule wardrobe. Otherwise, opt for Madewell’s version for under $300.
The Striped Sweater
The nautical-inspired striped sweater is a favorite among a handful of our very own editors; perhaps it’s because La Ligne’s striped knits have been perfected by two former Vogue editors. Cream-and-navy versions from Allude and Alex Mill are cozy choices, too.
The Denim Shirt
This piece of Western-inspired fashion has become a casual-cool mainstay in our closets as of late. A relaxed or oversized fit denim shirt is perfect for a transitional wardrobe.
The Personalized Pendant
A charming pendant necklace is unexpectedly flattering and feels substantive without overwhelming your neckline. Choose one with inherent meaning, or opt for whatever happens to catch your eye—such as these dainty gold nameplate necklaces.
The Leather Midi Skirt
Leather midi skirts are a closet mainstay amongst the street style set. Shin-grazing styles from Proenza Schouler and Reformation belong on your fall shopping list.
The Timepiece
While not necessarily considered a must-have, a wristwatch is the kind of investment piece that will resonate with your wardrobe no matter the decade.
The Kitten Heels
Kitten heels are the fashion crowd’s favorite shoe for low-key polish. From catwalk to closet, discover Tory Burch’s pierced slingback heels or Black Suede Studio’s minimalist off-white pair.
The Minimalist Earrings
The search for the perfect earrings is over. These small jewelry items will make a big impact and are low-key enough for everyday wear but equally appropriate for, well, everything else.
The Classic Crossbody
Every woman needs a sophisticated day bag that fits not only her essentials but her style. These are just a few of our editors’ favorites.
The Knit Polo
Knit polos are a polished option to the otherwise classic crewneck. A light and airy polo is a chic and understated choice, whether it’s Alex Mill’s slate gray style or Loulou Studio’s brushed alpaca-blend wardrobe essential.
The Modern Going-Out Top
On any given night, up your outfits ante with a sultry top. Try a refined version of the going-out top for yourself, courtesy of Róhe. Meanwhile, Ulla Johnson’s tailored bustier is elegant enough for any evening out.
The Party-Ready Mini
The season for party dressing is every season! Styling-wise, keep things sleek and pair these masterfully minimal options from Staud and Khaite with an evening bag and kitten heel.
The Evening Bag
Speaking of evening wear, a clutch, pouch, or mini bag is another essential with endless mileage. You can’t go wrong with something that shines, be it for a date night, wedding ceremony, or black-tie event.
The Heeled Sandal
An elegant evening sandal deserves to be in your rotation. Strappy styles, like these from Madewell and The Row, look just as good with a gown as they do with jeans and a T-shirt—who can resist versatility? Plus, it makes the cost per wear not so bad after all.
The Evening Jacket
Not a dress person? Consider an elegant evening jacket from Petar Petrov or Banana Republic instead. Styling-wise, might we suggest wearing the tailoring staple with everything from polished pants to minimalist miniskirts?
The Little Black Slip Dress
We dare you to think of a single occasion for which a slip dress isn’t appropriate—seriously, we’ll wait. Wear this ’90s-inspired staple with a plain white tee or a cozy sweater, or dress it up for one of the many weddings you’ll be attending in the new year.
The Mature Miniskirt
While the above-the-knee silhouette isn’t for everyone, there are many miniskirt options that feel polished—dare we say professional? (Perhaps in a fashion office.) Either way, we couldn’t leave out the miniskirt for this fall.
The Classic Black Swimsuit
There’s a time and place for loud colors and lively patterns, but a black swimsuit feels right, well, all of the time. It’s versatile, endlessly flattering, and communicates a sort of nonchalant elegance that’s tough to beat. Opt for Eres’ little black bikini or Anine Bing’s balconette one-piece.
The Versatile Silk Scarf
Wear it in your hair, around your neck, as a belt, top, or bag charm. Silk scarves like these can play many roles in a wardrobe, which is all the more reason to make sure you’ve got one.
The Invisible Underwear
We’ll admit it, Skims’s undergarments have become an instant hit among our editors. They are genuinely comfortable, lay perfectly flat, and are offered in a wide range of sizes and colors. Three for the price of one, Commando’s thong set is the best way to maximize foundational wardrobe pieces.
The Equally Cute and Comfortable Bra
Like a bralette but with more support, Cuup’s plunge bra is made of sheer power mesh that’s so comfortable you might forget you’re wearing anything at all. Meanwhile, Araks’s lace Tamara bralette is perfect for those peekaboo moments.
The Ultraluxe Sock
It’s important to have a nice sock that feels totally luxe without sacrificing function, and Comme Si’s and The Row’s do just that. Trust us when we say you’ll want to show these off with a loafer.

24 Stylish Outfits for Women for Fall Inspired by Fashion Icons
Fall outfit ideas are everywhere and all you need to do is look. As do concerts and movies, these platforms offer heaps of inspiration:
Instagram

Pinterest

7. Find the Right Jeans
