Why Navy Blue Is a Fabulous Color to Wear
Navy blue is a specific, very dark nuance of blue that is often associated with elegance and classic looks. It’s called “navy” because it’s the color of the deepest part of the ocean, and this similarity with black makes it versatile and combinable with many other colors. This color is also perfect for formal and casual occasions, from an exquisite dress to a classic suit or a jumper with denim. Navy Blue adapts to every event, no matter the occasion.
Here are just some of the things we love about the Navy:
Navy is a universal color.
Unlike black, which can be harsh, it flatters the vast majority of skin tones.
It looks stylish year-round.
While it’s not always in stores in significant quantities throughout the year, navy looks fabulous anytime, whether you opt for a navy party dress at Christmas or a striped navy tee during summer.
It can be formal or casual.
You could wear navy as a mother-of-the-bride in lovely lace or choose a chunky navy sweater. It’s one of the most versatile colors out there!
Navy goes with every other color in your closet.
If you have one of those I-have-nothing-to-wear moments, adding more neutrals to your closet can help you get the most out of the clothes you already have. Because it’s a classic shade, you can afford to consider navy clothes and accessories as an investment that you will keep for years.
Navy Blue and The Basics of Color Theory
Color theory explains how colors mix, match, and complement each other. The color wheel, a visual representation of color relationships, forms the basis of color theory. Like aqua and royal blue, Navy blue sits in the blue family. Blue hues have cool undertones and pair well with warm and cool tones. Navy blue looks great with almost every color on the wheel, especially those within its family.
Color theory has key concepts that can help you understand how to combine colors for your wardrobe. These include complementary, analogous, and triadic color schemes.
Navy Blue's Perfect Match: Complementary Colors
In the world of color, opposites attract. Complementary colors sit directly across from each other on the color wheel. Navy blue's complementary color is a warm shade of orange. Imagine a navy blue dress paired with orange accessories—a look sure to turn heads. The contrast between these two hues creates a combination visually:
Striking
Captivating
Energetic
Navy Blue Goes with Everything: Analogous and Harmonious Palettes
If you aim for a harmonious blend, look no further than analogous colors. These are colors that sit adjacent to navy blue on the color wheel. Teaming navy blue with shades of royal blue and deep purple creates a calming and elegant analogous palette. Such combinations are often found in upscale interior designs and refined fashion ensembles.
Vibrant Color Combos: Triadic Color Schemes
The triadic color scheme is the answer for those who crave vibrancy and creativity. Triadic combinations involve selecting three colors evenly spaced around the color wheel. Graphic designers and artists often use triadic color schemes to infuse energy into their work.
Navy blue is paired with its triadic partners, such as golden yellow and fiery red, resulting in a lively, attention-grabbing palette.

28. Navy and Black, Black, and More Black
Yes, we’re first addressing the most controversial color to wear with navy blue: black. Why is there so much controversy between these two colors, anyway? We hear specific fashion rules in our youth, and they stick (and dictate the rest of our lives, or at least until some mid-life crisis occurs).
“You can’t wear navy blue with black.” I don’t remember who said those words to me as a teenager, but a voice in my head didn’t let me forget them whenever I considered wearing or purchasing navy blue clothes. Later in life, I realized there was no truth to that statement.
Versatile Navy Blue and Black Combinations for Every Occasion
We only have to go outside and see the proof that navy blue and black make the perfect combination.
Here’s some of the combination:
Navy Blue With Black Outfit Ideas
Navy cashmere jumper belted with a black midi skirt and black boots
Fitted black top with cropped navy blue trousers and a navy blue heel
Navy blue blazer and jeans with a black fitted turtleneck
Black shirt and pants with a navy blazer or navy blue wool coat
Navy blue dress with all-black accessories such as tights and over-the-knee boots
Navy blue linen trousers, navy blue linen shirt, black fitted tank layered underneath, black strappy sandals
In nature, a silhouette of trees against a midnight sky showcases the mystery and beauty of these colors. A cityscape against a dark sky is equally as beautiful. A killer whale jumping out of a deep blue sea is also breathtaking in feat and in the beauty of these simple colors.

The Best Navy Blue Color For Your Season
Seasonal color analysis helps you determine which navy blue shades look best on you. Not everyone can wear navy and still shine. Plus, your best navy blue color is different from my best navy. What it truly comes down to is, which navy suits you? The answer to that question is determined by your season. If you aren’t sure of your season, you might consider a personal color analysis.
Navy Blue by Seasonal Color Palette
It’s hard to create images that adequately show the navy blue variances that look best in each season, but believe me, they exist! Winter and summer have the most versions of the navy because they are excellent colors, and these are the cooler seasons.
You might see that winter has the darkest navy blue colors
Summers have the softest
Spring is the brightest
Autumn is the warmest
Honestly, most autumns and super warm springs don’t look their best in navy, but these are their best versions of the navy blue color.
Winter
We’ll start with winter because navy is often seen as a quintessential color. All winters have a navy blue color in their palette. They all have at least three versions! Since it is a darker season, all winters look good in dark navy blue. Beyond that, though, they vary a bit in terms of which navy is each sub-seasons best navy. Deep winters or dark winters have the most navy blue colors. This is probably because they have “shaded” versus “intense” coloring and many shaded versions of the navy.
Winters that are shaded look great in colors shaded with black, so deep winters have the most blackened navy colors.
True winters have the most intense coloring, which looks best in pure colors. Therefore, their navy blues are the most accurate navy colors.
Cool winters lean-to summer, so they have the softest navy colors of the winter.
Clear winters lean to spring, so they have the brightest navy colors.
The best navy blue colors by winter sub-season are:
Deep/Dark Winter:
Dark navy blue
Deep navy
Midnight blue
Navy blue
True navy
Cool Winter:
Dark navy blue
True navy
Cool navy
True Winter:
Dark navy blue
True navy
Dark navy
Clear/Bright Winter:
Dark navy blue
Warm navy
Bright navy
Spring
Since Spring is a generally warm season, fewer navy blue colors are harmonious with spring color palettes. The neutral spring seasons, light spring and clear spring, have two bright navy colors.
However, when I complete custom color palettes for true and warm springs, I often find that many look lovely in a navy with a bit of green. Dark marine blue is usually an excellent version of navy on them, as well as warm navy. For obvious reasons:
Light springs have light and bright navy colors as deeper colors overwhelm them.
True spring and warm spring generally don’t receive navy in their color palette because they have warm skin tones, and navy is cool.
The best navy blue colors by spring sub-season:
Light Spring:
New navy
Light clear navy
Clear/Bright Spring:
Warm navy
Bright navy
True/Warm Spring:
Warm navy
Bright navy
Summer
Summers look lovely in the navy, but they look their most harmonious when they’re a softened or brushed version of the navy.
Summers truly look best in a muted navy.
Light summers are the exception, as they shine in the same light-clear navy that looks best on light springs.
Cool winters aren’t an exception in that they also look great in a muted navy, but they additionally look beautiful in a softened deep navy. Due to the depth of their coloring, they receive the most versions of navy in their palette.
Soft summers have more grey in their navy than any other summer.
The best navy blue colors by summer sub-season:
Light summer:
light clear navy
Cool summer:
Cool navy
Soft navy
Muted navy
Grey navy
True summer:
Soft indigo
Muted navy
Gray navy
Soft summer:
Dark marine blue
Dark slate blue
Deep blue gray
Autumn
I rarely give autumn a navy blue color in their custom color palette. I tend only to do this when they have blue eyes because otherwise, it doesn’t work with their warm coloring. Traditional color palettes usually include a few versions of navy for deep and soft autumns, as these two sub-seasons are neutral and lean to either winter or summer.
Deep or dark autumns receive the same midnight blue and deep navy as deep winters.
Soft autumns receive the same dark marine blue and slate blue as soft summers.
The navy versions that deep and soft autumns receive have quite a bit of green or brown, making them potentially work for true and warm autumns, who don’t traditionally receive navy in their color palette.
The best navy blue colors by autumn sub-season are:
Deep/dark autumn:
Midnight blue
Deep navy
Navy
Soft autumn:
Dark marine blue
Dark slate blue
Marine navy
True/warm autumn:
Dark marine blue
Marine navy (as possibilities, but many are not harmonious with navy)
Making Navy Work For You
I love the navy, but it doesn’t always love me. As a light summer, I only look best in my light, bright navy. Given my lightness, however, I don’t have very many dark neutrals that work for me, so navy is my “go-to” dark neutral. If navy isn’t the best color for you, but you still want to wear it, try wearing it on your bottom half paired with one of the best colors in your top or as the base of a significant print.
Warm springs look excellent with:
Citron
Chartreuse
Violet
Peach
Warm autumns might try:
Mustard
Pumpkin
Light moss
If you’re wondering, “What colors go with navy blue?” No worries; navy is neutral and looks great in many colors. I especially love it with versions of:
Green
Yellow
Tan
12 Navy Blue Outfits to Show the Shade Is More Versatile Than You Think
1. Navy Blue Blazer and White Button-Down Shirt
A classic navy blazer always stays in style, and for good reason. One of the traditional combinations is pairing this structured outerwear with a crisp, classic white button-down shirt. To look casual, try swapping the black trousers for a denim midi skirt.
2. Navy Blue Blouse and Beige Trousers
Two neutrals, like navy blue and beige, become show-stopping when worn together. Plus, you can amp up your look with vibrant footwear or accessories. To try out this color palette, wear a beige tank top with navy track pants or style a navy sweater with khaki pants and a handful of layered necklaces.
3. Navy Blue Outerwear and Black Dress Pants
Stepping out in a navy blue and black outfit was once considered a faux pas, but that's no longer true. Instead, these colors create a striking and somewhat unexpected combination. Just look at this long navy coat and black dress pants.
Are you looking for another option? Pair an oversized navy top with black bike shorts for a lampshading moment.
4. Navy Blue Jacket and Gray Athleisure
Why not break up your gray sweatshirt with a navy jacket or wear a navy vest with gray trousers? A navy blue and gray duo always looks sharp, whether you're going casual or dressing up for the office. We recommend sticking with a lighter shade of gray to provide some contrast.
5. Navy Blue and Green Striped Shirt
We're all about pattern-on-pattern outfits, and this striped-and-polka-dot look is just that. Regarding the color palette, deep navy, and bright green balance each other out. You can even try it as a green suit styled with a navy top or vice-versa.
6. Navy Blue Dress and Brown Leather Jacket
A navy blue outfit need not be complicated. Head to your closet and pick out your favorite navy dress (a denim maxi). Then, combine it with brown leather accessories. Should you be stumped in footwear, brown boots are a winner when completing a navy outfit.
7. Navy Blue Blazer and Red Shirt
While somewhat nautical or patriotic, a little red magically makes blues seem brighter. We love this rendition, which features a classic navy blazer, a red top, and a bandana for good measure. But a red jacket over a navy top or a red dress with a navy hat is also worth trying.
8. Navy Blue Mini Dress and Yellow Button-Down
Yellow tends to pop when styled with almost any color. However, it will stand out against a darker shade. This navy blue denim dress, accessorized with yellow sunglasses and heels, is exciting and eye-catching. For a low-key look, try a navy sweatshirt with yellow cargo pants.
9. Navy Blue Dress and Pink Coat
A pink jacket or coat over a navy dress—or a navy jacket over a pink dress—is a timeless and modern combination. Choose any shade of pink that will shine against this dark, neutral navy. Keep accessories neutral so they don't distract from the color blocking.
10. Navy Blue Jacket and Orange Turtleneck
Orange is the opposite of blue on the color wheel. When styled together, they make quite the impact. Try styling an orange turtleneck under a navy jacket (or even a sleeveless dress) for outfit inspiration. Try styling navy shorts with a bright orange corset top when things heat up.
11. Navy Blue Separates and Baby Blue Top
Incorporate items in a lighter shade of blue to add interest to your navy blue outfit. The color-blocked outfit will feel fashion-forward and versatile for any event. At the same time, it will come across as:
Easy
Effortless
Cool
Calming
12. Navy Blue Sweatsuit
When all else fails, monochromatic outfits are easy to wear. The colors don't have to match—anything in the same color family will still look sleek and intentional. For example, a navy set with sneakers with navy details or a navy shirt with a chunky navy cardigan is foolproof.
How To Wear Navy Blue & Black Together Like A Parisian
Most people would say navy blue and black clash. However, if you ask a Parisian, they would say otherwise. Parisians live in neutral tones like black, gray, brown, and navy blue. So, if you see someone wearing navy blue and black, you’d probably think they look chic and effortless, right? That’s because they do! I’m not sure why this is such a fashion faux pas for most, as when paired right, the color combination of navy blue and black looks incredibly chic and elegant.
Navy Blue and Black: A Timeless Fashion Duo
After all, they are the definition of stylish and elegant. Here are several very influential Parisians, Inès de La Fressange and Caroline de Maigret, each wearing their take on navy blue and black. You can see several images of these ladies all over Pinterest wearing navy blue and black together. One of my all-time favorite style icons is Emanuelle Alt, a master at wearing the color combination together. Alt does it so effortlessly and makes it look so classic and elevated. Like black, navy blue conveys power, intelligence, and confidence.
I don’t know about you, but I love wearing colors that make me feel this way. This isn’t a color combination worn in the States, and I haven’t figured out why. I assume it’s just because, for so long, there’s been a “quiet” rule that you can’t wear these two colors in the same outfit. European designers have been using this color combination for years.
How to Pair Navy Blue and Black Together
The colors aren’t too off from each other, so however you wear them together, make sure one stands out. How often have you looked in your closet and wondered if that top was navy blue or black? I have three simple rules I like to follow when thinking about wearing navy blue and black together.
The main thing is not to overthink it; follow these three simple rules, and this just might become a color combination you go to all the time. It’s been a combination. I have worn many of them this fall and will continue into winter.
Keep It Simple
If you aren’t used to wearing this color combination together, start simple. For example, you could wear a navy blue dress with black pumps or a black sweater with a navy blue scarf. One of my favorite combinations is a navy coat with black jeans, like my favorite Sézane Johnson or Sézane James coat. A popular way to wear the two colors among French people is with the classic navy Breton top and black jeans.
Add A Contrasting Color
Add a pop of color with navy and black in your accessories, like brown boots. The contrast helps the outfit look sharp and thoughtful. You could also incorporate white to look sharp with a basic navy blazer, white tee, and black jeans. This fall is all about color, so you could wear something unexpected like a navy silk top with green trousers.
Make The Color Stand Out
Whichever way you choose to wear the two colors, make sure they stand out from each other. If not, then you’ll end up with a black-on-black outfit. I mostly prefer to wear black on the bottom and Navy on the top when combining the two. Although, it is just as acceptable to wear a pair of navy pants and a black top or sweater.
Can Guys Wear Navy Blue and Black Together?
Absolutely. You can wear navy blue with black. While some people say they should never go together, this color duo is the perfect combo to amp up your wardrobe. This is especially true since so many guys in the office can’t seem to stray from wearing these two colors together.
For good reason: black and navy are the predominant colors in a man’s wardrobe. Both colors are flattering and pair well with almost anything, so they’re great for versatile styling.
Choose Your Shades Wisely
Mixing the right shades is critical when wearing navy blue with black. Some of the best black and blue pieces come in varying shades. Choose a washed-out black sweatshirt, like the one below from Abercrombie & Fitch, when pairing with dark indigo jeans or chinos. Black and navy should never be too close in tone, or else it can risk looking like an accident.
Texture Is Key
When wearing navy and black clothing, texture makes all the difference. Rich textures make dark-colored clothes come to life, so experiment by mixing linens, corduroy, seersucker, and cotton. A great example is pairing a textured-twill black jean, like the iconic one.
Wrangler pair featured below, with a navy linen button-down, or mix a solid navy seersucker pant with a black Pima cotton T-shirt. The textural mix makes even the most affordable clothes look expensive.
Let One Item be the Focus of Your Navy and Black Look
Find the anchor of your outfit and build the rest around it. For example, if you’re wearing a navy sports jacket, let the other pieces ground the look by choosing pieces in a sharp and straightforward shade of black. It’s a simple formula that makes it easy for any guy to get the right look.

Green
Yellow
Tan
