Blue: The Ultimate Color in Fashion Versatility

Blue reigns supreme in the fashion world because of its versatility. Depending on the hue, this color can convey a range of moods and styles. For instance, light blue shades evoke a casual, calming vibe, while navy and other dark tones exude elegance and authority. The different shades of blue can also be mixed and matched with other colors for many unique looks—light blue pairs well with pastels and warm colors for a cheerful summer vibe. However, dark blues can be combined with nearly any color for a sophisticated look perfect for office or formal occasions.

A Brief History of Blue

Blue has been a fashion staple since the ancient Egyptians. However, this color wasn’t always embraced. Due to its association with Viking face paints, blue was once considered barbaric and uncultured. Fortunately, time has been exceptionally kind to Blue. This color has become a standard fixture in nearly everyone’s wardrobe and one of the most common favorite colors. Blue symbolizes stability, trust, and strength.

The first recorded use of blue was by the ancient Egyptians, who created what we consider the first “synthetic” blue, aptly named “Egyptian Blue.” Historians believe it was made by combining sand, limestone, and copper and then processing the mixture with heat to transform it into a glaze. The Ancient Egyptians then ground the glaze into a powder and created a tempera by mixing it with egg whites. The result was a unique dye of blue that could emit a unique fluorescence when exposed to certain types of light. The 12th century saw the color blue boosted into more prominence, as it became the color of royalty and purple, where the term “blue blood” originates.

Blue was also a well-known color used in political and military clothing. A shade of blue that garnered quite an extravagant reputation is “true blue” or “ultramarine,” synonymous with elegance and beauty. This shade of blue became more prominent when it was used for the color of the veil of the Virgin Mary in the illustration “Virgin Mary and Child with Female Saints” by Gerard David (1500).

Blue is one of the most common colors used in the fashion industry. It has become the default color for specific types of clothing, such as jeans. Blue has also evolved, with many shades now present in modern fashion, allowing designers and consumers to mix and match the perfect combination of shades for their preferred attire.

Cool Blues vs. Warm Blues: What’s the Difference?

Blues can be cool or warm. Blue is traditionally cool, as proven by the color spectrum and its location in the wheel. By fabulous, we’re not saying that the color blue is trendy. Instead, we’re pointing to its aesthetic lack of warmth due to its lack of any shade of yellow. Yellow is on the opposite side of the spectrum and is considered one of the warmest colors.

However, you might have heard about the term “warm blue.” How could that be possible when blue is within the spectrum of cool colors? To simplify, warm blue is any shade of blue that incorporates a purple bias rather than green. Cool blue shades on the other side of the spectrum prefer green hues. Choosing between the two shades regarding clothing will depend on several factors, including your preference and skin tone.

For example, if you have warm-toned skin (skin has yellow undertones), you should consider going for warm blue. On the other hand, cool blue will complement your skin tone for cool-toned skin (pinkish or bluish undertone).

Different Shades of Blue and Their Fashion Potential

Blue comes in various shades, each with the aesthetic merit they bring into fashion design. Let’s go through the diverse spectrum of blue and introduce you to a handful of distinct ones that carry a certain level of finesse garments.

Light Blue Shades

Light blue has an almost ethereal charm and is considered a romantic color. A light blue hue can be achieved by mixing blue with other colors, primarily white. Below are some of the more notable shades under light blue.

Alice Blue

This is a rather pale blue tint favored by Alice Roosevelt Longworth, the daughter of Theodore Roosevelt, who is also a painter. Alice Blue has a rather cold and icy aesthetic.

Aqua Blue

This is a variation of cyan and blends blue and green hues. Aqua-blue and cyan are considered interchangeable due to how closely each shade looks alike.

Baby Blue

This shade of blue has a tinge of azure and features a soothing pastel aesthetic.

China Blue

Also known as Han blue, this light blue shade incorporates a cyan-blue mixture.

Celeste

This light shade of blue is akin to sky blue but with a more delicate turquoise undertone.

Lavender Blue

This shade resembles periwinkle blue and has a pastel purple-blue hue.

Powder Blue

Powder blue is a pale shade of blue that has some gray undertones.

Sky Blue

As implied by its name, sky blue captures the stunning beauty of a clear daytime sky.

Medium Blue Shades

Medium blue is a bright blue shade with high contrast with both black and white backgrounds. This particular shade of blue is closest to its pure blue light.

Blue-Gray

This shade is best described as dull lead-blue, similar to contused flesh—hence the expression “beaten black and blue.”

Blue-Green

This shade of blue has a deeper touch of cyan undertones and lies at the border, separating blue and green in the color wheel.

Celestial Blue

This medium shade of blue is defined by its pale iron-blue hue and has dark indigo-blue undertones.

Cerulean

Cerulean blue is notable for its bright, opaque shade and high greenish-blue undertone.

Florentine Blue

This shade of blue has a rather relaxing vibe. It is described as a twilight blue with purple undertones.

Frost Blue

As the name suggests, frost blue has an icy appeal, with its pale, neutral blue and slight indigo undertone.

Hydrangea

Named after the lovely flower, hydrangea is a blue shade with a balanced blend of pink and blue.

Slate Blue

This lighter shade of periwinkle blue combines a muted pastel blue with soft gray undertones.

Turquoise

This exquisite shade of blue blends together pale blue, green, and a touch of yellow hue.

Dark Blue Shades

As the name implies, dark blue is a shade with a shadier tint, achieved by combining blue with black. Dark blue exudes a sense of authority and dependability, which is probably why the military, law firms, and finance companies often use it for their motif and logos.

Capri Blue

This shade is best described as the more profound and darker version of sky blue. It is found between cyan and azure on the color wheel.

Cobalt

This dark shade of blue has a deeper tint, and you can distinguish a touch of greenish-blue undertone.

Delft Blue

This is a shade of blue that resides close to the violet spectrum in the color wheel. It is a combination of blue and magenta hue.

Marine Blue

Similar to aqua blue but darker, marine blue captures the shade of blue from the deeper parts of the ocean that light can barely penetrate.

Midnight Blue

Its low brightness and high saturation distinguish this shade of blue. It is slightly closer to black but has a richer hue.

Navy Blue

This is another dark shade of blue that is quite close to black. It comprises several colors, such as cyan, magenta, and black.

Prussian Blue

This shade of blue features a mix of neutral, deep, indigo blue with a pinch of cobalt undertone.

The Psychology Behind the Color Blue

Blue's Emotional Associations: What Do They Mean?

Blue evokes feelings of calmness, serenity, and peace. Unsurprisingly, these associations have affected our reactions to the color in clothing. In stressful situations, wearing blue can help you and those around you feel more relaxed. Studies have shown that looking at the color blue can reduce stress and lower blood pressure.

Blue can make you appear more approachable in fashion, especially in business settings. If you want to signal that you’re friendly and easy to work with, wearing blue to your next job interview or important meeting can help put others at ease.

Blue's Color Psychology: The Effect of Different Shades

While blue is universally calming, different shades can evoke different emotions. For example, light blue can be associated with tranquility and peace. It conjures images of the sky on a clear day and calm waters. Dark blue, on the other hand, is more closely linked to feelings of professionalism and reliability.

It’s a color that exudes confidence and authority. Navy blue, in particular, is a popular choice for business attire because it signals that you are capable and in control. These associations can make those around you feel more comfortable, as well. So, wearing dark blue to your next big meeting can help you feel more at ease but also help put others at ease, too.

Unpacking Color Combinations for Blue Hues

Blue comes in so many shades that it can easily be worn at any time of day and in any season. It can be as versatile as the most flexible neutrals while looking less severe. Below, you will find 11 colors that will complement blue incredibly well, no matter what look you are looking for.

1. Beige Matches with Blue for a Classy Look

What matches with blue? Beige and blue are a beautiful pairing, and the natural beauty of this combination is that beige can be worn with any shade you might have in your closet. This color pairing can satisfy a classy or casual look and be worn day or night—depending on the tone of blue—throughout all four seasons.

Beige worn with light blue—no matter which color is on the top or the bottom—is a super chic look for spring or summer. It is light, airy, and fresh. It is clean and straightforward yet fashionable. During winter or fall, choose a base piece in navy blue complemented by beige for a sophisticated look.

Beige is also an amazing color for accessorizing blue clothes. Beige shoes—in many different styles—will look perfect with blue pants, skirts, or dresses. A beige bag or jacket will also complement a blue outfit perfectly.

2. Black Creates a Chic Color Combo with Blue

Black is more dramatic and eye-catching, but it is also an excellent versatile neutral to pair with blue clothes. Black is another choice that will look good with any shade of blue, both light and dark. Consider pairing a black top with blue pants or skirts for a chic, fashion-forward look.

A blue top worn with any type of black pants would be just as great a choice. A black coat will pull together many blue-based outfits as well. And black shoes – of course – will pair well with an abundance of blue clothing choices.

3. White and Blue Create a Clean Summer Look

When paired with blue, white tends to feel a bit more summery, but that doesn’t make it any less of a beautiful combination. White pants shine when paired with a blue top – this look can be classy, confident, and sexy.

Any dress in a blue and white combo screams summer in the best way possible. It can easily be dressed up or worn casually. Blue and white are two colors that look like they were meant to be together.

4. Grey Matches with Blue for an Aesthetically Pleasing Contrast

Grey and blue work wonders when worn together. With the varying shades of both colors – another great thing about this combo is how seasonally versatile it is. It also means there are endless outfit possibilities between these two colors.

To create a desirable contrast, light grey should be worn with medium to darker shades of blue, and darker shades of grey should be worn with light blue hues. Remembering this tip will make any blue and grey outfit aesthetically pleasing.

5. Brown and Blue Create Classy Looks

Brown is a great color to pair with blue and can create classy and sophisticated looks. Similar to grey – the tones should be selected to create contrast. Darker brown pants will look best when paired with a top in a lighter shade of blue. Light brown bottoms will look great when worn with tops of darker blues. Consider brown patterns – such as tweed or herringbone – for some extra texture and interest.

6. Yellow and Blue Create Bright, Happy Outfits

Choose yellow for a bright pop of color that will stand out against cool blue tones. Pairing these two colors can create a tremendous head-turning outfit that will look incredibly stunning when worn in warmer weather.

Whether it’s blue, complementing yellow, or vice versa, this color combo will turn out a look that elicits joy. Pale yellows will work perfectly for spring outfits and can be paired with either light or medium and bright shades of blue. Darker, golden, mustardy yellows can be brought out in the fall and look especially lovely when worn with darker shades of blue.

7. Red and Blue Create a Bold Color Combination

Red is a bold color that can be daring when worn with blue, but it looks great. Red accessories are a great addition to a blue outfit—think red bags and shoes. Bright reds will stand out, but burgundy is also a great color to wear with blue if you want something slightly more subdued.

A dark red skirt with a blue top or a burgundy sweater worn with blue pants are both options that look sophisticated but not so patriotic.

8. Pink and Blue Create Fun, Playful Looks

A color in the same family as red will create an entirely different look when worn with blue. There’s no doubt that this combo says spring and summer – for these seasons, pink and blue can create many fun looks.

Tops and bottoms can be worn interchangeably between pink and blue, and there is a lot of variety to choose from with the varying shades of each color. Wearing lighter shades of both colors will give you a preppy look. Bright pinks will be bold and eye-catching.

9. Green Combines with Blue for a Cool Color Combo

Green and blue go great together. This colorful combo can be worn as bright blue with a darker shade of green – or a brighter green paired with dark navy. Either way – the colors will always complement each other well.

10. Purple and Blue Create a Soft, Chic Look

Another cool color that belongs besides blue is purple. This pair of colors works seamlessly together. Lavender is a great shade to pair, especially with darker shades of blue—this subtle pick will create a soft, chic look with many shades. Darker shades of purple will also go well with blue—jewel tones are the perfect color choice for cloudy, cool weather.

11. Blue and Orange Create Bold Looks

Orange is the perfect complementary color for blue. Perhaps the boldest of them all – thankfully, you can choose how much orange you want to incorporate into the outfit. If you’re feeling extra daring or have the perfect all-orange jumpsuit, consider wearing it with a blue jacket or shoes. On the other hand, if you’re looking to liven up an outfit that is mainly blue, this would be the perfect opportunity to introduce just a bit of orange.

Light blue is the perfect color for spring and summer. For easy, breezy outfits, pair your light blue clothes with other colors that work well for the season. White and beige are the perfect tones to wear in warmer weather – these two create looks that will make you feel relaxed. Other pastel colors can also give you an instant East Coast summer vibe.

It’s also a good idea to contrast your look – so light blue is a great choice to pair with darker shades. As seen above – so many different colors can work well with blue. Choose just about any color and go with a darker tone; it should go well with a light blue item. A light blue shirt will look good with darker-toned pants – charcoal, black, or mocha brown.

What Colors Go with Navy Blue?

Navy is easily a favorite when it comes to blue clothes. It is versatile, easy to wear, and flattering in many ways. Navy blue can be worn with almost any other color, though some tones look exceptionally good. Navy blue is also a dark color that works any time of year, so it is an excellent color for your wardrobe.

Neutrals Match Perfectly with Navy Blue

Neutrals—both dark and light—are ideal for navy blue. Pairing neutrals with navy will give you a sophisticated look that is great for dressing up or the office but can also provide the perfect bright casual look.

White and Navy Blue Create a Timeless Combination

White is the most classic color that can be worn with navy blue. White and navy are combinations that you could technically get away with at just about any time. But with an easily nautical vibe, it is the perfect choice for summer.

Beige is a Subtle Complement to Navy Blue

Beige is slightly more subtle than white—the contrast is not quite as stark—in a good way. Beige is an ideal complement to navy blue. The color combo is sophisticated and creates a clean and put-together look.

Black and Navy Create a Sophisticated Look

Black and navy blue can create a seriously sophisticated outfit. This combo is excellent for formal occasions. Choose a navy blue and black outfit if you’d like to look elegant and fashionable. When wearing these dark colors together, you can go with many combinations.

Grey Matches with Navy for a Sharp Look

Grey is another tone that looks good with almost everything—especially true with navy. Light grey is ideal, as this pairing will create an eye-pleasing contrast in the outfit. You can put either color on top or the bottom for equally pleasing looks. Darker greys can also be worn with navy blue—like black with navy, but on a more casual plane.

Warm Tones Complement Navy Blue

Warm tones tend to complement blue well – being a calm tone itself. These colors will add a welcome pop against different blue tones. Try combinations in various hues to see which shades work best together.

  • Red: Navy and red are pretty sophisticated pairs. They are often worn professionally, especially with a deeper red tone. For casual wear—and a good one for mid-summer—bright red and navy are classic.

  • Orange: Orange is about as opposite from blue as they come – which means anything but avoiding this pairing. Depending on how bold you feel, Orange in any shade contrasts with navy blue and can be added to outfits in small or large increments.

  • Yellow: Yellow and navy are another perfect complement. Yellow will brighten deep, dark navy – while navy blue will ground a super bright yellow. Whether you add a bit of yellow to a mainly navy look or vice versa, these colors create the perfect balance.

  • Pink: Possibly the most fun, girly, yet classy combination – navy blue and pink. Any shade of pink goes well with navy blue. From the most subtle pale hue to the brightest fuchsia shade, there is always just the right amount of contrast to make the look desirable.

Cool Tones Create a Calm Look with Navy Blue

These colors are in the same family as blue and will create an all-over cool look that should be easy to put together – and feel just as easy to wear.

Green

So many shades of green look great when worn with navy blue. Pale seafoam green is perfect for spring, and bright shades of green are a great combo for summer. Save the darkest shades of green to wear with navy blue when winter hits.

Blue

With so many different shades, you can wear blue with navy! Different levels of contrast can be achieved depending on your shades of blue. The good news is – everyone will match. You can create countless looks using blue alone – all over darker shades will look more monochrome than when wearing light or bright blue shades.

What Color Complements Navy Blue Dresses?

A navy blue dress is such a versatile piece of clothing – especially when considering accessorizing possibilities! One navy dress can be worn in so many ways. As a dark color base, lighter colors will provide contrast – an aesthetically pleasing look in fashion. White, beige, light grey, or light blue complement a navy blue dress well.

If you’d like to add a bit more pizazz to a navy blue dress, consider a pop of color. Complementary colors will be the perfect accent. An accessory or statement piece in any tone of orange would be ideal, though yellow, pink, or green could also bring a nice, colorful element to a navy blue dress.

What Colors Go with Blue Jeans?

Jeans are among the most beloved items in our closets—partly because they are so comfortable and versatile. Any color can be worn with blue jeans, but the wash of the jeans sometimes determines which colors look the best. Light or bright-colored tops look great with darker-washed jeans. For light washes, choose tops in darker hues.

You can also wear a monochrome look with jeans, though. Pairing a black shirt with dark jeans will look sleek. On the other hand, a white top with light-colored jeans will look light and clean.

What to Wear With a Blue Top?

A blue top is a versatile choice and can be worn with almost any color on the bottom. The most important thing to note is the blue’s shade and tone. Thankfully – the color is pretty forgiving. A light blue top will look ideal paired with darker bottoms – black, navy blue, dark brown, or green.

Bright blue could be worn over dark or light bottoms. The darkest blue tops will look best against bottoms in lighter colors – beige or tan, white, light grey, or just about any medium or light-tone color.

What Colors Go with Powder Blue?

Light blue + white

This is an undeniable combination that you will all know to pair, but I wanted to show you with a gorgeous lace top. This is a perfect date night or better than a bare top that is so versatile and looks so good with light powder blue

Remember, you could wear powder blue pants or light wash jeans if you don't have a powder blue skirt.

Powder blue + navy blue

I love a good monochromatic outfit, and pairing blue and blue together is always a good idea. These shades are dramatically different, which makes them work well together to create a balanced outfit. I paired them with some loafers for a workwear-style outfit.

Powder blue + olive green

I love this combination! I wasn’t sure if I would, but the soft olive green works well with the powder blue, and I chose nude pumps to go with it, not to add additional competing colors.

Powder blue + stripes

Stripes go with everything, and powder blue is no exception! This is a gorgeous and classic combination. I paired it with light-colored loafers for a more casual feel with the dressier skirt.

Powder blue + cream

Cream is another obvious choice that works with any color. The blue is quite icy here, so the cream softens it slightly. I chose a beautiful eyelet top with pleats in the skirt, and I love how this came together—feminine and springy.

Powder blue + black

Can you pair dark black with this light springy powder blue? YES! Just choose some black shoes to balance the outfit. I chose heeled sandals so the outfit didn’t feel bottom heavy with a clunky or heavy black shoe.

Powder blue + blush

Light blue and soft pink is an excellent, smooth, springy combination that you could create with pieces in your closet.

Powder blue + powder blue

Again, with the monochromatic, but this time, very literally! I have this powder blue turtleneck from Everlane and knew it would be perfect with this skirt to create a full light blue look. I just wish I’d added a skinny gold, tan, or white belt to break up all the blue! I didn’t think of it until after I took the pictures.

Powder blue + floral

I’m obsessed with this floral top from Mille, and I think it works perfectly with the blue in this skirt. Since it’s more of a bold look, I stuck with a neutral shoe.

Powder blue + slate blue

This is one of my favorite looks. The beautiful slate blue complements the icy blue perfectly. I chose a pair of woven neutral flats to finish the look, and I love how it came together.

Powder blue + hot pink

I wasn’t sure about this one when I put it on, but I loved it! The bold, bright pink, and icy blue create a fun and unexpected color combo! Again, since the outfit is bold, I chose neutral heels so they wouldn’t compete.

Powder blue + forest green

I adore this combination. The dark green and light blue are such a striking combination together, and I love them. If you do any of these combos, make it this one!

Light blue + chocolate brown

I wasn’t sure about this one, but I loved it once I put it together! The brown and blue are beautiful, and the square neck top is feminine and gorgeous against the skirt's pleats. I paired brown shoes with the outfit to balance the dark brown top.

Powder blue + burgundy

I considered pairing this skirt with bold red, but I didn’t like how it looked together. Burgundy, on the other hand, is a perfect pairing with the powder blue. If you have burgundy holiday pieces, try them with powder blue!

Navy Blue Outfits to Show the Shade Is More Versatile Than You Think

Tons of colors come and go when it comes to fashion, but one shade that always stays in style is navy blue. It continues to be a mainstay in our wardrobe year-round—and was for style icon Jackie Kennedy. We love the nautical hue, whether lying out in a striped navy and white swimsuit by the beach or bundling up in a knit navy sweater. However, despite this neutral being such a classic, deciding what colors go with navy blue can sometimes feel tricky.

The good news is that weird fashion rules like "never wear navy with black" have become outdated. We now know that there's only one thing to remember when wearing navy clothing: The color is versatile and looks great with everything. Street-style stars from New York to Tokyo have been stepping out in the timeless tone. They combine it with complementary and accent shades—from red and pink to beige and black. All the colors go with navy blue. Don't believe us? We've rounded up our favorite outfit ideas as visual evidence.

Navy Blue Blazer and White Button-Down Shirt

One of the most popular pairings is a navy blazer and a classic white button-down. For a casual vibe, consider combining the crisp, clean, and super sleek aesthetic with a denim midi skirt. Alternatively, a structured navy blazer over a white top or a navy sweatshirt with a white tennis skirt is a match made in heaven.

Navy Blue Blouse and Beige Trousers

The person wore a navy blue blouse, beige trousers, and a multicolored jacket. Two neutrals, like navy blue and beige, become show-stopping when worn together. Plus, you can amp up your look with vibrant footwear or accessories. To try out this color palette, wear a beige tank top with navy track pants or style a navy sweater with khaki pants and a handful of layered necklaces.

Navy Blue Outerwear and Black Dress Pants

A person wearing a long navy blue coat, black dress pants, and hot pink purse. Stepping out in a navy blue and black outfit was once considered a faux pas, but that's no longer the case. Instead, these colors create a striking and somewhat unexpected combination. Just look at this long navy coat and black dress pants. On the hunt for another option? Enjoy a lampshading moment with an oversized navy top and black bike shorts.

Navy Blue Jacket and Gray Athleisure

The person wearing a gray hoodie, cargo pants, and navy blue jacket shows what colors go with navy blue. Why not break up your gray sweatshirt with a navy jacket or wear a navy vest with gray trousers? A navy blue and gray duo always looks sharp, whether you're going casual or dressing up for the office. However, we recommend sticking with a lighter shade of gray to provide some contrast.

Navy Blue and Green Striped Shirt

Person with a navy blue and green striped shirt and polka-dot skirt. We're all about pattern-on-pattern outfits, and this striped-and-polka-dot look is just that. Regarding the color palette, deep navy, and bright green balance each other out. You can even try it as a green suit styled with a navy top or vice versa. When combining patterns, build balance into your look. For instance, if the print on one garment is large or loud, it may be better if the other is small or muted.

Navy Blue Dress and Brown Leather Jacket

The person is wearing a navy blue dress with a brown leather jacket and boots. A navy blue outfit need not be complicated. Head to your closet and pick out your favorite navy dress (a denim maxi, perhaps?). Then, combine it with brown leather accessories. Should you be stumped in footwear, brown boots are a winner when completing a navy outfit.

Navy Blue Blazer and Red Shirt

A person wearing a navy blazer with a red shirt and denim flares to show what colors go with navy blue. While somewhat nautical or patriotic, a little red magically makes blues brighter. We love this rendition with a classic navy blazer, red top, and a bandana for good measure. But a red jacket over a navy top or a red dress with a navy hat is also worth trying.

Navy Blue Minidress and Yellow Button-Down

The person wearing a navy blue denim dress over a yellow button-down to show what colors go with navy blue Yellow tends to pop when styled with almost any color. Yellow against a darker shade, though, will stand out. This navy blue denim dress accessorized with yellow sunglasses and heels is exciting and eye-catching. For a low-key look, try a navy sweatshirt with yellow cargo pants.

Navy Blue Dress and Pink Coat

A person wears a pink coat over a navy blue dress to show what colors go with navy blue. A pink jacket or coat over a navy dress—or a navy jacket over a pink dress—is a combination that's both timeless and modern. Reach for any shades of pink that will shine against this dark, neutral navy. Keep accessories neutral so you don't distract from the color blocking.

Navy Blue Jacket and Orange Turtleneck

A person wearing an orange turtle neck under an off-the-shoulder navy blue jacket Orange sits opposite blue on the color wheel. When styled together, they make quite the impact. Find outfit inspiration in an orange turtleneck styled under a navy jacket (or even a sleeveless dress). Try styling navy shorts with a bright orange corset top when things heat up.

Navy Blue Separates and Baby Blue Top

A person wearing navy blue separates, a baby blue top, and baby blue shoes. Add interest to your navy blue outfit by incorporating items in a lighter shade of blue. The color-blocked outfit will feel fashion-forward and versatile to wear to any event. At the same time, it'll come across as easy, effortless, cool, and calming.

Navy Blue Sweatsuit

A person wearing a monochromatic navy blue outfit with navy blue sneakers. When all else fails, going monochromatic is an easy outfit choice. The colors don't have to match—anything in the same color family will still come across as sleek and intentional. For example, a coordinating navy set with sneakers that includes navy details or a navy shirt with a chunky navy cardigan is foolproof.

How to Style Blue Outfits

Know Your Skin Tone for Choosing Blues

Every skin tone has its corresponding shades of blue that work best. For instance, lighter shades of blue can make darker skin tones look exceptionally radiant while washing out lighter skin tones. Darker shades of blue, on the other hand, can look less vibrant on dark skin tones, balancing out lighter skin tones instead. The key to finding the perfect shade to emphasize the beauty of your skin is to try on different shades. There are endless options to choose from, some of which may be surprising.

Trying on clothes in natural light will give you the best representation of how the clothes truly look. When putting together blue outfits, here are some tips for choosing the best shade according to your skin tone:

Fair, light skin tones

Lighter shades like baby blue, powder blue, and icy blue tend to be more flattering for those with fair skin. These soft hues create a fresh and luminous look.

Medium skin tones

Those with medium skin tones have the versatility to pull off a wide range of blue shades. Vibrant hues like turquoise or teal can add vibrancy and warmth, while deeper blues like cobalt or sapphire create a striking contrast.

Deep skin tones

Deep skin tones are complemented by rich, saturated blues such as royal blue, navy, and indigo. Bold shades create a stunning visual impact against deep complexions.

What Blues to Wear for the Season

Dressing in seasonally appropriate attire is another way to ensure you always look fashion-forward. While blue is versatile and can be worn anywhere, at any time – a light blue seersucker dress will never work in the middle of winter. Generally, if you want to play it safe, lighter shades of blue are ideal for warmer weather, and darker shades work well in autumn and winter. Of course, every rule has exceptions, so this should be considered a guideline rather than being followed without question.

Mix Fabrics and Textures for a Fresh Look

Boothe has some words of encouragement if you’re unsure about stepping out in a monochrome blue outfit: “Put yourself out there!” With blue, you can mix fabrics of different shades, textures, and patterns to create a dynamic look. Try wearing a blue cotton t-shirt with suede sneakers and broken-in jeans for a head-to-toe blue look that’s anything but one-dimensional.

Show Off Your Shape with Layers

Boothe suggests adding dimension to an all-blue outfit by layering clothes of different shades, silhouettes, and materials. “I’ll wear blue head-to-toe and style it so I can still see my body shape,” he explains if you’re concerned that a monochrome outfit won’t be flattering, use layers to accentuate your shape. For instance, says Boothe, try “a cropped jacket with a blue shirt and then high-waisted jeans” or an oversized hoodie with slim-fitting blue pants.

More Advice for Adding Blue to Your Style

Create brand-new looks with colors that complement blue for even more versatility. Pair blue with neutral shades of white, beige, black or gray, or let blue play a supporting role to even brighter colors. For ideas of what colors go with blue, check the color wheel. Yellow and orange, on the opposite side of the wheel, make excellent complements for blue. From baby blue to vibrant turquoise, what colors make blue?

Blue is a primary color that mixes with other primary colors to make secondary shades on the color wheel: blue and red make purple, and blue and yellow make green. The range of different shades of blue is endless, from muted shades of deep marine or pale sky to bright electric blue.

What Color Shirt Looks Best on a Blue Suit?

The Blue Shirt Approach: Matching a Blue Suit With a Blue Shirt

For men who like to look very smart nothing can quite compete with blue suits. Worn with contrasting blue shirts, suits of this color will definitely stand out from the crowd. If you're choosing this combination, opt for different shades of blue for a monochromatic look that is both classy and expressive.

The Timeless Pairing: Blue Suit With a White Shirt

Blue suits, especially navy, are chosen because they can be worn with any color shirt, white being a classic choice. A blue suit with a white shirt will make you look clean and polished when paired with or without a tie. Try a white patterned business shirt if you want to stand out. If you don't dare to try pale colors, go for a striped white shirt to bring a fresh style to your wardrobe.

The Bold Move: Blue Suit With a Pink Shirt

When you're in a blue suit and pink shirt, you're not just making a fashion statement; you're creating a masterpiece. The soft allure of pink strikingly complements the bold confidence of blue, creating a vibrant yet sophisticated look.

When to Wear

Do you have a summer wedding on the horizon? How about a brunch date or a stroll in a seaside town? This combo is your perfect pick. It's playful enough for casual outings yet dignified enough for semi-formal occasions.

Choosing Your Shade

Not all pinks are created equal. For a subtle, elegant look, think pastel or blush pink. Want to go bolder? Fuchsia might be your hue. Pair with a navy blue suit for a match made in sartorial heaven.

The Refreshing Choice: Blue Suit With a Pastel Shirt

Any light hues of colors like yellow, green, and purple will complement a blue suit. With pastels, the matching dark color tie will complete the outfit. For example, for a light or pastel purple shirt a dark purple tie will be the perfect finishing touch.

When to Wear

If you've been invited to an avant-garde event, a party where you want to stand out, or even a creative business meeting where tradition doesn't cut it, this pairing will have all eyes on you.

Mastering the Mix

The key to nailing this look is ensuring your patterns don't clash. If your suit has a subtle pattern, opt for a shirt with a more pronounced design, and vice versa. Remember, contrast is your friend.

The Sophisticated Edge: Blue Suit With a Black Shirt

The stark contrast of a black shirt with a blue suit is nothing short of magnetic. It's the perfect blend of mystery and sophistication, elegance with an edge.

When to Wear

Are you planning evening events, cocktail parties, or gala nights? This duo is your ticket to turning heads and capturing attention without saying a word.

Styling Tips

Accessorize with a silver or gray tie for a polished finish. The metallic sheen will bridge the blue and black, creating a harmonious ensemble.

The Fresh Spring Vibe: Blue Suit With a Pastel Green Shirt

Dive deep into the refreshing branch of pastel green paired with a blue suit. This combination is like a breath of fresh air, evoking feelings of spring gardens and new beginnings.

When to Wear

Ideal for daytime events, garden parties, or even a Sunday church service, this look is all about lightness and rejuvenation.

Styling Tips

To nail this combination, opt for a tie with hints of blue and green, seamlessly tying the outfit together. Add a white pocket square for that added touch of crispness.

Cozy Elegance for Chillier Times

As the leaves change and temperatures dip, your wardrobe can echo the season's richness. Think deep, warm tones such as burgundy, deep green, and rich gray. Coupled with a blue suit, these colors ooze sophistication, warmth, and nostalgia. Staying

Toasty & Trendy

It's not just about aesthetics. Pairing your blue suit with darker shirts helps retain warmth, ensuring you're stylish and snug during those colder months.

Business/Formal Events: Striking the Perfect Balance

When you're headed to a meeting or a formal gathering, the mantra is clear: Look professional yet stylish. A blue suit offers the perfect canvas for this. Opt for classic white, light blue, or striped shirts. These safe, evergreen choices scream competence while letting your personal style peek through.

Are you stepping out for a relaxed day or a casual evening? Here’s where you have the freedom to experiment. Think patterns, think contrasts, think bold. From polka dots to vibrant reds, this is your playground. The blue suit remains your constant, but what you pair it with can change with your mood and the setting.

Celebrating In Style

When it comes to occasions that are all about celebration and making memories, you want to put your best fashion foot forward. Look for shirts that make the blue of your suit pop. Think metallic hues, rich satins, or even a bold pattern. It's about making a statement, celebrating the moment, and maybe turning a few heads while you're at it.

Basic Color Coordination Principles

Color Wheel 101: Your Go-To for Matching Colors

The color wheel is an essential tool for coordinating outfits. The wheel features hues, or colors, arranged by their relationships to one another. Next to each hue are lighter and darker variants, known as tints and shades, respectively. Using the color wheel, you can combine outfits in a way that creates visual interest and balance. Here are the basic principles of color coordination:

Analogous Color Combinations

Analogous colors are next to each other on the color wheel. You can easily recognize when colors are analogous because they look the most alike. These colors are easiest to match because they’re so closely related. Just make sure the colors don’t match too closely, as it will create a mismatched look.

Complementary Color Combinations

Complementary colors are opposite each other on the color wheel. They have the strongest contrast between them. Because complementary colors have such a strong contrast, they are the boldest combination you can make, which can create a color clash if you combine two at too high an intensity. The best way to combine complementary colors is to contrast their brightness. These colors look best together when one is darker or lighter or more muted than the other.

Triadic Color Combinations

Triad colors combine three colors that are equally distant from each other on the color wheel. Contrary to common perception, you don’t have to wear all three colors for this combination to work. You can pick two colors from a triad and wear them together. In fact, beginners should combine two triadic colors rather than attempting to wear all three, as it’s more difficult to pull off and requires a trained eye. For triad combos as well, make sure to apply some contrast in intensity. They work best when one color is lighter or darker than the other.

Monochromatic Color Combinations

You can also combine colors that all belong to the same hue but differ in intensity, creating a monochromatic outfit. For example, you could pair light blue with dark blue or a muted green with light green.

Understanding Hues, Tints, Shades, and Tones

First, you need to learn the basic principles of color combinations. You should familiarize yourself with the following terms:

  • Hues are colors in their most pure, vivid form. They are colors at their fullest intensity. You might know them as bold colors.

  • Tints are hues that have been mixed with white. You’ll know them as light colors or pastels.

  • Shades are hues that have been mixed with black. These are dark colors.

  • Tones are hues that have been mixed with white and black, creating gray undertones. These are also called muted colors.

  • When combining colors in your clothes, you should always aim for a contrast in the intensity of your colors.

Putting the Color Wheel to Work for You: Blue Outfits

Now that you understand the basics of color coordination let’s look specifically at how to use these principles to coordinate blue outfits.

Analogous Color Combinations

For blue, the colors that would create an analogous combination include green and purple. You might try a blue top with a light purple cardigan and soft green accessories.

Complementary Color Combinations

Orange is a complementary color to blue. Use this color combination to add some pop to your outfit. For instance, you might pair a royal blue skirt with an orange-striped top. Or try a blue dress with an orange belt for a stylish look.

Triadic Color Combinations

The triadic colors for blue are red and yellow. Incorporating this color combination into your wardrobe with a blue dress, yellow accents, and red accessories is one way.

Monochromatic Color Combinations

Creating monochromatic outfits with blue is a contemporary way to play with color variation. Here’s how to pull off the monochromatic look with ease:

  • Start by selecting a dominant shade of blue to serve as the base of your outfit.

  • Incorporate lighter shades to add dimension and visual interest.

  • Choose complementary accessories in varying blue hues.

  • Mix different textures to add depth to your blue outfit.

  • Consider incorporating blueprints or patterns.

Tips for Coordinating Colors with Blue

When it comes to coordinating colors with blue, you have several options. Here are some stunning combinations to try out:

White

Crisp and clean, white pairs effortlessly with blue. Try pairing a blue blouse with white linen clothing for a classic summertime look.

Neutral tones

Shades like gray, taupe, and beige provide a subtle backdrop for blue. Consider pairing a navy skirt with a beige sweater for an understated professional ensemble.

Black

Combine black and blue for a bold and dramatic look. Wear a deep blue blouse with black pants for a sophisticated, sleek outfit.

Metallics

Silver and gold accents can add a touch of glamor to blue clothing. For a luxe evening look, boost your blue dress outfit with gold jewelry, or pair a navy top with silver shoes for a modern twist.

Complementary colors

Colors like orange and yellow can create striking and unexpected combinations. Try pairing a royal blue top with a mustard yellow cardigan for a bold and vibrant look.

Setting the Mood with Different Shades of Blue

Different shades and types of blue clothing can help set the mood for any event on your calendar. Here’s how you can choose the right blue for the occasion:

Light blues

These colors are ideal for soft, romantic looks, daytime events, and laid-back outings. They also make great choices for vacation and casual resort wear.

Mid-tone blues

Suitable for both casual and semi-formal events, such as garden parties, afternoon weddings, or dinner dates.

Deep blues

Exuding elegance, deep blues are perfect for more formal occasions, such as cocktail parties, galas, workwear, or formal events.

Denim

Denim is the ultimate versatile clothing material. It can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion, from weekend brunches to shopping trips, outdoor concerts, and more.

The Best Blue Suit Shirt, Shoes & Tie Combinations

man in blue shirt - Blue Used in Fashion

Best Shirts To Wear With A Blue Suit

When it comes to pairing shirts with a blue suit, the options are endless. While you can’t really go wrong with any color other than green or mustard yellow, crisp white shirts or any light pastel color are classy, complementary choices that allow your blue suit shine. And here, we’re not just talking about solid colors. Subtle patterns like polka dots or small stripes also look great. Large, bold stripes? Leave those to the bankers.

Simple Rules To Follow When Wearing A Blue Suit

Aim for a crisp white shirt or a lighter shade of pink or blue. These colors create a little contrast, allowing your blue suit to pop. When it comes to ties, the world is your oyster. The safest options are black or navy, but red, burgundy, and greens can also be incorporated if you’re looking to add some pops of color.

Both black and brown shoes can be worn with blue suits, and lace-ups or loafers are also fine shoe styles. Finally, if your suit is well-fitted and shorter in the legs and body, feel free to wear a polo shirt and some sneakers with it. It will make a nice change in the summer.

What To Look For When Buying A Blue Suit

Avoid shades that don’t work for business e.g. no baby or electric blues. Choose a good quality cloth to avoid rubbish and shiny fabric. Choose a suit that you can separate for different occasions Cotton and linen suits are better for summer, while wool and cashmere blends are more appropriate for winter. Avoid polyester. Go for a patch pocket suit jacket if you want to try something different.

Wearing A Blue Suit With A White Shirt

The blue suit and white shirt combination is always a winner. It’s classic and requires the least amount of effort for a man. Ensure the shirt is well fitted and that a touch of shirt cuff can always be seen. If you’re not wearing a tie, a larger collar is helpful to ensure it stays tucked underneath the blazer lapels at all times.

Another winning suit and shirt combination is the blue suit and blue shirt one-two knockout punch. It keeps the tones cool and complementary and allows you to have some fun with your pocket square. Go wild, we say. Opt for cufflinks for more formal occasions and buttons for the workday. Here you can opt for a dark navy blue shirt, too, especially if it’s an evening event.

They say real men wear pink. And we agree. The pink shirt is more suited to the daring gentleman who likes to make a bold statement. A bright blue suit and a bright pink shirt may be too much, so choose whether you want the suit to shout or the shirt. Complete the look with a purple or blue tie. Don’t feel like your pocket square needs to be pink, too. Have some fun here; maybe go for blue.

A great option for an evening event is the black shirt with a navy blue suit. Think James Bond does a cocktail party. This works best with dark grey or black shirts combined with navy and darker tones of blue suits. It’s a safer option than brighter and lighter blue suits.

Polka dots, stripes, texture or just plain tie will all work with a blue suit. Your challenge is to find the best colour to match your suit’s fabric and texture. If you want a loud shirt and tie combination then ensure your suit is plain, if you have a loud suit, then opt for fewer patterns and bright colours/patterns on your tie.

Wearing A Blue Suit With A Blue Tie

Classic and elegant, blue on blue on blue is always a winner. Our recommendation is to choose a tie with a heavy texture. It will help separate the blue suit and blue tie, giving you an interesting look. You’ll soon notice how many people comment on how they love the texture of your tie.

Wearing A Blue Suit With Red, Burgundy & Pink Ties

For the sake of simplicity, we’re grouping the ‘reds’ into one category. This includes brown, salmon, and coral. The short answer is that red ties match a blue suit better than any other suit color. The red-tie-blue suit combo is also a favorite of Donald Trump. It’s known as the ‘power look.’ Wear it with pride in the workplace; however, if you want to be more discreet and relaxed, we recommend pink, coral, brown, or burgundy.

Wearing A Blue Suit With a Black Or Grey Tie

The blue suit with a black tie doesn’t scream creativity. It’s more of a classic look more suited to the office than a day at the races or a fancy cocktail party. In some cases where your blue suit has a little more flair, then the black tie can be a perfect combination (see above). Alternatively a blue suit and grey tie combination is best worn with a grenadine or heavy textured type of tie. The texture will subtly draw attention to your look without the need for stripes or bold color.

Bonobos Premium Necktie: Pair it with your favorite suit, and you’ll have an impeccably sharp, highly handsome ensemble.

Brown or black is the question.

Honestly, there is no right or wrong answer when it comes to this. We would recommend brown over black if your suit is a lighter color. If your suit is dark or navy blue, then a very dark brown or black shoe is better. Brogues, monk straps, oxfords, or loafers will be the styles of choice. Ensure they have a nice shine and a more rounded shape.

What Are the Different Shades of Blue Used in Fashion?
