A Word About Fashion Trends
Fashion trends constantly change. However, they can take time to trickle down to mainstream retailers, where the everyday women who read this blog tend to shop. Depending on where you live, you may feel like some of these are already on their way out, or you may not see anyone wearing them yet, but they’re all prevalent in mainstream retail stores such as Evereve, LOFT, Anthropologie, etc.
Of course, just because something is “having a moment” doesn’t mean you have to wear it. This is just information to do with, as you will. Stylish women know what’s trending and then selectively choose to incorporate into their wardrobes the ones that best align with their personal style, body type, lifestyle, etc. ‘
Finally, this is meant to be a partial list of fall trends. Plenty of items I don’t list here are still current, but these are the ones that stand out to me and resonate with my style preferences. You should wear what you love, whatever the “trend reports” say. But if you enjoy knowing what is current, here are 12 wearable 2024 fall fashion trends for the everyday woman.
2024 Fall Trends: What’s In
1. Wide Leg Jeans
You knew I had to start here, didn’t you? Yes, my friends, wide-leg silhouettes continue to dominate the denim departments at my favorite retailers, and I’m slowly starting to see more everyday women embrace them. I’m also noticing more full-length styles arriving on the scene for fall, and I’m pleased about that because I find them much easier to style with boots and other closed-toe shoes.
Plus, they’re elongating and flattering on most women. We will discuss denim trends later this week, but if you aren’t a fan of wide-leg jeans, pretty much anything goes right now. Looking current is more about how you style your jeans than your style.
2. Cropped Jackets
Outfit-completing jackets are essential to my fall wardrobe. Cropped jackets are returning this year because they pair so well with wide-leg and high-rise denim styles. I also like how they look in flares and straight-legged jeans. I’m seeing everything from twill to wool blends, and denim is around, too.
3. Skirts
After being on the back burner for quite a few years, skirts are an essential wardrobe category for fall 2024. I see many denim skirts in all lengths, but the long, straight styles are everywhere. The satiny bias-cut skirts are still around, and pleated skirts are gaining traction. Mini skirts are popular too.
You can wear your skirts with knee boots to sneakers, from pointy-toe slingbacks to squared-off Mary Janes, and for both dressy and casual purposes.
4. Vests
Vests were strong for spring but were a little hard to find, and the good ones sold out fast. This fall, they’re everywhere. I’m seeing a lot of suit vests, like the one shown above, and sweater vests are still going strong, too. Wear your vests as stand-alone tops and layer them over a tank or tee this fall.
As far as what to pair with them, I’m seeing a lot of vests (both sweater vests and suit vests) worn with denim skirts, as shown above. They also look great with jeans, or you can wear them with trousers (matching or not) for a suitable look for work or dinners out.
5. Breton Stripes
Stripes, especially Breton stripes, are still going strong into fall. This is an easy way to add a current piece to your existing wardrobe, and there are many options for different widths and placements to flatter any body type.
6. Pop of Red
We’ll discuss color trends later this week, but red dominates all trend lists. While you can find plenty of red tops and dresses, it’s more relevant to incorporate a red accessory as a pop of color. Try a red sneaker, a red Mary Jane (as shown above), a red sling bag, a red belt, or even a red ball cap.
7. Trousers
Relaxed trousers are still going strong this season, and the most fashion-forward way to wear them is with sneakers for that chic element of juxtaposition, but this is also good news for those who need work wear. There are so many good non-denim options out right now. If you don’t like the relaxed silhouettes, you can also find straight and flared styles. The LOFT Sutton Flares that I styled last spring are back for fall in a subtle brown and black checked pattern.
8. Ladylike Shoes
Pointed-toe flats and kitten heels, especially slingback styles, are big again this season, as are Mary Janes and ballet flats. Wear them with jeans for a chic element of juxtaposition, or pair them with skirts or dresses to lean into the “era of elegance” gaining momentum.
9. Textured Knitwear
I haven’t seen this cited in any of the trend lists I read, but I noticed as I perused my favorite retailers that knitwear has a lot more texture and pattern. The trend pendulum is returning to more exciting details and less minimalistic styles.
10. Brown Footwear & Accessories
Shades of brown and vibrant chocolatey tones are taking over in the footwear sphere this season. I noticed this last year, but it’s coming in strong for fall 2024, and I’m all about it. After years of wearing so much taupe and light beige, I feel these deeper, warmer tones are fresh and fun. They also pair nicely with the darker denim washes returning this season.
11. Leopard Print
Yep, the leopard was gone for a minute, and it’s back. I simply can’t ignore it. It is on almost every 2024 Fall Trends list I’ve seen, and all major retailers carry leopard prints in some iteration or another. Now, you may be thinking: Leopard was never gone. It’s a classic. Well, yes, leopard is a classic print that is always out there, but it was having such a significant moment a few years ago that it suddenly disappeared from the major mainstream retailers.
That’s usually how it goes when a style suddenly becomes everywhere. And as with most trends, when reintroduced, they look slightly different than they did the last time they were having a moment. Leopard prints look somewhat more sophisticated, abstract, and elegant this time.
So, if you have leopard print pieces in your closet and you’re wondering if they look current, the best advice I’ve heard is to compare them to what you see in the stores that best represent your style. I gave away all of my animal prints, even my beloved ATM cheetah tee that I kept for several seasons, so I’m starting from scratch in that department. I don’t plan to buy a ton of leopard this season, but I might add one or two carefully chosen pieces to my fall wardrobe.
Just remember, trends are just that. They come and go, and some stick around longer than others. If it’s not your style, just skip it. Not sure? Test it with something less expensive before you commit to a higher-priced item. But if any of those trends feel like your style, you might want to lean into those a bit more over the next few months.
What’s OUT For 2024
I almost deleted this section this year because the trend cycles are moving so quickly that nothing is really “out” exactly. Certain styles may look tired to some of us or not as prevalent in stores. So, just like “What’s IN for 2024,” this list should be taken with a grain of salt.
No one tells you not to wear your favorite low-shaft taupe ankle boots with the cut-outs on the side. You do you. But if you want to know some of the styles taking a backseat to the top trends right now, I feel like this is a pretty good place to start. circa 2018
1. Taupe Shoes and Boots
It’s not that you don’t see any of these options, and they don’t necessarily look dated, but the deeper browns and warmer tones are more on trend right now. They’re also an easy way to update your footwear because you can find almost any shoe style in brown right now.
2. Low Shaft Booties
They worked well with the ankle-length skinny jeans that dominated the fashion scene for so many years that we got used to thinking of lower-shaft booties (3″ or 4″ shaft) as the default, but they’re not as classic as ankle boots with the more traditional 5″ or 6″ shafts. And now that wide legs and flares are predominant, we’re seeing the return of higher-shaft ankle boots.
3. Jeggings
You may be hearing the buzz that low-rise skinny jeans are coming back, but they are very much on the fringe right now, and whether they make it back into the mainstream remains to be seen. If you do wear skinny jeans, a modern way to wear them is with a higher rise and with more of a slim straight cigarette leg, not the skin-tight legging style (jeggings) that we were wearing with long tunics and low-shaft ankle boots in the 2010s.
4. Tunic Tops
Tunic tops went the way of skinny jeans, probably because they pair so well. This look wasn’t flattering on most of us, so I’m more than happy for this one to stay a thing of the past, although I’m sure it will eventually come around again in some way, shape, or form.
5. Long Cardigans
Long cardigans aren’t fashion-forward right now, but sometimes they make sense. Like any other classic style that isn’t trending, wear them with modern pieces if you love them.
6. Moto Jackets
I’ll probably get some flack for this one, but while moto jackets are a classic, they look tired. I also noticed that the iconic All Saints Dalby was part of the #NSale this year, and it usually sells out lickety-split, but it was fully stocked through the sale. A more current alternative is a bomber jacket or a boxy cropped jacket.
7. Shackets
I still see some shackets, but most are not the big oversized ones that were all the rage a few years back. The boxy, cropped shirt jackets like this KUT from the Kloth Zinnia look more current.
8. Leggings As Pants
They should have never been a thing, but they aren’t something I see right now unless worn as athleisure. Of course, teenagers still wear them, but this blog is geared toward grown-up women who want to look polished and put together. If that is you, I would save my leggings for the gym. Or, if you wear them out and about, top them off with a chic trench or wool car coat. A more current look would be a pair of quality Ponte pants.

10 Summer to Fall Fashion Tips
1. Stay Cool with Airy Fabrics in Earthy Tones
While the temperature is still high, one of the best fall fashion tips is to focus on lightweight layers and versatile pieces. For example, you can start incorporating fall colors and textures into your outfits while still choosing breathable and airy fabrics. Think about adding earthy tones such as rust, mustard, and olive to your wardrobe, and look for lightweight materials like cotton and linen.
2. Incorporate Seasonal Pieces for Balance
Mixing seasonal pieces is another great way to bridge the gap between summer and fall. Pair a lightweight summer dress with a denim jacket or a lightweight cardigan for those cooler evenings. You can also add ankle boots to your outfits while wearing breezy dresses or shorts. This creates a nice balance between your wardrobe's summer and fall elements.
3. Bridge the Gap to Fall with Accessories
Accessories can also play a significant role in transitioning your look from summer to fall. Consider adding a felt hat, a lightweight scarf, or some statement jewelry to your outfit to give it a more autumnal feel without adding too much warmth.
4. Layer UNDER It
You should take your sleeveless (or short-sleeved) dress or top and put a long-sleeved layer underneath. I find a slim button-up or tissue turtleneck to work best. The goal is to add a layer but not add extra bulk. Shorts and mini dresses can also benefit from a layer to take them into the cooler weather. A sheer tight top looks super chic. And the bonus, if you’re like me and not a big fan of my legs, is that the tights serve as camouflage, so bring on the short(er) skirts and tights; I’m all for it!
5. Layer OVER It
Again, your sleeveless piece that reigned supreme over the summer can still be heroes in the autumn. Adding a topper (like a third piece) gives your sleeveless clothes purpose and warmth in the fall. And the topper (as in a blazer, leather jacket, or sweater) also adds an element of interest to the outfit. I also like to add a cropped sweater or a t-shirt (tied at the waist) as another over-it option. I put a cardigan over a spaghetti strap dress in the segment, but backward. The higher neckline gave the outfit a cozier feel.
6. Close The Toes
You can wear sandals in the warmer fall, especially if your outfit is balanced with 12-month fabrics and grounded colors. But if you want to bring your summer outfits into fall, swap sandals for booties or boots. Hiding the piggies (as in this little piggy went to market) makes an outfit feel more fall.
7. Denim and transitional pants
When you start to put your shorts away for the season, switching out to lightweight trousers or cropped denim can provide more coverage but won't be too heavy for some of the warmer weather that might linger or show up unexpectedly -- trending denim like the barrel jean cut (which we saw a spike in the early summer) is a fun way to add trend to your essentials.
8. Add A Cozy Knit Cardigan & A Fall Shoe
A tried and true fall favorite combo, a cozy oversized cardigan with loafers. It’s the ultimate Grandpa-style hack, and I love it. Adding a knit cardigan over any of your summer dresses will help you transition them easily.
9. The 9-5 Trick With A Boyfriend Blazer and Loafers
One of my favorite tops this past summer was my ruffle eyelet top from Madewell. I’m not ready to give it up just yet, so I’m transitioning this look from summer to fall with a few favorites that are great for the office.
10. Go For Long Sleeves, Booties & Fall Hues
A denim skirt has to be one of my favorite pieces in my closet. You can’t wear this into the winter unless you add tights, but for fall, it’s great. I always gravitate towards a denim mini for those warm fall days that linger here in the South. Swap your colorful sandals and tee for a ribbed sweater and booties to take a denim mini from summer to fall. This would also be perfect with OTK boots and an oversized cozy scarf for extra warmth once the weather cools off. But this lightened-up version is excellent for hot fall days and feels seasonally appropriate.

Stylist's Guide to Building the Perfect Fall Capsule Wardrobe
1. What is a Capsule Wardrobe?
A capsule wardrobe isn't just a fancy term; it's a practical philosophy that simplifies your daily routine while enhancing your style. Understanding what a capsule wardrobe entails and learning how to create one is a great way to boost your clothing confidence and an exciting opportunity to rediscover your unique style. A capsule wardrobe is a curated collection of essential clothing items that are versatile, timeless, and designed to mix and match effortlessly. The concept, popularized in the 1970s by Susie Faux, the owner of a London boutique, promotes a minimalist approach to fashion, emphasizing quality over quantity.
A typical capsule wardrobe consists of a limited number of high-quality pieces that can be worn in various combinations to create a wide range of stylish outfits. It reduces decision-making stress, promotes sustainability, and allows individuals to define their style. It often includes basics like tops, bottoms, outerwear, and accessories that transcend seasonal trends, complemented by a few seasonal items to refresh the wardrobe as needed.
2. The Benefits of a Capsule Wardrobe
A capsule wardrobe simplifies things. You'll have a handful of versatile pieces that make getting dressed a breeze. No more staring at a messy wardrobe each morning. Goodbye, stress! So, when you wake up in the morning, your fashion choices are a breeze. You've handpicked several clothing items you adore and know look fabulous. No more impulse buys or items that you wear once and forget.
These are the real MVPs of your wardrobe. Whether it's a Monday meeting, a casual Friday, or a spontaneous dinner date, your capsule wardrobe has you covered. Constant shopping can hurt your bank account and the planet. But with a capsule wardrobe, you invest in quality pieces that save you money in the long run and help the environment. The sad fact is that once this clothing is discarded, 66% of it is sent to landfills.
A capsule wardrobe helps you define your style by focusing on what you love. It's like having a wardrobe that speaks your language. And if that isn’t motivation enough, research shows that your clothes can change how you feel and perform.
3. Building Your Capsule Wardrobe
Now that you're convinced about the awesomeness of a capsule wardrobe let's roll up our sleeves and get practical. We'll walk you through creating your fall capsule wardrobe, from picking your core pieces to getting creative with outfits.
Step One: Declutter Your Wardrobe
The first step in building a capsule wardrobe, whether fall or any other time of year, is to remove pieces from your closet that you’re ready to say goodbye to. This can be easier said than done if you’re like many of us. Start small and give away pieces you’re confident you don’t want anymore. How about beginning with the pieces that don’t fit you anymore? Or purging those old holiday t-shirts that you only wear once a year? Don't worry – the more you declutter, the easier it will be to part ways with other unnecessary pieces.
What To Donate, Sell, Or Recycle: Pieces that don’t fit, Items you only wear once a year, Older pieces that are similar in color or style to something else you own, Pieces that are stained, damaged, or you question when you put them on, Items you don’t like. Once you’ve made a dent in decluttering your closet, the next step is to organize the clothing that you have left into categories. This will help give you an idea of what you already have and where you need to fill the gaps.
Wardrobe Clothing Categories: Include bottoms (pants, skirts, and non-denim bottoms), Denim (short & long), Coats and jackets, Dresses and jumpsuits, Sweaters, Tops and blouses, Tees and tanks, and Shoes.
Step Two: Determine Your Color Palette
The influence of colors on our appearance cannot be understated. Choosing the right colors for your wardrobe extends beyond merely making your skin glow and your eyes sparkle. It also significantly simplifies the process of constructing a versatile capsule wardrobe. When we talk about the profound impact of colors, it encompasses various aspects. Firstly, colors are pivotal in harmonizing our natural features, bringing out the best in our complexion, and highlighting our unique beauty.
The right hues can create a visual synergy, making you look and feel your best. However, the importance of color selection goes far beyond aesthetics. It extends to practicality and minimalism, particularly when considering a capsule wardrobe. This minimalist approach to fashion involves curating a collection of essential and versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched effortlessly. In this context, choosing the right colors is paramount. Consider having a wardrobe where every piece effortlessly complements the others, allowing you to create numerous outfits with minimal effort.
This is the beauty of a well-curated capsule wardrobe, where the color palette is carefully considered. By focusing on a select range of colors that harmonize with your complexion and personal style, you can significantly reduce the time and effort required to create a chic and coordinated look each day.
Step Three: Select Your Core Capsule Pieces
After decluttering your closet and determining your color palette, it's time to pick out the clothing items you'd like to incorporate into your capsule wardrobe. As you select, prioritize high-quality essentials that offer both practicality and versatility. Practical clothing should align with your daily needs, while versatile pieces complement other items, providing various styling options and suitability for different occasions. Remember that you're curating your capsule wardrobe for the current season, so focus on one category at a time. This approach makes the selection process more efficient and allows you to identify favorites, eliminate duplicates, and pinpoint any missing items more effectively when you evaluate everything together.
1. Bottoms
They are the cornerstone of your outfits and an excellent place to assemble your capsule wardrobe. Here are some tips for selecting bottoms for your capsule wardrobe:
Choose bottoms that fit comfortably and can be easily paired with multiple tops, sweaters, jackets, and tees.
Neutrals often offer greater versatility compared to bold prints or bright colors.
Keep in mind that different seasons may require different types of bottoms.
For instance, think about lighter, flowy trousers for warmer months and sturdier options for colder weather.
Focus on the bottoms needed for the current season and set aside others for future consideration.
Here are some critical bottom options to consider for your fall capsule wardrobe:
Classic black seasonal trousers
Lighter-colored seasonal trousers (white, off-white, beige, or taupe)
Wide-leg tailored pants
Versatile knee-length skirt, midi skirt, or maxi skirt (these lengths provide greater versatility than mini skirts.)
2. Denim
It is another cornerstone of your capsule wardrobe. Picking out a daily outfit often involves deciding whether to wear denim or non-denim. Here are some tips for picking the perfect denim pieces for your capsule wardrobe:
To maximize your versatility and adaptability, consider having a variety of denim washes.
Dark, medium, light, and black or other neutral colors offer the flexibility to dress up or down with your choice of tops.
Identifying the brands and styles that flatter your body best is crucial.
If you have yet to find a few pairs of denim jeans you adore, we recommend visiting several stores and trying on as many as possible.
This exploration will help you determine preferred brands, styles, inseams, rises, and washes. If you own multiple pairs of the same style or wash, retaining only the best-fitting one is a good idea. If the others are in excellent condition, consider donating or selling them.
Denim We Recommend & Love
Levi’s is a classic staple
Madewell is our go-to, and it’s produced responsibly
Zara is affordable and trendy
Agolde is when we want to splurge, and it’s also produced responsibly.
3. Coats & Jackets
Having the right assortment of coats and jackets ensures you're well-prepared for changing seasons while adding a stylish layer to your outfits.
Here are some tips for picking the best coats and jackets for your fall capsule wardrobe:
Identify jackets that can be your go-to options for the current season and beyond.
Store the coats and jackets you won't need this season separately in your closet to revisit them when the time is right.
Weight and color play a significant role in outerwear selection.
If you live in a place with distinct seasons, having a variety of weights is essential, although you'll likely only need a couple for each season.
Neutrals always provide greater versatility than prints and bold colors, although a neutral plaid blazer can also be quite versatile (especially during the holiday!)
Here's a list of jackets and coats to add to your capsule wardrobe
Versatile Blazer
Denim Jacket
Neutral Lightweight Jacket
Lined
Midweight Jacket
Leather Jacket
Fleece Jacket
Heavier Winter Coat.
4. Dresses & Jumpsuits
This category tends to be a bit easier since most of us aren’t wearing dresses daily, which can make this category feel less overwhelming. Dresses and jumpsuits are great transitional pieces that can carry you through the season and help address the unpredictable nature of changing temperatures. Here are some tips for selecting dresses and jumpsuits for your fall capsule wardrobe:
Pay attention to dresses that offer flexibility in dressing up or down.
Consider the length – midi-length dresses are flattering and more adaptable for various occasions compared to the traditional "little black dress" or long dresses.
Prioritize neutral dresses that are either sleeveless or short-sleeved. These dresses can be easily layered under a cardigan, blazer, or jacket, making them versatile across different seasons.
Solid-colored dresses tend to be the most versatile but only consider a floral or fun print if you can style it in multiple ways.
Floral dresses are typically worn in the spring and summer, but darker floral prints paired with a cute sweater or bomber jacket can be great for the fall.
Here's a selection of key dresses and jumpsuits to consider for your capsule wardrobe
Black sleeveless midi dress
Maxi dress (perfect from spring to fall)
Classic mid-length a-line dress
Slip skirt
Sweater dress (great for fall/winter).
5. Sweaters
The proper selection of sweaters can infuse warmth and a touch of style into any ensemble, making them pivotal pieces for your wardrobe. Sweaters also play a vital role during transitional seasons, seamlessly elevating your fashion game. Consider this: draping a nice sweater over a summer slip dress while slipping into a pair of boots, and you've effortlessly transformed your look for the fall. Now, let's talk about seasonal versatility.
Your sweaters may vary from one season to another. Lighter, flowy sweaters and cardigans take center stage during the warmer months, while the colder seasons call for thicker, chunkier knits. Each season, a few neutral sweaters in different weights will suffice. Here's a selection of key fall capsule sweaters to consider:
Light Knit
Everyday Cardigan
1-2 Midweight Sweaters
Chunky Knit.
Where to Shop for Fall Sweaters
Reformation offers great-quality cashmere sweaters
Tuckernuck provides an excellent variety
Ann Taylor is a classic staple
Amazon offers affordable options.
6. Tops & Blouses
When it comes to tops and blouses, focus on pieces that effortlessly complement your chosen bottoms and can seamlessly transition from casual to dressy with the right shoes, accessories, or jacket. For maximum versatility, consider sleeveless and short-sleeve tops that can be layered beneath chunky cardigans, blazers, or jackets in cooler seasons, ensuring you can wear them year-round. While neutrals are known for their adaptability, don't hesitate to include one or two statement pieces in bold prints or vibrant colors.
Here's a lineup of essential tops and blouses to include in your fall capsule wardrobe:
A stylish short-sleeve top
Luxurious silk or breezy linen tank tops
A classic white button-down shirt
Robust cotton or cozy flannel for fall/winter
The timeless denim shirt
A chic silk blouse for those special occasions.
Where to Shop for Fall Tops & Blouses
Vince - excellent quality button-ups
J. Crew - cute & cozy options
Banana Republic - day-to-night selections
Everlane - timeless pieces.
7. Tee & Tanks
No capsule wardrobe is complete without versatile neutral tees and tanks. Seek out t-shirts and tank tops that stand independently or can be layered beneath various tops, sweaters, or jackets. Short-sleeve tees are your go-to choice for year-round wear, and they prove invaluable for layering under other pieces during cooler seasons. If you own multiple t-shirts in the same color, aim to retain only the best one or two tees. Consider donating or recycling the remainder based on their condition.
Here's a lineup of essential tees and tanks to incorporate into your capsule wardrobe
A classic white tee
A versatile gray tee
A soft cream or beige tee
A colored tee to inject a pop of personality
A playful graphic tee for a touch of fun
A timeless black tee
A reliable white tank
A soothing beige or cream tank
A sleek black tank.
Where We Buy Tanks & Tees
Abercrombie - great sets,
Skims - a lot of options for the essentials
Target - affordable + nice quality
H&M - a staple for the essentials.
8. Shoes
Carefully selecting the right shoes is essential for a well-rounded fall capsule wardrobe. Here are some tips for choosing shoes for your fall capsule wardrobe:
Start with a versatile pair of block-heel booties. They effortlessly boost your autumn outfits while providing comfort for all-day wear.
Fall staple booties can seamlessly transition from day to night and pair beautifully with jeans, dresses, or skirts.
Consider including a pair of classic flats to complement these for days when you want both style and ease.
When you're on the move, sneakers are a must-have addition for casual, comfortable strolls through the autumn leaves.
These four shoe choices cover the spectrum of fall fashion, ensuring your capsule wardrobe is both stylish and functional for the season.
Adding Fall Flair
Every fall capsule wardrobe needs some must-have pieces, like cozy sweaters, stylish boots, and the perfect jeans. Your outfit should also embrace the spirit of fall with seasonal accents like scarves, hats, and autumn-inspired accessories. We recommend purchasing a gold belt (if you don’t already have one) as it is an excellent accessory for fall styles. An everyday crossbody bag is another great fall accessory that is both practical and versatile. A crossbody can be easily worn for many occasions and complement many outfits.

14 Fall 2024 Fashion Trends You Need in Your Closet Now
1. Country House Chic: Embrace Traditional Heritage Styles for Fall 2024
Fall’s most alluring trend (at least in the eyes of the Glamour style team) is a confluence of plaids, relaxed layers, and long skirts. It’s dressing like you decamp to a country house, preferably one in the English countryside, every autumn. Expect traditional markers of heritage style—waxed jackets, checked coats, full skirts, knee-high wellies—to reign supreme this fall, especially on days when rain is in the forecast.
2. Boho 3.0: A Modern Take on the Retro Aesthetic
Welcome back to the zeitgeist, shabby chic! While the word boho might send you on a stress-induced mental trip back to 2014, fear not: The aesthetic’s third coming has been remixed for 2024, with new takes on crochet, fringe, and flowy fabrics that feel fresher than ever before.
Chloé’s standout fall-winter runway provided the primary blueprint for the modern take on the look (we’re still dreaming of the wedges front-row guests were given to wear), but Louis Vuitton, Isabel Marant, and Etro are on the same wave. Sienna Miller and Rachel Zoe would approve of these relaxed, worldly pieces in retro florals, rich suede, and faded denim.
3. Denim on Denim: The Canadian Tuxedo is Back
The Canadian tuxedo has been the subject of some ridicule, but fashion insiders agree: This is the season of the whole denim look. At labels like Schiaparelli, Moschino, and Skall Studio, blue jean ensembles walked the fall runways; at the most recent New York Fashion week, meanwhile, we spotted countless showgoers (including some Glamour editors) rocking similar looks in tonal and mismatched denim. These sets, including Western-inspired shirts and trendy long skirts, are a perfect place to start as cooler weather settles in.
4. Riding Boots: Tall, Structured, and Ready to Rally
With all due respect to shorter and slouchier footwear (which, for the record, we’re still wearing), tall, structured riding boots are set to become the go-to silhouette of the months ahead. The knee-high shoes lend an equestrian grace and help anchor flowy fall dresses, newly trendy skinny jeans, and just about anything else in your autumn capsule. Dip your toes into the look (literally) with a crewneck cardi, a midi-skirt, and one of these pairs.
5. Dark Cherry Accessories: The Color of Fall 2024
Designer labels found near-universal consensus on one color this season: burgundy, especially for accessories. Bags, shoes, and everything else popped up in dark cherry, oxblood, and claret, meaning anything in the family is a sound investment right now. Go with a Coach bag straight from the runway, sleek leather gloves, or Gucci-esque boots from Reformation.
6. Studs, Studs, Studs: The Hardware Trend to Invest In Now
Hey, stud. Thanks to boho’s significant resurgence, studs are also more prominently in the spotlight than ever. Studs graced bags, belts, boots, and jackets on runways by Loewe and Chloé; now, the hardware is even more inescapable. Clare V.’s studded crescent suitcase is one of the season's most coveted pieces (close to selling out for good), while J. Crew jeans, Free People belts, and Steve Madden boots offer a way into the trend that’s a little less intense.
7. Prep School: A Nostalgic Trend with Modern Appeal
Preps are so back. This trend is directly tied to Miu Miu’s string of hyper-popular runways culminating in this fall’s collection, which featured models seemingly playing dress-up in their mothers’ ultra-preppy clothes. Full skirts, button-down shirts, leather loafers, sharp blazers, and V-neck sweaters popped up everywhere, from Tommy Hilfiger to Victoria Beckham; color palettes largely leaned academic in navy, khaki, burgundy, and gray. The formula is simple: Throw a jacket over a collared shirt and pair it with relaxed bottoms in jeans or a skirt. (Your school uniform wishes it could have been that cool.)
8. Chunky Loafers: The Statement Shoe of Fall 2024
After a few seasons in the fashion doghouse, brands like Gucci and Victoria Beckham are going big on stacked loafers for fall. And those chunky soles, exaggerated hardware, tassels, and prints are also back in vogue—so don’t be afraid to go wild. We suggest going a little more low-key with the rest of your outfit (say, a trench coat and straight-leg jeans) to let the shoes do all the talking.
9. Leopard Print: A Bold Return to Animalia
Mob-wife winter has evolved; welcome to leopard-print fall. So many of our favorite designers, including boho darling Isabel Marant and prim and proper Dior, showed the divisive print for fall. Our editors have also noticed many style insiders rocking the print during September’s fashion month, meaning the trend has legs. Go for a complete animal-print look with a matching dress and jacket—or add subtler pops like Damson Madder’s super-popular leopard jeans or Steve Madden’s foldover sneakers.
10. Butter Yellow: The Perfect Shade for Any Fall Color Palette
We called it back in February: Butter yellow is the color of the year. The unexpected neutral is the perfect shade, considering you can pair it with anything—black, white, navy, denim blue, pink—and should please both color lovers and monochromatic dressers. While plenty of designers showed whole tonal looks (we’re particularly into Gucci’s buttery suit and JW Anderson’s sculptural sweater dress), you don’t need to go all in to experiment with the color. Sprinkle a creamy sweater or bag into your transitional wardrobe.
11. T-Bar Shoes: A New Take on Mary Janes
Mary Janes have been famous all year, but we noticed that they’re evolving for fall; T-bar shoes, which feature an extra strap connecting the toe to the cross strap, are poised to take over as one of fall’s biggest shoe trends after featuring heavily at Miu Miu, Ferragamo, and Dries Van Noten. (Everyone from Katie Holmes to Justin Bieber is on board, by the way.) The retro, academic style fits nicely with the ongoing preppy revival we mentioned above, and it looks great solo or alongside colored tights. Stay on trend by updating your loafers, ballet flats, and event heels with T-bar detailing.
12. Fur for All: Faux Fur for Every Outfit
Everyone—Prada, Burberry, Erdem, Eckhaus Latta, Proenza Schouler, Balmain, Loewe, you name it—showed some form of faux fur this season. Our advice? Invest in the best new pieces now before they disappear. Maje and Mango offer a cropped fall jacket silhouette that’s incredibly trendy right now; take the material in a different direction with a designer bag or a pair of shoes. (Furry footwear popped up at Versace, Acne Studios, and Ferragamo, by the way.)
13. Neckties: The Preppy Accessory for Fall 2024
Few accessories have dominated fashion month as much as neckties. Once a symbol of structure and conformity, ties now signal a playful subversiveness that feels now. While we still suggest wearing them with button-down shirts, you don’t need to wear them with complete menswear looks à la Schiaparelli; dress them down with wide-leg jeans and heels or full skirts and ballet flats. (Don’t be bashful—we also had to look up how to tie a tie.) Start with classic black and then buy into other designs that speak to you.
14. Glove Flats: The Simplest Shoe for Fall 2024
While busier ballet flats are still in the mix, designers and style influencers have been influenced by the glove flat, perhaps the most uncomplicated silhouette of all. Free from straps, bows, and other embellishments, these shoes aren’t meant to shock—but they can still define an outfit. Take a swing on simple mesh flats like Bottega Veneta before it gets too chilly, add contrasting footwear for a pop of color à la Marni, or go for a completely tonal ensemble like Bevza. You’ll look effortlessly chic in every scenario.

20 Fall Outfit Ideas to Steal From Street Style
1. The All-Over Knit Fall Outfit
Knitwear is a fall favorite for good reason. It's comfortable and cozy, with endless ways to style it. Transitional dressing at its finest. Go sleeveless with a knitted vest and skinny scarf to implement these warmer pieces into your wardrobe as the seasons change. Swap out accessories and grab an underlayer when needed.
2. The Monochrome Fall Outfit
Fade to gray with an utterly monochrome look that oozes sophistication. Keep it all in the knit family with a relaxed cardigan, long, pleated skirt, and underpinnings, all with the same textural feel.
3. The “Shirting Hero” Fall Outfit
Keep things classic with crisp, cotton shirting that can go the distance. We love a playful mashup of stripes on blue as a fresh alternative to your classic whites. With fluid trousers, this one is the easiest to pull off.
4. The Khaki Trench Fall Outfit
Every closet needs an excellent khaki trench coat. Sophia Roe proves that a voluminous single-button style looks oh-so-chic, even over the most straightforward T-shirt and trousers, while saving you from autumnal showers.
5. The Capri Pants Fall Outfit
Capris are here to stay; this outfit shows how to take them into fall. Add a blazer or cardigan over a silky top, a luxurious ballet flat, and voilà! Summer’s big hit turns into an autumnal staple.
6. The Head-to-Toe Red Fall Outfit
From Bella Hadid to Emily Ratajkowski, It girls can’t get enough of the vibrant shade, and neither can we. We recommend a textured knit and structured miniskirt for fall to get things going. Add tights and a closed-toe shoe when those first chills hit.
7. The Barn Jacket Fall Outfit
Here’s a fresh way to style that denim barn jacket you have seen everywhere. The jacket staple goes from country weekend to city-street-ready when worn atop white underpinnings, such as a crisp button-up (bonus points for an elongated collar!) and trouser pants.
8. The Espresso-Inspired Fall Outfit
It’s no secret that all shades of brown are trending, but during fall, the hue shines. A head-to-toe look inspired by the changing leaves—a shirt and trousers or a suit set, as below—is the easiest way to incorporate the color into your everyday.
9. The Nautically Inspired Fall Outfit
Preppy stripes get the modern-day treatment when paired with an ankle-length denim skirt, cool shades, and an enviable flat shoe. When inclement weather strikes, simply style with a boot instead.
10. The Ultra-Long Coat Fall Outfit
The potential of outerwear mixed with the ease of a maxi dress exists, and it can be found in the maxi coat. Almost floor-sweeping, it can be worn as the centerpiece of any fall outfit.
11. The Cinched-Waist Classic Fall Outfit
A white button-up is just a button-up until it’s accessorized. What better way to do that than with a waist-hugging belt? Boost the ensemble with playful details like a neck scarf, tinted sunglasses, or strappy heels.
12. The “Classic With a Twist” Fall Outfit
A blazer is a staple in every wardrobe come fall and winter, but one styled like this adds a new, unique element. Underneath, layer with a longer sleeve. Then, add the season’s favorite flat shoe in a coordinating color.
13. The Double-Denim Fall Outfit
For everyone from editors to street stylers, influencers, and superstars, the classic “Canadian tuxedo” is a preferred fashion uniform. The double-denim styles of now have taken a modern twist, with oversized silhouettes and baggy low-rises.
14. The Transitional Fall Outfit
Rain or shine, sudden heat or random temperature drop, and fall weather tend to be all over the place until mid-October. What is the ideal way to battle this situation? Easy layers. A cream blazer over a lightweight, silky tunic will keep you dry and sweat-free.
15. The Leather Trench Fall Outfit
An easy way to update the classic trench coat is by purchasing (or thrifting) one cast in leather. Modern styles boast longline, oversized silhouettes that double as a rain-resistant statement maker.
16. The Comfy-Yet-Chic Fall Outfit
The ideal fall outfit is comfortable and chic, like Tina Kunakey’s. Start with an unexpected, deconstructed poplin top, layer with a seamless turtleneck, and pair with statement designer jeans. It’s fail-proof.
17. The Streetwear-Inspired Fall Outfit
Edgy, sleek, and sophisticated all in one. This ensemble inspired by street style is always a present for the fashion crowd. Maybe it’s Bella Hadid, and maybe it’s Sophia Geiss—either way, a long leather coat with baggy white shorts is exceptionally cool.
18. The Sans-Pants Fall Outfit
No pants, no problem—especially for those in tune with the current trends. The oversized shacket makes for a great transitional piece through those warmer fall days with just a boot and then can be layered when temperatures start to dip.
19. The Matching Set Fall Outfit
Although temperatures may dip, there’s still plenty of opportunity come September and early October to bare your legs with a micro-mini length. Stay just warm enough with an updated bomber jacket.
20. The Off-Duty Fall Outfit
Another foolproof outfit nodding to the ’90s was popularized by busy off-duty models running from casting to backstage. Now, it’s one of our go-to looks for summer and fall. Choose a longer-sleeved T-shirt.
30 Best Men’s Fall Style Trends of 2024
1. The Unbeatable Flannel Shirt
When temperatures drop, a flannel shirt is a no-brainer. Most versions will be plaid, but all of them should feel substantial enough to double as a light jacket, thanks to their lightweight wool or thick cotton make.
2. The Fluffy Fleece Jacket
Fleece jackets were once the exclusive remit of dads and crunchy climber types with tips on sleeping in a Subaru's trunk. Those folks have our gratitude—bundling up in a fuzzy, furry pullover is one of the kindest things you can do for yourself in the depths of a surprisingly brisk fall. A fleece is impenetrably warm (much more cost-effective than shearling), impossibly comfy, and adds as much texture to a single fit as all the cords combined in your closet.
3. The Slip-Ons You Won't Slip Off
Only a few years ago, mules were the sole domain of line cooks and healthcare workers, who appreciated their no-frills design and easy-wearing attitude. No longer. For proof of the silhouette's righteous fashion glow-up, just look to Jonathan Anderson, the red-hot designer behind the must-cop mules of the season. Are you looking for a pair that is guaranteed to upgrade your bed-to-bodega shuffle? The Japanese footwear savants at Suicoke line theirs with ultra-plush sheepskin shearling.
4. The Gam-Swaddling Pants
When the weather is all doom and gloom, corduroy pants boost fashion serotonin like a mug of soothing hot chocolate. The rest of that sweet-toothed analogy holds, too: cords are an absolute heavenly treat for your lower half. Plusher than your jeans, miles more comfortable than your wool trousers, and a worthy substitute for either.
5. The Grown-Up Tote Bag
A good tote bag needs to do only one thing: hold stuff. A great tote bag, though, needs to check off a few more boxes. It should still carry your clothes, kicks, chargers, toiletries, and everything else in the most space-efficient, easy-to-find way possible. But it should also be designed to outlast your passport—or better yet, you—despite years of being stuffed in an overhead bin and thrown in the trunk of your car. All of which is to say: that flimsy canvas version you got for free ain't going to cut it anymore.
6. The All-Occasion Boots
By now, you probably think the game's name here is versatility. While you don't have to opt for Chelsea boots, the right pair will be able to withstand the elements—and any sideways glances from your office nemesis. Call it a funny case of fashion kismet or chalk it up to Australia's topsy-turvy climate turbulence, but two of our all-time favorite versions hail from down under. Buy them both, and you'll always be set, whether you swear by paint-splattered work pants or knife-sharp dress trousers.
7. The Badass Denim Shirt
Denim shirts have come a long way from their humble origins. These days, there's a broader array of them than ever before, from authentic sawtooth western joints crafted from Japanese selvedge to cozy flannel-lined jacket hybrids. Try one with a blazer and weathered khakis or as one-half of a Canadian tuxedo, and don't be surprised—or remotely disappointed—if you find yourself reaching for it day after day. You're in good company.
8. The Endlessly Layerable Undershirt
On the most dastardly days of late fall, you'll need some backup when you wake up achy and frigid and physically unable to roll out from under your duvet. You're probably familiar with the thermal shirts you wore hiking and skiing as a kid, but those old-school long-sleeved tees are just as practical and relevant as ever. Tuck one into your jeans, throw a heavy flannel and a puffer over the top, and you've got an unimpeachable cold-weather ensemble.
9. The Suit That Looks Better as Separates
If you're worried about your buddies flaming you for going full "Wes Anderson mode" in the group chat, relax; there's much more to fall tailoring than corduroy. (Though if you're going for Anderson cosplay, Drake sells a version so luxe that it'd make even the tweet auteur blush.) Put simply, the fall suit's most significant selling point is its ability to hold its split up. Unlike your usual business casual fare, it works even better when you wear the jacket with a knit polo and jeans or the pants with a plush sweater.
10. The Hard-Working Pants
Heavy-duty pants have been conquering harsh conditions for over a century and are still strong as the trousers du jour of fellas whose gigs require them to get down and dirty daily. But even if your tool belt is more of a laptop bag, a pair of reinforced, beefed-up trousers are a reliable option that'll add some authentic workwear flavor to your get-ups.
11. The Treat for Your Feet
We'll tell you that socks aren't exactly the most exciting category to shop for. But when those balmy late-summer nights give way to shockingly brisk fall mornings, you'll curse yourself for not prepping accordingly. So, folks, resolve to do better—and start by stocking up on the type of hardy, handsome hosiery immediately below. Dropping more than ten bucks on a pair you'll wear forever only feels like a splurge until your feet thank you for the 100th time—a decade down the line.
12. The A-List-Approved Suede Jacket
Do you want to know what Michael B. Jordan, Tom Holland, and Ryan Reynolds have in common? (Aside from the wildly successful careers…and the sculpted-by-god bodies…and all that money.) It's a great suede jacket. Why? Because they're luxe and lush and simply scream movie star.
Pro tip
Grab one in a classic style that’s cropped right at the waist. It’ll lengthen your legs, accentuate the butt, and sync up oh-so-well with some of-the-moment high-waisted pants or a pair of classic Levi’s 501s.
13. The Bad Hair Day Panacea
A great beanie is the gloriously cozy accessory that keeps your head warm (depending on how you choose to wear it) and your fits topped off. Most of us have a stack of them, accumulated over time. Some were splurges—soft cashmere for a buzzcut head, maybe, or a freaked-out version to offset the midwinter blahs—and some were $12 gas station grails, with plenty in between. The two below will never steer you wrong.
14. The Grandma-Coded Cardigan
There are plenty of swerve knitwear moves to make as the leaves change, but the best one this season is the most simple. Like your grandmother's demure assurances, the crewneck cardigan will support your fit as no other sweater can. You don't have to add pearls, but we wouldn't be mad if you did.
15. The Brawny Work Jacket
In recent years, work jackets have been party to one of the most significant crossover events in men's style history, from OSHA-approved job sites to the everyday wardrobes of fellas whose only calluses come from holding an iPhone too long. They're sturdy, built to get up with the rooster’s crow, and put in a brutal 12 hours without missing a beat. In all likelihood, that’s not something you need—but who doesn’t want to pull on a bit of ready-for-anything armor as they set out the door?
16. The Tie You Wear Because You Want To
In 2024, you don't need an occasion to rock a tie. Loosen the neck a little; let that knot hang low. Try pairing a trippy foulard with an Oxford-cloth shirt, crisply-pressed slacks, and a fuzzy shetland sweater. Or a schoolboy-ish repp with a point collar dress shirt and a nubby vintage blazer. Don't be afraid to mix patterns, either: Who says brash polka dots can't play nice with subtle plaids? Getting a little freaky is the point!
17. The Cool-Guy Button-Up
Like a plain white tee or trusty dark jeans, the striped shirt is a sartorial skeleton key to unlock any outfit. The best of the genre will help all the pieces in your closet fall into place—and stand by your side as you puzzle through countless stylistic head-scratchers down the line. When you're running late and only have five minutes to get dressed, you can throw one on without maxing out your pre-coffee brain and rest easy knowing you'll look more than half-decent.
18. The Hot-Professor Sweater Vest
Argyle used to be the preserve of misty-eyed academics or the type of pencil-pushers who pronounce the ‘h’ in white. The pattern still adorns plenty of sweaters these days, but its attitude is more punk than preppy (think shaggy mohair polos or oversized crewnecks in the perfect shade of scuzzy greige). We dig an argyle cardigan as much as the next guy, but to channel the pattern's geeky-cool heritage, reach for the silhouette you would've encountered on the quads of yesteryear: the professorial sweater vest.
19. The Built-Tough Field Watch
There’s a good reason why field watches have long since transcended their military pedigree. They're designed to stand up to battle, which generally speaks well regarding quality and functionality in non-combat situations. For another, military gear tends to have a particular kind of rugged, honest appeal that looks fresh with everything you pair with faded jeans, crisp white tees, and an apocalypse-ready canvas trucker.
20. The Cinematic Trench Coat
Decades before the kids on TikTok were showering in their Arc’teryx, trench coats were the first wardrobe defense against hellish weather. When they were issued to British soldiers during World War I, trench coats were long, double-breasted, and cut from gabardine, a durable cotton cloth you might call the Gore-Tex of its era. But in the time since, trench coats became prized for their civilian benefits too: roomy enough to drape easily over a razor-sharp suit, elegant sufficient to class up a hoodie and jeans, and warm enough to wear during anything shy of a full-blown blizzard.
21. The All-Feet-On-Deck Shoes
The deck shoe's appeal is pretty obvious: it boasts no splashy logos, no tech-age fabrics, and no extra paneling or ergonomic curves beyond what’s entirely necessary to keep your foot in place and help prevent untimely slips, whether you’re hopping aboard a schooner or hustling to a brunch reservation after a light fall shower. There's a reason mood board legends like Paul Newman swore by them—but unlike Newman's sought-after Rolexes, there’s nothing “grail-worthy” about them, in the best way possible.
22. The Ultra-Cozy Zip-Up
Think of the zip-up hoodie as the pullover's edgy younger brother. In its most natural state, it can cuddle up to a matching set of pants and a baggy tee with flair. Unzipped and left open, it can take on the role of a picture frame ready to display your sickest graphic tee—much like the cardigan, another treasure of 2000s fashion. Or make like a mid-aughts garage band and wear yours over a dress shirt and baggy tailored trousers, a high-minded fashion move with a jolt of Scandinavian cool.
23. The Everyday Crewneck Sweatshirt
The humble gray crewneck helped Steve McQueen evade capture in The Great Escape, cemented John Travolta’s heartthrob status in Grease, and made Eddie Murphy a badass in Beverly Hills Cop. Paul Newman, the patron saint of laid-back menswear, wore one religiously. In 2024, the crewneck sweatshirt comes in a rainbow of different colors and silhouettes, but every dependable gray is still the shade to beat for our money.
24. The Raw-and-Rugged Jeans
Unlike the raw denim that dominated the menswear conversation a decade ago, the jeans we’re talking about here can do more than stand up. The silhouettes are looser and flowier, the branding is more overt, and the hems should be worn uncuffed; the jeans, not the red-trimmed evidence of their Japanese provenance, are the flex. They’ll still whisker with the best of them, but they’re meant to be worn however you want, with more than just waxed jackets and work boots.
25. The Loafers ('Nuff Said, Really)
At GQ, we’ve long maintained that loafers are the Swiss Army Knife of shoes, ready to help you puzzle through any stylistic head-scratchers you encounter. Are you unsure what shoes to wear with a bespoke tux for a red-carpet event or a fancy wedding? Now you are. Not sure what shoes to wear with fraying jeans to the after-after party that same night? (The only two vibes, really.) Now you are, too.
26. The Movie-Star Shades
Come fall; sunglasses are more than just protective—they're major fit enhancers in their own right, the type of last-minute additions to the roster that get fashion referees buzzing about fair play. The right pair of frames can steal the show even next to the most paparazzi-attracting coat or outrageous haircut. Think of them as adding ‘90s-era Jordan to a lineup that already includes 2000s-era Kobe and 2010s-era Lebron.
27. The Beefy Leather Belt
A leather belt with this much heft is guaranteed to look swell with just about everything in your wardrobe, but if you want it to pop, slip it into a pair of dusty-hued corduroys or nubby raw jeans and watch it go from nice-to-have accessory to fit-making finishing touch.
28. The Shit-Kicking Derbys
Over the last couple of years, the derby has reclaimed its rightful place in the hearts and closets of stylish dudes across the globe. At a moment when the sneaker’s supremacy is in flux, the silhouette has stepped in—and stepped up its presence, courtesy of the type of pleasantly hefty soles that make loafers tremble. A lot has changed since the derby first rose to prominence, but one thing hasn’t: it's still one of the most versatile shoes on the planet.
29. Denim on Denim
Once regarded as a fashion faux pas, the Texas tuxedo has never been more relaxed than it is now. Prada, Valentino, Ami, and Officine Générale, among many other labels, all showed denim-on-denim looks for fall—and it’s already made the leap into the real world on some of Fashion Month’s most stylish attendees. While we’re all for mixing washes, the key to nailing 2024’s take on this trend is matching tops to bottoms as closely as possible; these matching pairs are a great place to start (and fit the overarching Americana vibe of the season, too).
30. Ivy League
Preps, rejoice: We are so back. Inspired by the intelligent, haphazard layering and pattern-mixing popularized on Ivy League campuses, some of fall’s best menswear shows gave us new ways of combining preppy pieces. Why not embrace the fall trend and throw a jacket over a sweater or a tee over a rugby shirt? And even if you don’t want to layer like a Tommy Hilfiger model, these Ivy-friendly staples look sharp.
